Patents are decreasing in a state that started pushing businesses out with an insane tax rate? Really? Somebody better tell Ric Romero...

FTFA: "Boston, New York and San Francisco. Those cities saw double-digit percentage growth in patent output"

Yeah, those places are pretty famous for having low taxes.

Caterpillar may be filing patent apps in Illinois, but more and more of the machines are being built out of state or overseas. Using patents as an index of business growth is kind of silly.

Insert 'Correlation not causation' rhetoric along with subtle passive aggressive reminder that I am and will continue to be a smarmy smart ass with my comments.

I dunno - made as much sense as everything else in this train wreck.

Chicago's got it all- the terrible climate of the Upper Midwest, the high taxes of California, the ubiquitous toll roads of Texas, the rude pushiness of NYC, and the corruption of Louisiana.

If the feds would only stop jailing the innovative thinkers in Illinois for a few election cycles, the creativity might start trickling down again.

I honestly thought you were suggesting that D-Ro patent his crossover dribble drive.

Just so we are clear - IL usually has been in the top 10 of states (or top 20% for the math challenged), getting to 7th in 2006 and staying there until 2010, which is when the latest data is for. However, this means that IL is slipping... from 7th all the way down to 7th. Or is it slipping because the growth rate is only 9%, which is a mere single digit number. Everything would be ok if it was a double digit number.

Man, the tea baggers are really pushing this anti-Chicago angle. It makes me sad that a bunch of stupid backwards sociopaths who never would have set foot here anyway are implying that they'll never set foot here.

And I'm pretty sure Texas is corruption central, if we're talking about people who fark the entire country...
