(Boston Globe)   MIT wizards conquer RIAA. Except you need an analog system, and $1875 per user and... oh forget it. Still no cure for cancer   ( boston.com) divider line

I'm sure Microsoft is proud of that grant money. You know the Gates Foundation also helps libraries in underfunded neighborhoods get computers so that poor people and their kids won't be totally unfamiliar with common software, so that they can get better jobs.

But yeah, making sure rich spoiled white kids can listen to 3 rap stations and 13 pop stations is a much better investment.

Now what would be swell would be if they're ripped in AIF or some other relatively lossless format. That way, when you record the song in real time off of the broadcast you can compress it in mp3 or aac or wmp format without getting any nasty artifacts when recoding.

Now you're really sticking it to the man.

Hey Chill out Venus, I just came up with that number because thats how many streams will work for the money. The $30k isn't by ANY means a set figure, it was something they 'negotiated' on. Make this as common as pie and don't think for a second the RIAA will negotiate some nice numbers for everyone. And screw analog music sharing. My archos jukebox works just fine thank you.

On a broader note: The phenomenon of recording artists making money or careers off singing is relatively new. There ain't a farking guarantee of enforceabilty no matter how many laws anyone makes. GUESS WHAT: Everyone from britney to garage bands might have to recognize big $$ off art isn't necessarily gonna happen. (waaaah).

Shutting down the wide variety of internet music stations was the RIAA's biggest victory and nobody concedes it. Guess what, you farkers are force-fed the same ol crap from all the bigwigs with enough money to get all the licensing and own a broadcaster. And the majority of them in ANY large city can be traced to a handful of owners.

I got several Ipods worth o' music on kazaa and a dsl line thats on all night. Enjoy.

Winstein and Mandel never thought it would take so long to build LAMP.

This is the only part I read. MIT is horrible.

And so they can be forced into eternal subserviance to Microsoft.

I once had a college radio show. It broadcast on am. It was free. I could take requests from up to 6 billion users by telephone. Only about 2 ever called in though.

If using analog technology makes sharing music OK, how far off is the LP-rom drive? Anyway, To hell with the RIAA. Don't buy CDs. www.dontbuycds.org
