The key is to rub all three ingredients all over your skin. It won't help your allergies in the slightest, but people won't get near enough to you to hear your constant whining about them.

Those are not proper vampires. They are not troubled by garlic. (I hate that I know that.) But garlic is quite tasty and I would welcome more of it in my diet. Also broccoli and oranges... Yum.

um. I'm all for elderberries, I have two elder trees and make my own jelly, etc. However, which is it, do they strengthen your immune system or help with allergies?

Because allergies are your immune system being altogether too strong.

/Suffering from an autoimmune thing right now, don't need no immune system strengtheners.

You can't discuss natural allergy remedies without hailing stinging nettle. It helps stifle inflammation that occurs when you're experiencing allergy symptoms. Stinging nettle contains histamine, the chemical your body produces during an allergic reaction, so it helps you acquire tolerance. Look for 500-mg freeze-dried nettle capsules in your natural health store, and take three times a day. That's the best form for allergy relief; it won't sting because it's freeze-dried.

No, a homeopath would be suggesting you drink water that had been within thirty feet of a stinging nettle plant at one point in its journey from the sky to you.

Nobody WANTS allergies, Subby. You either have them or you don't.

Whether they flare up this Spring or not is the question.
If so..."sucks to be you."

Does nothing. I was dong netti...then I started having hives. Hives from my allergies. My allergies will not be thwarted apparently. I hate Bradford pear trees. I HATE THEM WITH THE CORE OF MY VERY SOUL.

"Cetirizine competes with histamine for binding at H1-receptor sites on the effector cell surface, resulting in suppression of histaminic edema, flare, and pruritus. The low incidence of sedation can be attributed to reduced penetration of cetirizine into the CNS as a result of the less lipophilic carboxyl group on the ethylamine side chain."

Works pretty good for most people. Take it for a couple weeks for full effect and for any slight fatigue to go away.

Keep your bedsheets washed regularly and use allergen-proof pillowcases and mattress protector.

And clean your goddamn house once in a while.

Keep one set of clothes for indoor use, one set for outdoor use. Don't lounge around your furniture in your outdoor clothes. Keep them in a hamper.

Shower daily.

For more severe cases try different drugs. Or combine cetirizine with a prescription nasal steroid. Just make sure you use the nasal spray correctly otherwise you're snorting $ for no effect.

Primum: Cetirizine

This. You can mail-order a year's supply, 365 tablets, for under $20 shipped in the US. Or you can spend your entire food budget on extracts and tinctures and essences from the local Whole Paycheck Foods -- but be sure to set aside a bit for tissues, 'cause you'll most likely still need them.

You too? I went into anaphylactic shock a few years ago after accidentally swallowing hot salsa (due to a lunch-plate mixup). Spent the afternoon in Emergency on an IV. Fortunately I work for a hospital and the Emergency dept. is only 100 feet away.

I am usually okay with eating hot food, but I can not breathe it in at all. The hubby was cutting some habaneros when I walked by, and I suddenly couldn't breathe. Scary.

I can never be a dirty hippie protestor, because pepper spray would probably kill me quite quickly.

Ah well. At least I'd go out a Fark headline. Which is a personal goal of mine.

My hubby uses stinging nettle to make cordage, but we have never tried eating it.

First hint to making your own cord... collect the nettles in fall, after the plant has died for the year. The sting is gone then. I would imagine it would be about the same for collecting it to eat - but I'm NOT going to try it.

CSB: When I was in university I started on antiallergy shots twice a week to calm down my raging hayfever. The Nazi nurse that supervised me after I got the shot delighted in holding me in the office for the maximum amount of time possible after I got it to ensure that "the shot wouldn't kill me" (direct quote). This usually led me to be late for a meeting I had with my prof for an advanced class I was taking. He got pissed and almost kicked me out of the class for being late so often. Once I told him why he told me to try stinging nettle tea. I swear that did more for me (and cost way less) than the stupid allergy shots. I did one round of the shots because I already paid for the serum and never went back. I eventually lost sensitivity to most pollens, but if I ever get hayfever stinging nettle tea fixes me up faster than pills. It tastes ok, much better than green tea IMHO. The only catch is that you have to drink it freshly brewed for the maximum effect.

/end CSB
