I've been shaving my pits for 10 years and I'm a guy. I also shave my legs from October to March. I hate being hairy. I can't imagine a woman wanting to purposely grow their armpit hair out. Even if no one sees it, it just feels nasty.

I care a bit about all of it. My girlfriend gets irritated by me not shaving my face, and I get irritated when I see underarm hair.

Here's the deal: people have expectations on how you will look in society. You're free to not follow those expectations, but don't biatch when people suddenly treat you differently. Shaving your underarms is not a ridiculously hard thing to do and isn't some global plot by the patriarchy to keep you barefoot in the kitchen. It's there because hair is associated with manliness in Western culture. Even with that, it's still not acceptable for men to change their shaving habits while in a good number of professions. If I showed up to my parking gig I had last summer with a bad 5 o'clock shadow on my face, I would have been told to rectify it the next time. If you walk into an accounting or law firm or another highly professional organization for an interview with a handlebar mustache at age 25, your odds of getting a job there decrease significantly. Women themselves have a preference about whether they like men shaved or unshaved. This isn't some special rule that is applied to women only or that's harsher on women than it is on men. It's something we all live up to.
