I don't blame him, but I also don't blame Harbaugh for making a run at Manning. I'm still rooting for Manning to save the Broncos from the Derp Abyss, but I don't fault either party.

Here's the rub. Alex Smith still has a 3 year, $24 million contract on the table from SF. If he really wanted to, he could just sign it.

Let this sink in for a minute: There is a very real, plausible scenario where the 49ers might start next year with David Garrard as their starting QB.

- Peyton signs with the Broncos, keep Tewbow on as a backup
- Smith signs with Miami
- Flynn signs with Seattle

Who's left? Neckbeard signed with Dallas, Captain Courageous with the Chefs, Jason Campbell is a Bear, Henne a Jaguar. Miami probably keeps Moore as backup, same with Seattle and Tavaris. Unless you just completely overpay for someone's backup via trade, Garrard is about the only available option. Tannehill isn't going to make it down to the Niners in the draft, they'd have to go with someone like Weeden or Cousins.

Except that his agent is also Manning's agent. Tom Condon told Smith for three weeks to not sign the contract, and to hold out for something better. Now the 49ers are the front runner for Manning, and Smith is considering firing Condon. If Manning signs with the 49ers, he'll only last five games behind that O-Line, forcing the 49ers to put in not-ready Colin Kappernick, and I have no idea what will happen to Smith if he goes to Miami.

Either way, Condon could get heavily sanctioned and fined by the NFLPA.

Weren't they talking about Kaepernick giving Alex Smith a run for his money in camp? Or if Smith went all Delhomme on them they'd just throw the rookie in? Hoyer and Flynn don't have deals yet either.

They would sign Leinart or Dixon. Dixon is from the Bay Area and Leinart looked like a real QB for the 5 minutes he lasted.

It's not as if Smith is driving the bus here, subby. He's got little choice but to explore his options. He's the fat chick at the bar at closing time, and he knows it.

It'll be funny if they don't get Smith or Manning. There are 9ers fans going nuts right now over Moss and Manningham. Yes, a washed up star and the Giants #3 receiver. With a good QB, they'll be decent, but without one, disaster. Eli made Manningham better than what he is.

Yeah he's not going to get that kind of deal from anyone else, he was horrible until last year and once he works stuff out he could be a good QB.

I would laugh if Miami continues their long line of bad QB free agent decisions, don't forget it was not too long ago that the dolphins refused to give Drew Brees a guaranteed deal which precipitated his signing with the saints.

Well, if Alex Smith signs there as a free agent, that means he'll be awful. If he stays, he'll be fine. It's the law of Miami and free agent QB decisions, which is just as strong as the law of gravity.

To be fair, Brees only had 1 good year before signing with the Saints. From 01-04, half of sport talk was about how much of a bust he was.

Manning survived 3 years behind a much worse line on the Colts. He would be fine in SF. Sacks allowed say more about the QB than the line play.

As a lifelong niners fan, I say good riddance to bad rubbish. I'm sure many will disagree, but decent play and the occasional appearance of excellence should not be rewarded with even the three-year deal on the table.

Alex can't throw on the run and can't throw the deep ball. Overthrows wide receivers and under throws running backs and tight ends. He freaks out in pressure, runs away from his protection (which used to be limited, I admit).

There's lots of blame to go around that affects how you view Alex, but throwing accuracy and the inability to see the play develop down field is all him.

/See ya douche bag
//and my luck they'll sign this farker again

Actually, that makes it even funnier

McDaniels and Cassel have success in New England - Cassel goes to KC, McDaniels to Denver
Denver tries to get Cassel from KC
Cutler cries, is traded for Orton plus picks
Orton becomes Denver starter.
Peyton Hillis is traded for Brady Quinn.
Quinn becomes backup.
Tebow is drafted as one of the Cutler picks (now we have Orton, Tebow, and Quinn in Denver, all because Denver wanted Cassel)
McDaniels fired, goes back to New England
Tebow takes over for Orton, Orton goes to KC
Hillis gets tired of Cleveland, goes to KC
Quinn upset about Tebow, goes to KC
Cassel still in KC

What a clusterf*ck that turned out to be.

Not well, but you cant deny that Tebow made the Broncos relevant again and that he helped them to their first playoff win in forever. Whether or not you like Tebow's religion or his play, no one outside of Broncos fans would have given two shiats about that team otherwise.

Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson.

netweavr: The offer is still there. Alex Smith can still sign it.

While they are waiting on Manning? I highly doubt the offer is still there at the moment. If it was, he would sign it in a heartbeat knowing what is happening with Manning. The 49ers give Alex Smith the best shot at winning and is the only team he is comfortable with.

hbk72777: With a good QB, they'll be decent, but without one, disaster.

With a decent QB they were awesome. They are returning all their defensive players. The only way they are only "decent" is if they get a bad qb.

drunk_bouncnbaloruber: If Manning signs with the 49ers, he'll only last five games behind that O-Line

People claiming the 49ers OL is bad are farking retarded. A lot of those sacks where from Smith holding the ball too long, or not willing to risk an INT.

you are a puppet: So regardless of what happens, a #1 overall pick will be QB in SF next season.

I misread that as you saying the 49ers would be picking first overall in the draft next year, and my beard exploded.

Alex Smith is pissed, sure, and I don't blame him. He really trusted Harbaugh, probably enough to think that Nolan and Singletary were just being dicks to him. He also won't get a better shot to start and play well anywhere else, so he should realize that. He is probably going around to say "fark you" to the 49ers, but if Manning doesnt sign, he will accept the 3 year contract the 49ers offered.

After everything he has been through, he's not an idiot. Starting over on a new team that is worse off than the 49ers are isn't in his best interest.

You are farking nuts. He throws great on the run. How many times did he make plays out of nothing this year while on the run? A shiat ton. Including a few times he fumbled the ball or there was a high snap, he snatched it up, rolled right, and either got a pass off to a WR who caught it, or bobbled it away.

carnifex2005: Alex Smith had one good year in a contract year. I wouldn't try that hard to sign him either.

He had a good year for THAT team. He is the kind of QB that can run a game and not hurt you. He will rarely be the QB that will make a big play or two to get you home though. He is Brad Johnson to the Buccaneers. Trent Dilfter to the Ravens. Smith would be embarrassing in Miami, just like he was for many years in SF, before Harbaugh took him under his wing and made him a decent NFL QB.

IAmRight: Actually, that makes it even funnier

That is awesome.

nvmac: As a lifelong niners fan, I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

THIS

He had one year of competency out of 6 with the team. The fact that he was kept for so long only convinced me that he had blackmail material on someone important.
I wouldn't mind seeing him go, if we can get a good QB in his place.

As a Dolphins fan, I would rather have Smith than Tebow.

And coincindentally, I would rather be blinded by hot coins than castrated by flat stones.
