Ishkur: The scene that really stuck out for me is during Sarah's "honeymoon" montage where she's enormously popular and shaking hands with parents of downs children. And there's that one 40-something woman, mother of five, crying into the camera saying that here, for the first time, was someone who actually understood her and her type of people, running for office! The disenfranchised simple homemakers of America. No one ever panders to them because no one has ever needed to (because they usually don't vote or if they do they vote for their husband's party). Their voices are never heard.

That's the part that stuck out for me too. The people, particularly the women from average, ordinary America don't ever see anyone represented in national politics who understands them because they've been there, and so it's understandable that she struck a chord.

Interestingly, Palin also inspired my female students at the university I was teaching at in Vietnam during the election--she represented the possibility that they could have families and reach the highest levels of politics and the idea that they didn't have to choose family or political career.
