Does anybody else just not want to live there? I mean a 2050 of allegedly 9 billion people. And if it's supposed to be so frickin' bad, how do they imagine those people will all fit? Especially with the antibiotics' efficacy wearing out.

The weird thing seems to be that dystopias don't seem to be sustainable. Horrible, terrible, monstrous times seem to happen, and seem to knock things to shiat and gone, sideways. And then times get better. With better tech and with some of the underlying circumstances changed, permanently, by the catastrophes that happened in the dystopian events.

Yep, looks like we're on a train of cars going up the roller coaster hill of "Oh shiat, this is really going to suck." Again. Some more.

Great, more fear mongering. Maybe if it helps people get over the fear of GM foods, it's not such a bad thing though.

Fat people in the US don't affect starving people in Africa. There's enough food to go around. There isn't any good way to get the food to the starving people though.

There's also the pesky fact that people waste an amazing amount of cropland feeding livestock. It's horribly inefficient. The billions of animals fed and slaughtered to feed millions could be replaced with crops that could support tens of billions of humans.

There are simple solutions to most of the world's problems. Now if only we could get out of the modern dark ages and have people accept those solutions.

Bullshiat. Explain how/why the US gov can ship a farkload of food to N. Korea (so they'll stop building nukes or something) but cant get a shiatload to starving African nations who dont have the bomb.

I have a solution: give the starving African nations the bomb so they have some food bargaining power.

We *could* get a shiatload of food to starving African nations - just like you could sell all of your worldy possessions and buy food for starving people in Africa. Both of these things are possible.

But they won't happen.

People in Africa aren't starving because there isn't enough food, globally. They are starving because they cannot produce food themselves and because they don't have enough things of value to import enough food.

They can't produce food for a lot of reasons; like their location, their technology and their resources.
They can't buy food for many of the same reasons.

Sucks to be them.

The practical question is what percentage of your income do you want to be dedicated to feeding people in Africa? If you have a personal problem with the starving going on in Africa, I welcome you to man-up and start shipping money or food in whatever way you feel is the least corrupt.

//Similarly, during the great potato famine in Ireland - boats filled with food were sailing out of Ireland. Is wasn't a lack of food, it was a lot of poor people with no money and no food. Rich people, farms, companies, were still producing and exporting food. They could have given it to the poor starving people, but they wanted money for their goods.

Other problems with shipping food to Africa are (1) beggars are choosers, and they don't want American GM food; and (2) corruption keeps it out of hungry mouths.

You seem to be arguing against yourself. If we produce more than enough food for everyone then what does it matter if some of it is meat? Hell, part of the reason we have livestock is that they can eat all sorts of stuff that's easy to grow but humans can't eat like grass.

Every time we feed the starving people, we end up with twice as many starving people. Our altruism is making mor people starve.

Every nation that has starving people has a small group of multimillionaires who run them. In order to do something about that you have to endorse socialism. Hence the US does nothing about the real underlying problems causing famine, we can't support redistribution of wealth anywhere, least we set a standard.

We're actually well on the way to solving this problem. Higher yield crops plus solar powered refrigeration means much less spoilage between farm and market.

And depresses prices for local farmers, which results in less domestic production.

Result = More starving people, less food.

LeftOfLiberal: Every nation that has starving people has a small group of multimillionaires who run them. In order to do something about that you have to endorse socialism.

How do you deal with the fact that almost all of these nations have state-directed centrally planned economies and many have outright endorsed socialism?

2012-03-17 12:02:42 PM
Well fed, secure people, contributing to society through jobs or social interactions and reasonable knowledge that their children will likely survive under normal conditions tend to have less children overall.

35 industrialized countries in the world have negative growth rates.

Insecurity, instability, unemployment/uninvolved uneducated people with little prediction that their children or families will survive under normal conditions continue to have large families with the hope that some of their offspring will survive.

50 nations of the world have stabilized their growth rates 2.0/less

Unfortunately that means that 125 nations are still growing in population, because people are living in complete and utter chaos and experiencing losses of everything, everyday, and they are trying to fulfill their basic needs but can't or won't get help due to the conditions they live in.

It's more than food, water and shelter, there has to be some predictability, some ability to have something to do, and something to strive for. Unfortunately the leaders of the 125 nations of despair only care about how many golden palaces they can erect in their own honor and don't think much of the rest of the population as a whole, except as sources of wealth extraction.

Fark_Guy_Rob: They are starving because they cannot produce food themselves and because they don't have enough things of value to import enough food.

Well, no. In almost all cases, in Africa, people starve mostly because their governments suck. We (and other nations) often do ship enough food to alleviate famine there, but we can't distribute it. Generally, neither can their own governments. There isn't the money, the infrastructure, the organization to do so.

Beyond that, most governments are corrupt, even in Africa, and when food does get there, instead of being given to the poor it's often sold to enrich a small few or to procure weapons. Ethiopia, for example, is a mountainous country with few roads and constant civil wars. There's no amount of food that you can pile up on its docks to feed the starving people in the interior. It's just never going to work that way.

As usual, the problems are more complicated than any simple explanation, left-wing or right-wing. And GMO foods aren't likely to solve the problem, either, nor have they historically. Although GMO foods have prevented a lot of starvation, they've also caused a vast amount of starvation by producing unsustainable agriculturalism and actually accelerated malthusian issues.

Smaller populations with better distribution, improved infrastructure, better economies, less environmental devastation, far less warfare, and better governments. It won't happen soon. And since First World nations understandably don't feel like getting involved with nation-building, they tend to throw money and surplus grain (and weapons sales) at it instead of trying to be more helpful.

@Chudogg, what was true in the 60's and 70's is not true today.
Most of the "basket case" 4th and 5th world nations have economies directed by the World Bank and IMF dictates, and work to serve the interests of Multinationals. In most of the 125 states of despair, there is a centralized government whose sole purpose is to extract wealth from the peasants and get a cut before it leaves the country to corporations, IMF/World Bank debt payments and/or to individual accounts in the Cayman Islands.
All that is left behind is the calamity and the despair of the people with nothing to do, nothing to care about, and nothing to identify themselves with past their most basic human needs.

I dont know about you guys, but i enjoy my space. If everyday life in the future is akin to shopping at xmas time or taking public transit at rush hour in a permanent fashion, i think i'd eventually go postal.

Also, i hope you enjoy life with about a bowl of rice per day and little to no material possessions, because if you think those tens of billions of people will all have cars, running fresh water and iPads, you have another thing coming.

Ill take a moderate lifestyle with ~3-4 billion people please.
