Rather interesting the head of the Coptic Orthodox church may actually be in charge of a church that predates the one in Rome. Obviously not by very much, a handful of years, but Christians almost certainly got to Alexandria before Rome. Also the Christian community in Syria dates back to perhaps 40 CE, if that late. And they still use Aramaic for their services and have never updated their chants used during services, so what they sing may well be very close to what was around 2000 years ago. Pretty nifty history actually.

"Soon a whole guild of low-priced shrine keepers around Europe North Africa named their own pope - Boldface the Relatively Shameless, Discount Pope of Prague Alexandria. The price war was on. If the Dutch pope would give you a hundred years out of purgatory for a shilling and a ferryman's ticket, the Discount Pope would let you out for two hundred years and send you home with the femur of a minor saint and a splinter of the True Cross. The Retail Pope would offer cheesy bacon toppings on the Host with communion and the Discount Pope would counter with topless-nun night for midnight mass." Link (new window)

I just checked Expedia. $1418 each round trip from LAX. Five grand would probably cover the whole operation. Let's do this.

it's awful to say this, but i think the world would be better without benedict. bring in a new pope, one from africa, and let him modernize the church. what am i saying this is insanity.

Careful what you ask for. A pope from Africa could be A LOT more conservative than the previous popes.

The rate of bicycle theft in the Vatican would see the dramatic rise.

Uh, yeah. That's the Ethiopic church you're thinking of there, genius. The Coptic Church is in Egypt. Different country, different language, etc. But hey, thanks for playing.
