well this should be fun. and better than random comments scattered though the PSAEF. OTOH it's one more tab to keep open. OTOH 2 i have so many open tabs that one more really doesn't count.

I think it's just a continuous scroll, kes.

Actually, we're in there. You just have to scroll down a bit - look for U-Man's cat pic from last week.

  2011-06-01 08:53:04 PM
Yep, continuous scroll. Obviously Farktography.net will continue to be where we propose and schedule themes. This will be a great place for more general discussion and for people less familiar with the contest to find their way to Farktography.

Awesome! I've always been envious of the P/Sers and their main page linkage. Now we've got it too!

Also, this would be a good place for the vote enable or picture deletion requests.

there will be forced pagination (?) at about 1000 posts, or at least that's how it works in the photoshop forum. You'll be able to skip to the latest posts quickly (again I assume).

i use the "single page" thingy and then the "start 2 days ago" and "show 2 days".

right now my page header is "single page" "start one week" "show one week". in time i might change that to XX days.

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, some of you will remember my post about my grandson Austin, who I was teaching photography.

Tonight, my daughter got a call that he's in the running for a scholarship based on his photos. I have the nagging feeling that there's a scam involved somehow. Anyone ever heard of this?

BTW - thanx y'all for the votes on my Urban Art. I honestly never expected to do as well as I did. (Hell, at 6 am I was first... good thing I have a strong heart).

I'm finally finding some ideas and resources for the shadow/light one coming up...

You spoke for me on all points, Yugoboy! I too, am surprised to be in the #2 position that I currently occupy. Oh no, now I'll be expecting myself to be up there all the time! Anyhow, I'm honored to be among the names I have come to know well from my lurking days in this thread and others. It's an education just browsing the photos and reading the comments.

Although I don't come with the stellar PS reputation that you do, Yugo, I too have recently renewed my hobby. I am looking forward to the weekly kick in the butt to "get out there and take better photos" that Farktography offers.

Thank you! I was just thinking that I might have to sit out the Scanner as Camera topic, (SOB! Just getting into it, and I wasn't getting anything I liked...) and then I had a totally different idea! I don't know how well it will be received, but under the circumstances, I'm just pleased to have solved the problem in a reasonably self-satisfying manner. And that's why I'm here! (Well, that and I get to see some really fine photos, plus tips and tricks along the way. By the way, thank you to SilverStag for mentioning LAB mode during the clouds topic. That's something that I had checked out once upon a time, and forgot about it! Stupidly, I had forgotten to enable voting on ALL my photos in that contest, but at least I can use them again some other time, hopefully with LAB and voting goodness enabled.

If you ever forget to enable voting again, be sure to request it in the thread or here. There actually have been people who did not want their photos envotinated, so I don't tend to envotinate without a request just in case.

Yeah, I figured this also for me. But I conned myself into buying a $60 scanner (decent resolution, says it's good for 3-d objects; Epson Perfection V30 --hope so, or I'm taking it back!). Will be picking it up shortly at my local Frys. And what the hell--I'll stick it under the bed with everything else when not in use, and I did get the projector freznal lenses, so I might get some neat effects from using those. And there are old photos I'd like to scan at some point.

Or, I may totally fail. I can't believe I suckered me into buying a $60 prop for a single contest, though.

Someone was bemoaning the colors in their sunset not being what they wanted, and you said something like, "Remember, LAB mode is your friend." Indeed. I was able to revive several photos that were badly in need of me acquiring a new PS skill.

Elsinore: Congrats to bucky_bacon on his "Urban Art" theme win!

Yes, big congrats, BB! Though I was close behind most of the way, I was actually hoping I would not overtake you. IMHO, yours really seemed to hit the spirit of the problem. And I am completely giddy at my first top-ten placing!

And since it was widely appreciated, I'll recommend that anyone near the San Francisco Bay Area check out the the stairs. Lots of opportunities for interesting photos in various sections of the mural as you ascend. (I photographed my dog, Luna just in front of the moon...) And when you get to the top, there is a exceptional view of the ocean.

It's the butterflies I have trouble with. I have only been able to get within ten feet of one once in the past three years or so.

/Curious, do you really have e-mail notification on? I wondered about that ... you must get a lot of false alarms, no? Fairly common word for a screen name--luckily I don't have that problem, although I do wish that you could change your screen name and keep the same account. When I picked mine, it was about my tenth choice, and I was trying to come up with weirder names that hadn't been taken already.

With wildlife, you often have to anticipate rather than follow. In other words, look at what they're doing and get pointed at a spot where a critter is likely to go in the future, rather than looking at where it is now.

Then wait.

It doesn't always work, but it's much more likely to succeed than chasing them, because approaching movements tend to freak things out the most, for obvious reasons.

sleeping: It doesn't always work, but it's much more likely to succeed than chasing them, because approaching movements tend to freak things out the most, for obvious reasons.

With wildlife, it's sometimes serendipity.
I've got some pics to post as soon as I off-load my camera of yesterday morning. I was downtown (major city) photographing a skyscraper* and in the minipark in front of the building, I encountered a red-tailed hawk. It literally allowed me to take a couple dozen shots from maybe 20 feet. The light wasn't the greatest, and I didn't feel like risking taking the time to change the ISO, so a lot are blurry, but there's a few.
Sheer luck & right place right time. The only patience required there was keeping myself from rushing the poor bird and ruining a terrific 5 minutes.

*I get that a 40-ish story building isn't a "skyscraper" in the megalopolis world of NYC, Shanghai or Tokyo, but for most cities, it's pretty tall. It's a big part of our skyline and visible for miles around.

Yugoboy: I encountered a red-tailed hawk. It literally allowed me to take a couple dozen shots from maybe 20 feet.

Yeah, red tails do seem to be quite approachable when they're up high on a perch. I don't think they see people on the ground as much of a threat. I have tried sneaking up on one on a fence post at my level, though, and that didn't work at all....

Ah yes, the Gretzky method--go where the puck is going to be--I know it well ... but the damn things are so rare around here!

i wasn't sure i'd like it but the notification goes to my yahoo account which i check semi regularly. it has been nice to see what folks post in response to my comments in threads other than 6&7.

Or, I may totally fail. I can't believe I suckered me into buying a $60 prop for a single contest, though.

Heh heh heh....another one :) My plan to increase scanner sales is working perfectly :)

I think I'm getting my $60 bucks worth for my purchase. :-)

But I will say, it's the most I've spent for a single farktography contest yet.

Now that was funny, right there.

There were indeed times I had fun. Herding Girl Scouts seemed more an exercise in herding cats for much of the time, so it was not without its...challenges. Off to check the Farktography contest :)

Excellent job, ravnostic, and many others as well.

Being a newbie here, I am really enjoying Farktography for the rich photo-friendly environment that it is. I've never really had "photo friends," and i think that this has provided the incentive I have been looking for. It's like having a hundred or so other photographers looking over my shoulder, all of whom have a potentially better photo on THEIR LCD. I don't mean that in a bad way, because friendly competition motivates me.

Thank you all for giving my learning curve a badly-needed kick in the tush.

it certainly is that.

I've never really had "photo friends," and i think that this has provided the incentive I have been looking for.

when i first got started in photography in the early 70s i was encouraged by semi pros and pros and it made a big difference for me. then for 30 years or so i lost that influence then got it back with farktography. the quality in those intervening years show that too. not to say it's great now :)

Wow. Reminds me of a high school friend who collected old cameras. I think his online gallery is still up: Link

I kind of like the 'behind-the-scenes' feel of taking pictures of cameras. There's something about it that's just kind of fun.

OK, now I am sure I have found the right group! I started in high school. I told my journalism teacher that I was interested learning photography, so he tossed me an old medium format TLR, a roll of Tri-X, and said, 'Here ya go. Sports department needs headshots. Deadline's on Friday." That was the extent of my "training." I found a couple of kids who knew a scrap more than I did (Like how to load the FILM in that monster...) and the rest was trial and error, plus the instruction manual that I found squashed down in the bottom of a cabinet. I found one other kid who knew how to use a light meter. Her single piece of advice actually served me the best of all. "If the meter says there isn't enough light, just open it up all the way and hope."

Curious: hat's a pretty impressive collection. i actually have 6 or 7 of those myself. you still have a minolta SRT101 don't you? i had a SRT102 as my first 35mm camera.

AAAAAKKKK! The mention of the Minolta SRT102 is enough to make me scream. That too, was my first (actually only) 35mm, and it was stolen in the early '90s from the computer lab that I ran at a junior high school. (It was engraved with my SS number, and I would happily buy it if it ever turned up) It's loss was what sent me into photographic remission, from which I have only recently emerged. The Nikon D300 is a soothing presence, and it guides me through the transition.

Now you've got me wanting to go take photos of all my old funky cameras...at least the ones that thieves have allowed me to KEEP, that is.

  2011-06-13 12:13:30 PM
My photographic training came in High School as well. I could NOT pass chemistry to save my soul, and I had to get enough credits to graduate. So I spent an extra year in High School. I took 3 AP classes and a second year of vocational photography.

I got pretty good at it, and then went nowhere withit for a long time. Until digital it was too expensive. Until my recent birthday in April it wasn't as much fun, because I didn't have an SLR, and adjusting anything on an Olympus Cammedia camera is possible, but complicated.

Here's hoping the old rusty skills are on the increase. Still fighting the difference between what the camera says and what my computer shows (in terms of brightness).

  2011-06-13 12:29:26 PM
I started with a 110 point-click in the early 80's and was ocasionally allowed to use my dad's Pentax MG. By the age of 8, I had graduated to a Kodak S-10 35mm point-click, and was taking such wonderful compositions as "the cat's arse" or "the dog digging in my sandbox." I also learned key principles like "Backlighting and auto exposure don't mix"

When I was 15, my dad gave me his Pentax, a 35mm prime, and a 200mm tele-macro prime. I put it in aperture priority and left it there, while I used the aperture to control exposure. Eventually I started to notice the relationship between aperture and DoF. By 19, I was graduated HS, failed out of college, and looking for work until I shipped off to the military, so I started substitute teaching at my high school. I had never taken photography in HS, but the teacher knew that I had rocked chemistry, and needed someone that she could call on frequently and for several days at a time while she took her son to an out-of-state medical clinic, and still keep the lab running. This is when/where I learned to develop film, and analog tricks like dodging, burning, contrast adjustments, etc. Then I joined the navy and the shutter in the Pentax broke.

So I got a 2.3 MP digital Point-shoot and forgot everything I had learned. Days before my second deployment, I knew there was more to photography that I was missing, so on a bit of an impulse, I picked up a Nikon D50, a couple lenses, and some SD cards and started re-learning the basics. Most of that deployment was spent in "landscape" mode, because it was the only pre-programmed function that wouldn't pop up the flash all the time. Since then, there has been the occasional "Ah ha!" moment, a D90, and a huge re-delving into film photography.

Nice one! We rarely have them here--I'm envious. They are SO photogenic, aren't they?

Birds o' prey, we have plenty. And their presence makes me look longingly at long lenses. I have some red-tails, a kestrel and a Harrier, but darn if they wouldn't have looked better through a 400mm...

Sounds like more of a problem with NY. The NY bashing thread is here (pops)

Seriously, though. I've actually considered doing that mod for stability with long lenses. I have an extra rifle stock, and some electric triggers from paintball markers. I'd also take it nowhere near where any of the states where I currently or have recently lived (CT, NY, HI).

Oh...oh god, I'm so sorry :( My "purse cam", the Canon A620 pretty much died a few months back...I could put batteries in it, but it has a short somewhere and eats through them, so it's useless at this point. I feel so naked when I'm out now with only the cell phone camera with me....

i had a vivitar 70-220 many years ago. it was a whale. heavy like you wouldn't believe. great lens but damn, impossible to use for any length of time. got a pistol grip for it (it had a tripod mount mid lens) and all my problems went away. when i was using that rig regularly i could hand hold below a 1/15 usually. the grip also had a tripod mount which was a nice feature.

i still have both the lens and the grip but had to replace the lens. it got moldy in katrina. i'll try and get a photo of it tomorrow or this weekend.

Elsinore: I feel so naked when I'm out now with only the cell phone camera with me....

Oh don't get me started on the evil that is teh cell "camera". So far in the past week since the last Canon died I have missed:
One of the worst thunderstorms here in a decade, complete with the loss of half my garden, and the neighbors' trees felled,
Hail
Some of the most spectacular daytime lightening in a decade
The great "Smoke Out" of 2011, worse than 1998, with a sizable chunk of the Okefenoke and Flagler County on fire, and our sun doeth not give its light, and the nearly full moon has turned to blood...

and my remaining sunflowers are really pretty.

I hate this. It's like missing some fingers or toes or something, or walking because the car is in the shop, et cetera. Fark me, I have no cash, and now I know a guy who has a used Canon Powershot SX10 that he wants to sell :(

Heh. I started in the early '80's with a 135 "Brownie" that used those newfangled flash bars instead of flash cubes, and then graduated to a 110. Hell, I even did my own B&W developing in drafting class in Jr. High! For the bulk of the 90's I was a dirt poor college kid that occasionally did throw-away 35 mm and teh Mal*Wart development center with bonus double prints. Digital made me the 'photographer' that I am now.Dad would never loan me his treasured Nikon, so I had to learn how to do everything myself; now I teach him how to use his Canon K.I.S.S. camera :)

Knowwhatchamean. I was 1/2 way into my 2nd day in the beautiful Colorado Rockies when my Canon xTi died. My professional photographer aunt let me use her Nikon p/s, and it felt like I was missing my left knad. After an hour or so, I gave up; had a beer, and waited for her to finish her shooting in beautiful Silverton, Co. Haven't gotten so far as to see what the p/s did while I was there.

Came home and bought a 2nd hand xTi right away. Has less than 1K shutter triggers to it; hope it lasts a lot longer than that (I do so hate trusting craiglisters, but given what I'd found on e-bay (not much better odds, nor price) and Amazon (they want WHAT?!? for an xTi?!?), I took the gamble.

Thanks, Else, for the congrats!!

Yep, I'm actually quite fond of my 101. I've got a 55m f/1.8 prime lens and a 28-50mm f/3.5 zoom, and they're all in absolutely pristine condition. I got the whole set from my Grandpa who bought it new way back when and basically used it twice. I keep trying to force myself to use it more, but I'm instinctively cautious about film. There's more pressure to to get every shot right the first time. I think it's actually a good thing-not to mention the better color response and dynamic range.

/And yes, his collection was ridiculously impressive. It took up his entire closet.

I turned the counter over on my XTi. My son is using it now and I've moved on to a 50D. The XTi was where I realized that the kit lens (that came with my original Digital Rebel) wasn't very good and replaced it with a Tamron 17-50 which is a very good lens fully up to the extra pixels of the 50D and then some.

My introduction to photography was a high end Kodak 126 Instamatic with a zoom lens given as a wedding present in 1968 (yeah, I'm old). That lit a fire and the Kodak was soon joined by a Canon FTb and it went on from there.

My present pocket camera is an Olympus 770SW -- a waterproof camera. It's not really as much better than a cell phone camera as it should be, but the waterproof part plus the shockproof part (the SW in the model) means no worries. And I got it when I learned it existed because waterproof meant beer proof so I could take true beer goggles pictures:

www.lafinlarry.net

I used that picture because it's 2 TFers. And the bartenders where I hang out know what's going to happen when I ask for a glass of tap water with no ice -- gotta rinse the camera before (don't want to get my beer dirty) and after (lens cover can stick shut if not clean) beer goggles pictures. Walking up to someone in a bar and sticking your camera in a glass of beer completely disarms people.

Oh, and every bit of equipment mentioned in this post came from the same outstanding, long-lived local camera shop. And I can still take pictures of the same wife.

Good morning. The "thumbnails" option from ImageHack html doesn't play nice anymore either; I had to list my embiggened pics with just a redirect. Not real sure what that's all about.

Great stuff in the contest today; I'm kinda waffling on the last pic I posted now, found a better one, but I already submitted, so screw it, let 'em ride. I guess I was going for more subtle shadings instead of glaring contrasts, and it just wasn't what I thought it would be in retrospect.

I was able to get within four feet of it, standing on a boardwalk and looking down low at the animal trail through the wiregrass and scrub. I managed to get about five pictures of it before the flash started to annoy it and it hauled bunny ass away.

I'm hitting the road now, so anyone with a Farkolga model 317 shooting at f/9.46 can get me at 9535th of a second on the iphone.

Lets see that get parsed :) Give me a call, guys, it's gonna be a loooong drive tonight.

Hey Ravnostic...great shot of the power plant near Telluride. How did you like the switchback road that leads up to it? We're looking to do that road this fall, coming over the mountain and down into Telluride.

If the road to which you refer is the one in this picture--we didn't take it. They had oodles of snow this season, which made for the wonderful waterfall shot--but also meant the road up wasn't yet open (even at this resolution, I think you can tell it's loaded with the stuff). Do you happen to know the name of the falls on the left in this image? My Aunt did not.

That's Ingram Falls. The road is the Black Bear Pass road, one of the most difficult jeep roads in Colorado. It's a one-way trail from east to west. The easy part is on the way up to Black Bear Pass. The hard part is on the way down, near Ingram Falls. The trail is a set of rocky steps, very narrow, with a slight curve and a serious off-camber angle, which then leads to the very tight switchbacks. You can drive up the switchbacks to the level of the power plant, but beyond that point the trail is one way, down only. The whole trail is usually open sometime in July, but with all the snowpack this year I'll be surprised if it opens at all.

I didn't have a dog in this race, but I did enjoy the photos, and clicked "vote" until my little fingers were numb. Nice job, INBD.

Speaking of dogs and races, there was a mention of rabbits a little higher up...

Don't worry...I'm not racing Luna. She is a retired rescue greyhound, and couch potato. The sight of a bunny on the trail however, is the one thing that will raise her ears to full attention. No bunnies were harmed in the making of these photos. They are in the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, and I'd probably get fined if Luna chased a rabbit. I think I'd be executed if she went after a Red-Legged Frog.

Never participate in Farktopgrahy contests, but photography has been a hobby of mine for years now. Never share much, but in a mood to share some of my recent "keepers" . These all are just a kit lens on a Canon XS taken locally with post processing. Usually shoot with my 50mm but I enjoy the kit lens in a lot more situations.

Enjoy.. Or don't. :)

Those are excellent. Recently hoppered for a future contest is "Black and White II", and either of those first two would make excellent entries. Or, "Abandon all hope II: Life without people" is in a week, and that first one would do well there. I'm no expert, but I think your composition and technique is first-rate and I'd encourage you to participate. And even if you don't--I'd love to see more of your work here on occasion. The second shot, in particular, really draws me in.

styckx --echoing the sentiments above and hoping we'll see you in a future contest! Just be sure to read up on the FArQ as to acceptable and unacceptable post-processing. A lot of the filtery stuff and spot treatments (other than corrections for dust, hot pixels or a stray blemish) aren't allowed for Farktography. Feel free to ask if you have questions about any of that!

Hoping to see some awesome fireworks shots in here after this weekend!

In unrelated news, ran my first 5k this morning. I've only been training since May, and my best training time was 36 minutes. Did the race this morning in 33:41. Hoping to do a 5 miler at the end of the month in ultimate preparation for a pretty sizable local 5 miler on Thanksgiving.

A couple of weeks ago I had some trouble with my images on Flickr. I was definitely below the 200kb threshold, but Fark kept rejecting me anyway. I wound up having to resize each of my second and third images twice before they were accepted.

I just uploaded my pics for tomorrow and then used the scratchpad to try to post them. They seem to have worked OK there.

How reliable is the scratchpad? If the images posted OK there, will I be OK tomorrow to avoid the same problem I had two weeks ago?

Elsinore: Indeed--I got side tracked and forgot to post the congrats in here--mea culpa! Congrats to U-Man for his "umop 3p!sdn" win this past week!

Hope I didn't step on any toes--the contest had closed many hours before; I didn't mean to jump the gun, but given this forum is new and people weren't used to it, I thought maybe it would be okay to acknowledge the win as had been done for me a few weeks ago.

Yugoboy; there's been intermittent flicker issues; hopefully one of their users will post some tips (I know there's some sort of 'fix' or rationale--but I don't use it so I[don't]RC).

My hosting doesn't suffer from that sort of problem, but even so, I've had the occasional issue--and never when it's appropriate (because--it's nevar appropriate). Stuff happens--such is life on the WWInterweb, etc. :-)

No, you're fine :) I had meant to post in here Sunday when I posted on farktography.net, but it just totally slipped my mind this week. All the holiday stuff really threw my groove off.

Yugoboy: Make sure you're uploading Fark-sized originals to Flickr (and posting the originals, not their resizes), because if you're relying on Flickr to resize for you, their algorithm leads to file size bloat. This is a good thing for your images (they use very very low compression), but a bad thing for posting to Fark. Also, it's "technically" 200k for the limit, but images frequently fail to load in the 180k-200k range, and I've seen a number drop in the 150k-180k range, too. It's usually safest to keep file sizes in the 130k-150k max size. Typically, I try to keep mine under 100k.

But as to your question, if it works in the Scratchpad, it *should* work in the thread. Flickr is typically pretty reliable for image hosting, though it does have its occasional hiccups.

  2011-07-06 11:01:47 AM
Well, the largest of this week's images is like 142kb. "Fortunately" most of my good entropy pix are from my old camera. While I love entropy and decay, I haven't had much opportunity with my new camera, but lots with my old one. File sizes with the Olympus are far smaller (it's a 3.1mpx) than the Nikon (12+mpx) so resizing isn't as traumatic to the file size.

I resized to 800px wide and linked to the 640px version.

Still working on the file hosting and getting ahead on themes for now. Quality's important, and I'm learning a lot from y'all about perspective and outside the box and the sheer artistry of photography. I'm surprising myself by pulling out the 18-55 far more often than I thought I would. I'm normally a huge fan of zoom and macro shots, so to be thinking wide-angle is new for me.

Here's hoping!

  2011-07-06 02:35:26 PM
You may still find that resizing to 800 pixels and allowing Flickr to resize to 640 results in too large a file size, especially if there's foliage in the image. But something under 150k should be ok. If you find you post something in the thread and it disappears into the ether, let us know, because it can usually be restored.

Wide angle is definitely a different experience. I found it completely changes compositions for me. We're glad to have you aboard!

Well, for only the second time in 30 years, I'm going to go get close to a shuttle launch (hopefully) tomorrow. The first time was #2 when I was a kid, and now a friend of mine has won tickets to be as close as they will allow... will be leaving within the hour, but I am expecting to be coming back Sunday.

Sadly, I will be using a borrowed camera, as both of my Canons are still D.O.A.

I hope I can get some great shots from the causeway on Sunday if that's when it gets bumped to, because I'll be letting my wife use "my" ticket, since she has never been up-close to a launch before. We tried to catch the last two, but the rescheduling always wound up landing on one of her work days :/

We need a good 'Space' related contest soon.

I'm jealous.

The last Shuttle launch I went to was STS-41-G in 1984. It's one of my earliest memories, and I still remember it like it was just last week. My dad worked for one of the contractors for the payload and won a company lottery for pressbox tickets. Even from across the water, the shockwave knocked me on my arse (granted, I was three).

Re: Space Contest, we've done one, I'm itching for another, too. I'll suggest it in the farktography.net forum. Head on over and vote for it :D

If you use ImageShack, sometimes that happens. I have had *awesome* pics that could have gotten higher-than-average votes, but the links became unstable and my entries were deleted. Made me so frustrated and mad I almost gave up entirely. Sometimes the helpful mods would try to re-link the pics for me, but that rarely worked. Since I have registered with ImageHack it hasn't been as bad or as frequent, but every once in a while...

Now if you're using a different host, I don't know what to tell ya. I hope you have better hosting success in the future, and maybe the fine folks on here might have some suggestions for you. Good luck!

FWIW, I restored all the broken images (which of course were no longer broken). Seems to me Google announced something about ending Picasa at some point, so maybe that's part of what's going on? It's odd for Google to be unreliable like that.

What program are you using to process your images?
Several photoediting/manipulation programs have a "save for web" type of feature that allows you to save at a lower "quality" to trade file size for image size.
Knowing your software would allow us to help you more successfully.

  2011-07-21 02:32:16 PM
I have a batch resizer that I've played with a little with good results, but unfortunately I don't remember the name, and it's on my home computer :/. I'll link it up tonight

  2011-07-21 03:33:33 PM
Are you uploading to flickr at 640 size or are you still allowing flickr to resize down to 640?

I don't use flickr, but I've heard this complaint enough times to know that if you allow flickr to resize, there's a good chance it'll vastly expand the size of the file in its over-eagerness to maintain decent quality.

If you resize to within Fark limits (640 max width, 1100 max height) before uploading to flickr, it shouldn't change the file sizes and so what you upload should be what you get. Of course when doing that, you'll also want to play with the JPG quality to get the file size itself within limits (generally 140K or less).

Dovetailing off what BecauseISaidSo said, basically Flickr uses a high quality compression algorithm to ensure your photos look as good as possible when they are resized. High quality means large file sizes. So if you let Flickr resize for you, you will end up with file size bloat. Flickr considers this a feature because they're protecting your image qualitiy (unlike Facebook, which mangles your images 10 ways to Sunday even if you've already compressed them and even if you choose their higher quality option). In addition to the save-for-web option in your photo editor, the easiest way to deal with this is to only upload Fark sized images to Flickr--both in file size and pixel real estate. The max Fark sizes are 640 pixels wide and 1100 tall. The max file size is approximately 200k, however, images can and do drop at smaller file sizes, notably above 150k. It's safest to aim for 130k and under, and I personally try to keep it under 100k. When you post your Fark-sized photos from Flickr, be sure to grab the original size from the posting options; anything else, even if the large size is the same as the original, will be subject to the re-compressed file size bloat. You can always upload a larger version separately to Flickr and link to that from your Farktography post.

Batch re-sizer may or may not be the most quality-friendly option.

Gimp^ is a great free program (a bit of a learning curve, but very robust and full-featured) that will allow you to retouch and re-size and save in a manner most likely to keep you happy and competitive.

FWIW - it's robust and featured enough that several of Fark's best "photoshoppers" are actually Gimpers.

Cool.

Any suggestions on an easy way to resize/compress images? I've used The GIMP but its quite slow and tedious.

As a side note, I'm running out of room on Flickr, does Picasa use a lower quality compression for links, or would that lead to the same issue?

  2011-07-21 11:09:03 PM
Actually, I use Gimp myself, 'cause I'm generally only doing a couple of shots at a time for web consumption. The few times I've had tons to web-size at once, I've used Fastone, and it's got a number of settings to bring your sizes down, but I found it cumbersome for my work flow - besides, I watermark my larger scale images, and I like to place them individually.

Set up a new Flickr account at Mista Sparkle 2.

Either you're using an old computer, or you're trying to use Gimp for batch compression. Don't. Use it for the 3 images for the contest and batch compress with what you're comfortable with. Also, compress each photo individually. Unless they're all of the same subject file sizes should be different. Last week I took some photos at an air show. The pics were of airplanes and blue sky. Even with that, some photos were in the low 2mb range all the way up to the mid 3mb range.

Hope this helps.

I've had remarkable success with Irfanview (dot com). The program file is small, it's safe (I've used it for some 15 or so years, no problems), and by installing the plug-ins, there's a 'save for web' version that does a very good job. Click 'open file', resize to what you need, click 'save for web', choose the quality (it tells you the expected filesize, so you can get as much bang-for-the buck as possible), and save. Easy-peasy--but do keep in mind about the iffy 200K limit--130K or so is usually fine.

The caveat is the next-to-most recent version had some issues regarding it's resizing qualities and it's 'save for web' functionality--which have now been fixed. So should you go this route, make sure that the mirror from which you download has the very latest version (given at the irfan site), and same for the plug-ins.

Next week's theme is "Fifteen Minutes": Travel via any means available (walking, driving, swimming, boating, flying, cruise missile, interplanetary ion thruster, etc.) fifteen minutes away from where you live. Take pictures of whatever is there.

Apparently, the presence of Farktography.net means this forum is superfluous?

  2011-08-01 09:59:52 PM
Well, Farktography.net came first before we had this forum, but this forum was always intended, much like the PS'ers have their place on Fark. However, there is a lot of good technical information that's more easily accessible on Farktography.net since it's a forum set up instead of a running thread. This thread should be the preferred place to ask for envotination/disenvotination/deletion requests. And since it's a more general, informal place, anyone's welcome to post random stuff and pictures that have nothing (or everything) to do with current themes.

It's nice to have an actual forum on fark.com for Farktography but most of our discussion for running the contests and sharing tips will probably always be at farktography.net. Still checking this forum once a week or two can get some people involved who would otherwise miss out.

This is what I hope will be the major benefit of having the forum here. It will be a more obvious "Hey check us out!" that will hopefully result in even more participation.

Based on the date of the photo, the two stars above and to the right of that should be Pollux (leftmost) and Castor, for you Geminids out there. :-)

Good to know, thanks :) I had a landscape shot from that night taken with my wide angle that captured a couple very faint shooting stars. Unfortunately, they'd turned on the regular white light in the observatory at that point, and the long exposure meant the doorway was very overexposed.

On any given night you can catch a few meteors--there's no particularly recognized shower in June at the time (happens to be my dad's birthday, btw.).

However, at the more-or-less opposite end of the calendar, Dec. 13th this year, are the Geminid showers. Unfortunately there will be a near-full moon at that time. In fact, after midnight when viewing is best, every shower for the remaining year will have a moon screwing up things. Best chance is the Orionids, October 21st the moon will be in last quarter, and it will be possible (though of course difficult) to capture meteors in the same frame as the moon--and not have the moon completely blown out in relation to them (less than 2 seconds, perhaps.)

...and I'll be working that night. :-( And the next, as well.

//Poo.

Heresy. People have been killed for less. Well, kicked off of telescopes, at least. There's a whole etiquette about lights (especially white lights) among observational astronomers. Opening any door or dome with lights on, pointing flashlights upwards, or even using car headlights is strictly verboten.

Oh I know. They'd had the red light on the whole time, so everyone was dark adapted, but I think there was a problem the telescope or something, and they couldn't see well enough with the red light to address it, so the white light came on. I'm just gonna have to go back and re-shoot a wide landscaped shot another time.

Yeah, but that hasn't seemed to help in the past. What I should have done was head over to Mauna Kea when I lived in Hawai'i to be above the clouds. I was still too butt-hurt though from being on the wrong side of the world and missing the first ring solar eclipse in North America since seventh grade.

Other comments in the thread further explained bokeh, particularly sleeping's comment. I don't see any entries that have broken the rules. Bokeh does not require bright/obvious out of focus disks; the word simply means "blur" in Japanese.

Some helpful links for those who want to read more: Wikipedia's entry on Bokeh (new window)
Ken Rockwell's article on bokeh (new window)

At this point, I'd invite anyone wanting to discuss bokeh/the theme itself to move the discussion to either the Farktography forum on Fark (new window) or the forums on farktography.net (new window) so the thread doesn't get further clogged up with commentary.

Thank you, and yes! I'm still giddy!

Getting the solution was really easy, I just thought, "what universally represents 'out of focus'?" and the answer was clear, pardon the pun. The only tough part was finding eyeglasses with a prescription that worked. My own pair rendered the "focus" area upside down and skewed. (farsighted, astigmatic.) If you try this at home, find someone with a prescription for distance only.

Hmm... now what has "never or not recently been alive," and how can I get really close to it?

American Decency Association: such a nice little clique here isn't it

Well, as I mentioned elsewhere in that thread, Farktography draws a wide range of photographers, from amateur to pro using anything from cell phone cameras to large format film. We've always been a welcoming group that stays away from disparaging commentary. There are are certainly regulars and others who participate semi-regularly, but Farktography folks have been surprisingly un-cliquish over the years.

As for the bokeh discussion itself, the thread was getting clogged up with the whole debate over what constitutes bokeh and what doesn't. We already allow a lot more cross-talk in Farktography threads than in PS threads, but at some point, it gets to be too much in a thread that's supposed to be almost exclusively photos/entries. Technical discussions really should be held off-thread.

I hope you'll engage more here as well as Farktography.net. The themes are proposed and discussed there, and input is appreciated from everyone.

  2011-08-22 05:26:37 PM
I have to admit, when I'm considered part of the 'nice little clique', given some of the forum issues I've been a part of (cause of, what-ev-ar--tomayto, tomahto), I have to snork back my Coke from the nose into which it went when I busted out laughing after taking a drink from my sippy cup.

//learning to play well with others can be/has been/is sometimes a challenge for me. Keeping it out of the contests, however, is not.

  2011-08-24 12:33:43 AM
As long as everyone is courteous and nice to one another and try and help rather than whine, all is acceptable. There's no need for spite or righteous anger when others are simply mistaken or even if there's a difference in opinion (which there almost always is when one "serious" artist is up again another "serious" artist). We should all be able to help and offer advice while at the same time having a little bit of friendly competition.

I think most of you are assholes though, so.......

I'm inclined to blame your service provider. Does it help if your clear your cache? I used to have some trouble with photos not loading over on Caturday, but then I switched to comcast, and haven't had problems since. Well, THOSE sort of problems, anyway!

Also also wik, it wasn't just you, U-Man. I hadn't refreshed the thread in 10 or 20 minutes when I posted that, so I hadn't actually seen your response before I typed mine.

  2011-08-26 10:57:22 AM
So to help a n00b, is it desirable to have comments about a photo be in that thread or should ALL comments be here, whatever the topic?

  2011-08-26 02:09:17 PM
If the comments are specifically referencing a photo (things like "Wow, oddmind, what an awesome shot!" or "That lighting is awesome, oddmind, how did you do that?" or "Hey, oddmind, glad to see you participating!") then it can stay in (along with follow-ups like "Thanks!" or "I used natural light with fill-flash from camera left"). If it becomes something more detailed than a single back and forth (e.g. sharing recipes, unnecessary/off-topic (or barely on-topic) side conversations), then we need to consider taking it off-thread. A post saying "message me more about that" or "I'd like to hear more--let's talk in the forum" would work well for that sort of thing. We've gotten kind of lax with this in Farktography, partly because we didn't have a Fark forum until recently, and in general, Farktography threads have always been a bit more conversational. But especially now that we have our very own place on Fark, it would be helpful (and contribute less thread clutter) if we could keep the more involved stuff off-thread. So I guess it comes down to Kudos--yes, Full Conversations--not so much. Does that make sense?

  2011-08-26 04:47:26 PM
Yes, Elsinore, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for spelling it out for me.

I was reading the rules for this contest ind it said things couldn't be alive. How does a spider web not be alive?

  2011-08-29 06:41:22 PM
By simply being?

life
1. The condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.

What scares me is where the hell are the living spider webs and how do we kill them?

*jumps back into teh shadows*

  2011-08-30 06:51:32 PM
Yeah, what Vortex Dweller said. A spider web is no more alive than a glass of milk. Both come from living things--but neither are in and of themselves 'alive'. Organic, yes. But the theme didn't say 'nothing organic'.

Thanks, oddmind. I was surprised, and pleased with 3rd, given the shot was taken with the DP lens.

The splash was very limited on the milk drops. Pretty much the extent of it's spread is in the photo. But when we were using the same triggers with the fishtank, there was definitely some objects that got us and the cameras moist (particularly the slinky. Hint: don't drop the whole thing in the fishtank, let it string out from your hand...)

Elsinore: Congrats to oddmind for the "Pathways" win this week!

Thanks. Wow, that was a squeaker. There were many photos that could have been tops, in my mind. Two that really caught my eye were 1) yours, Elsinore--the raked B&W back alley, and 2) Uranus' streaming light through a stand of trees on a dusty path.

Funny how our preferences often don't line up with that of the group! I thought for sure my labyrinth would have placed higher than the fog--it seemed so much more "pathy." Perhaps it was my "effort bias." To get the labyrinth photo, I had to hike two miles in the heat over rough terrain and peek over a scary precipice, whereas for the fog, I just jumped out of the car for a second. :-) Self-editing could probably be a topic for discussion in its own right.

  2011-09-04 09:55:47 PM
Thanks, oddmind :) I took that alley shot for the Pathways contest, but I really debated about whether I should enter it for Pathways or B/W. I have other frames I took, but I'm not sure I'd want to enter something so similar in back-to-back weeks. Might have to find another deserted alley!

Thanks. It's all goofy due to using a fish-eye lens.

So, are the fork tines drawn on the paper?

  2011-09-07 09:13:41 PM
No, the fork was hotglued to glass, turned upside down, lit from below, with the spoon on translucent sheets and lit not-as-brightly from above.

  2011-09-08 03:02:23 AM
Aha! I was thinking it was off camera with grazing incidence light passing through the tines and falling just in front of the spoon with another light above the scene to wash out the rest of the shadow. I think your way looks better than my idea would.

I had a couple ideas thrown at me regarding how it was done, but how I did it was the first (and thus last) method I'd though of. I was prepared to dig further if it didn't work, though. Your scenerio was one that was suggested, though.

No, I'm traveling, so maybe it's something to do with the hotel network or something like that, although it took my first set of votes ok. If I have trouble next week, I'll check with them though. Thanks Els!

Hi folks, I have an old Minolta Maxxum 450si SLR that is gathering dust in my closet and Mrs. Flab has handed me an ultimatum.

I notice that there's a pile of them on e-Bay... Should I even try selling it there? If so, the whole package, just the 35-70mm lens, just the manuals? Or is it a waste of time and I should just hand it over to a place that recycles electronic gadgets?

I guarantee you somebody in Farktography would pay at least for shipping for that thing. Might want to inquire over there.

One thing to try before giving up and giving away is Craigslist. Fewer hassles than Ebay. You're generally dealing local, you get money right away, and (unlike Ebay) there's likely to be far less competition.

If it's gathering dust, then figure out a fair price and ask about 50% more, with a "or best offer" at the end. Slowly come down every few days 'til it sells.

Call your local school district and see if any of the high schools teach photography. Contact the instructor. Offer to donate the camera, for use by a student who needs one.

That's my biggest problem... How do you price something that's a dead-end technology, made by a company that decided to stop being in that line of business? I know that Minolta lenses fit on newer Sony cameras, but still, it's a very standard lens, that's 15 years old... I'm not sure there's a big market for that!

ravnostic: Call your local school district and see if any of the high schools teach photography.

I can try that.

ravnostic, I noticed that too. The effect is more pronounced on my laptop than on my desk.

btw - they are clear glass marbles, arranged on a window screen (propped up on my desk and a light stand) with ambient light from my computer monitor and a small light underneath. Something like a 10 sec exposure (f/10ish for some depth of field). Then I shined a laser light on single marble for 1/2 - 3/4 of the exposure time.

Your ferris wheel rocks. I gotta find one of those next summer.

Again, with the good quality marbles (see contest thread). I gotta get me some of them. :o)

//the ferris? Well, it's a b-side to "State Fair", so I thought I'd throw it in and get a jump on the game. I have a dozen more just like it only without any interesting color or patterns in the wheel, whatsoever. I thought to myself, "Self, if you used it now, before it was cliche and overdone, it might be served better." Chalk one up to foresight, and one down to preparedness for "State Fair".

I'm going back, this weekend. So piffle. ;oD

I looked around, and the city of Mesa has a glass program with it's art department (Mesa is good that way...for now.) The whole 7 week beginning class is around $350 with supplies. Not in my discretionary funds at the moment. But they have a one day marble class that's $42 plus $15 in supplies, in November and on a Sunday following a non-Saturday schedule (I work nights, w-f and every other sat., till 6:30am). That might be the ticket.

Thanks for the search info--it narrowed me down to nearby Mesa, though I'd suggest their art department invest some of them funds into a better website. Sheesh--it was awful.

Your price in Mesa sounds about right. I had two 8-hour blocks of instruction, and it was about $325. The Marble Class sounds great, too! I might have taken that one first if it had been offered. 16 hours was a lot to jump into for a newbie. I haven't been back yet, but I might.

Looks like two ladies, one of whom is sporting a camera around her neck. It would be hard to be truly "off topic" in this forum. The community forums are typically chatty, sometimes on, sometimes off topic. In this case, the Fark Farktography forum is ostensibly primarily concerned with photos, photography, and Farktography. Since libranoelrose posted a photo, particularly one including a camera and featuring some wimmens that at least some proportion of Farkers would find attractive......well, you get the picture, eh? ;)

Wow, what a week! I spent a lot of time bouncing between 9th place and 11th, then dropped to 13th; heck, I'm just happy to have placed anywhere near the top at all :) Who knows where I'll be when this officially closes?

As usual, the pic I thought would do well tanked, and the one I thought would garner the least amount of votes got the best, which just goes to show that I have no idea what people actually like, and my tastes are very different from 'neurotypical' norms.

For gambitsgirl: oh how I wish you could have been #1 with something else. I can't imagine.

Just FYI, some upcoming Farktography themes:

11/2 "State Fair" (Photos of state and other fairs, difficulty: No country music acts/shows)

11/9 "Purely Film" (Photos taken exclusively with film)

11/16 "You Can't Fight City Hall" (Photos of government buildings)

11/23 "Triptych Portraits" (Three different photos of three different parts of the same subject combined into a horizontal or vertical triptych)

11/30 "Dungeons & Dragons" (Photos of anything related to dungeons, dragons, or D&D)

12/7 "Let's Go Shopping!" (Photos of store fronts, new or old, in business or not)

12/14 "Mandatory Procrastination" (Any subject, but can't be taken before 8pm Tues, Dec 13, 2011)

  2011-11-02 06:57:46 PM
I'll post something about this on the Farktohraphy site later to reach as many people as possible, but since i now know about this forum.... There's a Photoshop themed contest coming up where submitters are suppose to start with a photo they took and manipulate it digitally somehow. So it's essentially a no-holds barred version of the "Software Hootenanny" contest we've done twice now. So n case any of you would like to make over-the-top HDR treatments, post-processed multiple exposures, hyper-saturated photos, etc... that would be outside the rules of normal Farktography contests, then you might want to participate in contest #6694522..(POPS) I don't know if that link works for non-TF members though. If not check the "contests" page and scroll to the ones that go live on Mon 11/7 or just look for the one titled "Photoshop one of your own photographs". :)

YAY! I land in Hawaii about noon on Dec 13! Is it 8PM local or Farkistan time?

Which island? I'll be done with classes by then. If you're on Oahu, we should hang out.

Got it.

Also, you guys will notice a post in this week's Farktography thread about a Farktography Theme of the Year. If you have nominations for your favorite themes this year, email me.

No worries, the big island is cooler anyway. Many big telescopes and all that.

Mods: this has what do to with what?

The first thing that came to mind was a b-side for "That's No Moon..."
If that wasn't the intent, then it was probably just something libranoelrose wanted to share. Personally, I like it. It shows two young ladies having a laugh, fooling around on the beach. I wouldn't want to frame it and hang it on my wall ( or show my grandmother ), but its definitely not anything near pornographic or offensive to my eyes.

rav, the charts are being updated, but due to the default caching protocol, if you check the charts frequently you'll get a cached version instead of the latest generated image. It's on my todo list to tweak the caching parms so that this is automatic, but in the meantime, you can always get the latest charts by doing an F5 to refresh the screen after selecting the charts tab.

There doesn't seem to be a good place in Farktography.net, and I'm not feeling all Christmasy, so I'd like something or other to be shooting for.

plamadude30k asked for these photos, so I'm putting them here.

I don't remember exactly where we were--but I know it was on the Big Island, in Puna. You can see that we're near the ocean. I think it was around where Pahoa Kalapana Road meets Chain of Craters. If you really want to know, I can phone a friend. Straight out of the camera--and now I remember why I didn't post them. The best ones had too many signs of civilization for this week's topic. The lava flow wasn't very deep, as you can see by the concrete left behind, but it took out most of a housing development. People are coming back...I guess it's not likely that lava will strike twice.

So not true, predle--I especially liked that leafless barren tree of yours from this week :)

Congrats to Ranger Joe on the "Best" category win and to Linguine on the "Funniest" category win in this week's "Straight Out of Camera" theme!

Some upcoming themes:

1/25 "Stoned"--Photos where rocky things are prominent. Anything from sand to mountains.
2/1 "Go Out and Get Some Strange"--Intimate street photography of strangers (each entry must be of a different subject). Location doesn't necessarily have to be out on a street/sidewalk, could be other public places/accommodation as well.
2/8 "Apples vs Oranges 2: The Rematch"--Show us the battles between them.

Congrats to U-Man on the "Best" category win and to Jasihn for the "Funniest" category win on this week's "Stoned" theme!

mrlizard: Still kinda new to Farktography. When is the earliest a TotalFarker can submit images and where would I go to do so? I have read some of the stuff on Fark and otherwhere, but I am easily confused.

Who said that? Where am I? Gridlock! J/K welcome mrlizard! The contests get put up on TotalFark on Wednesday nights at "8pm Fark time" if I'm not mistaken. For me that works out to be 7pm Central. It shows up on the main Fark page four hours later, and that's when voting is turned on as well. You had some nice Arizona pics this week; someday I'm going to have to visit there to check out some of that amazing scenery in person.

And now, a rant against the "Funny" vote button. It has been in place for a few contests, and I'm not liking how people are using it. This week's "Stoned" theme had a few humorous entries, and they are certainly near the top of the Funny vote-getters; but there are a whole buttload of images that are clearly not funny, yet they have collected a significant number of funny votes for whatever reasons.

That kind of makes the funny totals pointless, no? I'm not sure of the reasoning behind changing the voting system, but what it seems to be doing now is punishing the entries that are funny AND exhibit so-called "good" photography. I for one do not think "Best" and "Funny" are mutually exclusive--under the old system, if a Farktography submission made me laugh, I would vote for it. Sometimes a funny photo would win the weeks contest, beating out the "serious" entries--and I had no problem with that (nor did anyone else that I know of).

With the new system, entries that show both humor and good photography are being punished because some will vote "Best", while others give it only a "Funny" vote. Some examples off the top of my head from this week: U-man's finger-balanced rockpile, Farktographer's cliffhanger, and fluffybunny's zombie jawbreaker. They all got some best and some funny votes. Under the old system, I feel these entries would have done better in the "overall" voting. With the new system, they end up doing mediocre in two categories.

To sum up, sometimes simpler is better. Please can we go back to the old voting system, huh can we Drew?

The fickle hand of the voter has bemused us all from time to time. I've entered what I considered 'throwaway' images in the past just to get my 3/3, only to find the two that i'd worked on for the contest bomb, whilst my 'throwaway' image shoots ten places above them. Go figure, huh?

Thanks. Elsinore, you the best!! :-)

some nice soul once wrote a little javescript that would show the numerical rank of contest finishers. for example you could have 10 votes be in 15th place.

damned change to voting broke it.

yeah i just found out when checking where i stood with wednesday's farktography. voting results and rankings may not matter to you or in the big scheme of things but i liked being able to see them.

hope that new voting crap is doing something for Fark cuz it sure ain't for me.

Curious, you should come around the forums a little more! That nice soul (thanks BTW) was me. I wasn't sure if anyone still used that javascript after I launched Bibliostats, but orionid ran into the same issue so I reworked it for the new layout. I can't post it here due to formatting issues, so see this forum post for the new version.

Oh, and you're by no means alone in your dislike for the new voting system. It's pretty unanimous.

Farktographers:

Based on your feedback/thoughts, we are looking into modifying the current voting system in the PS contests. So I can report back to the powers that be correctly, please indicate your preference for the voting system:

A. Keep as is with Best and Funniest (no changes)
B. Keep as is, but having voting tallies combined for both Best and Funniest
C. Go back to one button (Best)
D. Tweak the 2-button system in some other way (if you choose this, please provide suggestions)

You may post here or email me directly at my gmail which is FarktographerElsinore . This poll is also posted at farktography.net under the Pub and Grill forum.

  2012-03-06 08:01:35 PM
Just because I feel it warrants voting twice (as any quality democracy will let you do), I'll express my opinion here, too.

C. Go back to the one button.

and that is all.

  2012-03-06 08:43:37 PM
D. You can see my explanation of another option on the Farktography Forums, but if that isn't code-viable, C all the way.

  2012-03-06 08:54:54 PM
Thank you both :)

  2012-03-06 09:20:28 PM
I choose C. Perhaps we can develop a convention whereby entries considered humorous are commented as such, if a voter is so inspired. To me, that would mean more than a dry number.

  2012-03-07 12:07:22 AM
I also choose C. I also voted on Farktography.net for C. Not sure why exactly but it bugs the hells out of me to see a completely serious entry with a funny vote when it's my serious entry. Thank you for listening to us.

  2012-03-07 10:44:48 AM
I'll vote for c here too since Ive always been a fan of vote early vote often.

Definitely option C for me.

Elsinore, could you please vote-enable nwdad's first entry for legos (the moving train)? I had no lego stuff for this week, so I invited him from flickr as I knew he had some good shots. It's his first time, so I'm sure he just forgot ... I could mail him to ask you for himself, but I'm afraid he'll miss out on a good chunk of the voting by the time everybody replies.

I was confused as to what you were posting about in the thread. For the lighting, I figured it was sunlight filtering through a thinner section of hair, and coupled with the low res camera, I figured it was fine. The zooms of the same photo wouldn't be vote eligible since they're parts of the same entry. Admittedly, I only just achieved my daily caffeine requirement earlier, and my blood stream caffeine may not yet have reached therapeutic levels, so if I'm missing something ludicrously obvious, mea maxima culpa!

My apology for attributing orionid's photo to fluffybunny's posting on his behalf. I looked right at the entry and knew I needed to remember to list orionid, but I was in the middle of something and posting in a hurry.

Congrats to orionid on his "Best" category win and to lokisbong on his "Funniest" category win in this week's "Pinholes, Lomos & Holgas, Oh My!" theme!

It's borderline, but I think you're ok given it's depicting a boat. It's envotinated.

Yikes, no votes for my first entry yet? I didn't think it was that atrocious, but the voting public disagrees. Could I please get that deleted, Elsinore? Zeroes are such a drag on the ol' voting average--even (B)CISS can't make that stat look good :)

I'll delete if you want, but keep in mind that a lot of votes still roll in on Friday and Saturday. I almost never vote before Friday myself, because I want to make sure to grab late entries as well.

Nah, usually the late voters are very kind, and I appreciate it very much--but its only going to get pity votes at this point, I think :) Please erase it, TIA.

On the plus side, the Follands are back, woo hoo! olavf and just kat, I missed you two, welcome back!

=)

Still not a fan of having two kinds of voting options. My "Busted" pic only got 2 "best" but got 5 "funniest". I'm assuming it's only the "best" ones that are taken into consideration? (Which is fine with me)

They haven't forgotten, and they did get a lot of good feedback on it. Look for an announcement soon about how things will be handled.

Congrats to Ranger Joe on the "Best" category win and to fluffybunny on the "Funniest" category win in this week's "Watercraft" theme!

Here are some upcoming themes:

4/18: Sun in Frame: Photos that include the fully or partially visible sun. Difficulty: Reflections and sunbeams are not enough. While the sun can be partially obscured (as by clouds or trees or a subjects head) it has to be visible.

4/25: Off Kilter: Show us your slant on photography. Tilt that horizon! Tweak that Vertical! Dutch up your angles!

5/2: Wow! Nice Wood!: Any and everything about wood.

5/9: Rust Never Sleeps: Photograph something rusty. Difficulty: No persons named Rusty.

Congrats to U-Man on his "Best" category win and to I'm No Big Deal on his "Funniest" category win in this week's "Sun in Frame" theme!

Hello Farktographers! I am just popping in here to apologize for not visiting your threads more often. That off-kilter contest was magnificent. Thank you all for providing some great eye-candy.

Thanks for stopping by, DonWrite! That theme definitely delivered far beyond my expectations. Though I shouldn't be too surprised--Farktographers bring their A-game every week!

Hey folks, a head's up--the "funniest" category has been put out of your misery. Enjoy the return of the single "Vote" button!

Giveaway of the Day today is InPaint v.4.3 (should pop)

If you don't know, it's basically a good clone tool for simple photo-retouching. Comments seem to indicate good software. I d-loaded the last version, but never used it, due to my affinity for Photoshop.

As usual, I have no affiliation with either company, just passing on info. Read comments before installing to see if it's right for you.

  2012-05-17 08:30:18 AM
Heads up for this week's Scavenger Hunt theme--there are several images that dropped overnight for being too large. There was a bug discovered that was allowing images to initially post even if they were too large and would be deleted later. This has been fixed now (thanks, Mike!), but the images that have been dropped can't be restored because they're larger than the 256k Fark file size limit. They can be reposted if you want to repost smaller sizes. This specifically affects powerful katrinka (an image at 402k and an image of 266k), sleeping (an image at 273k), fluffybunny (an image at 273k), predle (an image at 297k which has been reposted smaller),Yugoboy (an image at 277k), and Mista Sparkle (an image at 332k and 800 pixels wide--Fark's limit is 640. It will physically resize, but the file size is still going to be an issue if you attempt to post large file images).

Every image that dropped was hosted at Flickr, which uses lossless or nearly lossless compression when generating its smaller sized images and thumbnails from the original files you upload. This was a change they made last year, and while it has improved image quality, it results in hugely bloated file sizes if you rely on Flickr to resize for you before posting on Fark. The easiest way to work around this is to upload a Fark sized original (640 pixels max width and 1100 pixels max height and 256k or smaller file size) to Flickr and use the "original" option from the share box on that Fark sized photo. The original is not resized/recompressed by Flickr, so you will know for sure it will work for Fark. If you want a larger-than-Fark-size version available, you can upload this separately to Flickr. When you post the Fark size version in-line for your entry, you're welcome to include a line at the bottom linking to the larger version. Hope this helps, and sorry for the folks who lost images over night!!

Oh wow, I hadn't seen a good number of those in that set. Some of the ones later in the list, I'd seen, but most I hadn't. Those photographs always amaze me.

Thank you Elsinore and ravnostic. Not sure how I managed the win... Must have been an influx of weather-weenies voting last week. Linguine's Organ Pipe and Ranger Joe's Teton shots are clearly superior. Oh, and ravnostic, your pic captures the oven-feel of this time of year perfectly. let's get that Monsoon started!

I didn't get to do the usual thread wrap up last night with the server move, so I'd like to take a moment and do that here. Since there were so many new and returning folks, I'm going to have to split it up into different posts--obviously this thread brought out the best in Farktography :)

I'd like to give a warm welcome to our Farktography First Timers Aeronut, beakgeek, larrycot, MandM, Moriel, saburai, spittman, and tgourley--it's always good to see new faces, and I hope you'll join us again next week!

  2012-07-01 10:36:48 AM
Also a warm welcome back to folks we hadn't seen in awhile: andyofne, Beer It's What's For Dinner, FutherMucker, Lenny_da_Hog, mkrieger, olddancingmonkey, Scentless_Apprentice, and wakitu--hope to see all of you back next week! Same bat time, same bat channel ;)

  2012-07-01 10:40:10 AM
And of course well done to our "Birds 2: Boidwatching" top finishers wakitu, No Such User, and bob_ross, and congrats to thread winner IncorrigibleKitty!

This was a beautiful thread, folks! See everyone next week for "Tiny...Tracts of Land"!

Apparently I had typed up last week's congratulations, but didn't actually hit enter (it's been a long couple of weeks) Last week was another two-way tie for the tally sheet--congrats to kestrana and CompoundWarp on this week's "Old, New, Borrowed, & Blue" win.

This week kestrana alone stands victorious--congrats on the "Chains, Wires, Cables, & Ropes" win!

I just came here to ask the same thing, Barracuda Noticed it last night. At work. Also to mention I didn't get a chance to participate this week (life gets in the way), but I did take the time to do some voting last night.

Thanks for the update Elsinore. Been there, had that happen with my own sites, hate it when it's out of your hands and just waiting for the hosting provider to get around to getting things fixed and running again.

Any word on how long this outage is going to be?

I'm beginning to twitch a little (but only when it's really quiet around here...)

  2012-08-24 11:26:58 PM
I'm not sure.  I figured it would be back up by now ...I don't think it can be much longer.

  2012-08-25 12:52:32 AM
Good. I hit a garage sale today and wanna do a little bragging, as well as some questions about some of the acquisitions.

I also have a Canon 50mm lens that I don't need.

Still down as of about 5 seconds ago. :-(

Next week's theme is photos with a vanishing point perspective, forget the exact title, but that's the description. (95% sure on that...)

Elisnore, I thought I'd bring this off of the main page. Here is the original, fresh off the .NEF. About 4 miles of San Francisco Bay lies between the weeds and the bridge, and though it wasn't foggy, it was a really hazy day. It made everything grey except the foreground, which was only about 25 feet away. I almost trashed the image when I first saw it.

farm9.staticflickr.com

I DID do post processing on it in Lightroom, but I think I followed the guidelines because everything I did was applied to the entire image, other than the removal of one bit of sensor dust. But maybe I misunderstand. I adjusted exposure, sharpened, removed some noise, upped the black levels, and did a blue luminance shift, all across the image evenly. Was any of that not allowed?I want to be "clean," so I'll go along with whatever you say, and I do appreciate you monitoring us all to ensure fairness. It can't be easy!

  2012-09-06 12:59:48 AM
Oops. Misspelled your name, Elsinore. sorry 'bout that.

  2012-09-06 07:55:41 AM

oddmind: Oops. Misspelled your name, Elsinore. sorry 'bout that.

Ack, sorry I missed this last night!  If the adjustments were global, then yes, typically that's fair game.  (Fixing sensor dust is always an allowable spot treatment, btw).  I think where I'm on the fence is the section in the rules about using legal tools in a way that results in something that doens't look realistic (there's something in the rules by way of example of cranking up the contrast until the image looks cartoonish--legal tool, but not legal results). The effect of the fog and the increased contrast/sharpening, blue luminance, and black levels yield a result that is toeing that line.  But seeing the original image, I can see an argument for the fact that your adjustments really only enhance the monochrome effect that was already there for the buildings in the distance.

Since I'm torn on that point, I'll leave it up to you--feel free to email me directly at farktographerelsinore (at) the Google mails and let me know what you'd prefer.  I'll be in and out today, but can check that email and the thread remotely.
