Doesn't matter, if you want to be successful you still have to be a mindless drone or a cutthroat sociopath. Intelligence and imagination are not rewarded.

Totally. I was such a daydreamer in elementary school. The teacher would be talking and I

SQUIRREL!

Sadly, this. Daydreaming and letting your mind wander is a skill school does a good job of stamping out. That anyone comes out at the end with the ability to think for themselves is a testament to the person, not the school system.

So, is this what they drug out of a kid with an ADD drug? I've always had this "problem" and my brain is full of trivia. I can memorize whole Python skits and deal with esoteric regulations, but can't do my own taxes.

Then you probably won't make it in a technical field. Unless you're a sociopath and a good technician.

Say, have you even entered the work force yet? Or are you just an angry college kid going off other people's cynicism?

It's called being bored.

badhatharry: It's called being bored.

Precisely, I was twelve years old before anybody realized I was so profoundly near-sighted that I couldn't read the chalkboard from my seat in a classroom (20/200) Why? because I'd never needed to. The teacher was going so painfully slow that I memorized the lessons just from hearing her talk. And they wondered why I had trouble sitting still

My mind wandered as a kid and it still wanders as an adult. I constantly have to stop people mid-sentence when I realize they're saying something interesting or important and ask them to start over, this time with me paying attention. I had a friend in high school that got used to this and would order me to focus before starting on a story. Kinda sucks...I should probably get treatment but I figger I've survived this long without doping down.

Sharper brains due to pointed heads.

Schools, especially the public ones, do not want "sharper brains". They want obedient bodies.

"Sharper brains" tend to ask questions that certain people in power don't want to be asked.

And this is me.

As much as my mind wanders, it should be sharp enough to shave the electrons off of an atom.

And I find that I can listen to people without paying a whole lot of attention. If they say something that catches my attention, I can go back and replay the last few lines in my head and figure out what it is they said. Of course, the amount of caring is usually directly connected to how much caffeine I've had.

AllUpInYa: Unfortunately, sharp minds aren't of much use if they can't focus.

I know for me it's not that I can't focus, it's that I can't focus on what stupid people are saying. Unfortunately 3 billion people are below average intelligence. Maybe it doesn't help that I come from a hunter and trapper bloodline that makes it impossible to grasp imaginary concepts like theory or words.

Cutthroat sociopaths dont like having people around who are smart enough to tell they are cutthroat sociopaths. Intellectuals are the first against the wall after a coup

Schools, especially the public ones, do not want "sharper brains". They want obedient bodies.

"Sharper brains" tend to ask questions that certain people in power don't want to be asked.

You do know that you can be an intelligent questioning being without being rude.

Example: A teacher mispells a word on the chalkboard and you notice. What do you do?

A. In front of everybody yell out in the middle of the class, "Miss you spelled misspells wrong". Having the whole class disturbed because kids tend to like to make a mountain out of mole hill and use any excuse to laugh.

B. Whilst doing your work point out to the teacher quietly that the word is wrong and trust his/her good grace to point that out to the other students.

I don't think teachers mind students questioning them or the subject matter, I believe they mind how the students do it. I am sorry but many students seem to take the path of douchdom when doing so.

No I am not a teacher.
Why yes I am married to one.

Yeah, well, nice spin there. Too bad the Reality is something totally altogether different from your POV.

Teachers aren't there to enlighten anyone's kids. They're just state-hired jailers, making sure the prole larvae don't start thinking for themselves, and to immediately crush all glimmer of hope from them. The Elite don't like it when the labor force start thinking for themselves. Classrooms are just training sessions on how to Submit and Obey.

See, by your own example, you prefer that the kid be a little eunuch and "quietly whisper" to teacher that she's wrong instead of letting the whole class know that Teacher isn't so all-knowing as he/she likes to brag that they are. That way, you have a teacher who can crack down on the little freethinker without letting the rest of the class know what it was that got him sent to the Principal's office.

Oh how teachers hate it when their ironfisted stranglehold is challenged in their little kingdoms.
