Barracuda: Elsinore, looks like Google's fantastic picasa hosting has once again dropped my images temporarily or something and one of the mods deleted two of my entries. Could you kindly check if the images are still broken and undelete the posts if they are fixed? Thank you.

Got 'em!

I'm just back from a short vacation where I had limited net access so I didn't check the board before it went down. Would somebody please tell me what is next week's theme?

It's Gone, Daddy, Gone: Take a photo with vanishing point perspective.

Any word on how long this outage is going to be?

I'm beginning to twitch a little (but only when it's really quiet around here...)

  2012-08-24 11:26:58 PM
I'm not sure.  I figured it would be back up by now ...I don't think it can be much longer.

Good. I hit a garage sale today and wanna do a little bragging, as well as some questions about some of the acquisitions.

I also have a Canon 50mm lens that I don't need.

  2012-08-25 09:07:20 AM
Still down as of about 5 seconds ago. :-(

Next week's theme is photos with a vanishing point perspective, forget the exact title, but that's the description. (95% sure on that...)

Thanks, Elsinore! I'm pretty shocked by this result, but it's good motivation to come back! I've got nothing for this week, but I am making a conscious effort to take, edit, and share more photos.

/also, when the hell did we get a fark discussion thread all to ourselves?!?!

About a year ago--see what happens when you go off and get a real life?? ;)

Elisnore, I thought I'd bring this off of the main page. Here is the original, fresh off the .NEF. About 4 miles of San Francisco Bay lies between the weeds and the bridge, and though it wasn't foggy, it was a really hazy day. It made everything grey except the foreground, which was only about 25 feet away. I almost trashed the image when I first saw it.

farm9.staticflickr.com

I DID do post processing on it in Lightroom, but I think I followed the guidelines because everything I did was applied to the entire image, other than the removal of one bit of sensor dust. But maybe I misunderstand. I adjusted exposure, sharpened, removed some noise, upped the black levels, and did a blue luminance shift, all across the image evenly. Was any of that not allowed?I want to be "clean," so I'll go along with whatever you say, and I do appreciate you monitoring us all to ensure fairness. It can't be easy!

Oops. Misspelled your name, Elsinore. sorry 'bout that.

oddmind: Oops. Misspelled your name, Elsinore. sorry 'bout that.

Ack, sorry I missed this last night!  If the adjustments were global, then yes, typically that's fair game.  (Fixing sensor dust is always an allowable spot treatment, btw).  I think where I'm on the fence is the section in the rules about using legal tools in a way that results in something that doens't look realistic (there's something in the rules by way of example of cranking up the contrast until the image looks cartoonish--legal tool, but not legal results). The effect of the fog and the increased contrast/sharpening, blue luminance, and black levels yield a result that is toeing that line.  But seeing the original image, I can see an argument for the fact that your adjustments really only enhance the monochrome effect that was already there for the buildings in the distance.

Since I'm torn on that point, I'll leave it up to you--feel free to email me directly at farktographerelsinore (at) the Google mails and let me know what you'd prefer.  I'll be in and out today, but can check that email and the thread remotely.

Yep, I put some counter measures in place, but to no avail.

Hooray! An upgrade!

  2012-11-19 11:31:30 PM
I know carcasses, cadavers and other deceased bodies are verboten...

What about a skeleton?

I'm trying to get some future contests ready, and under the heading of "Here at the End of All Things" I want to use one of the photos of a post-winter skeletonized deer I found. I'm planning on making it B&W, and there's some residual hair. It's not "gross" and I really think it conveys the theme nicely...

Also, somewhere else in the archives is a deer(?) skull I found last spring. That one is clean and white... way more clinical. I took a lot more of that one... just gotta find it... huh..., I just now remembered that one...

Anyway... what about it?

^ditto!

The way you describe them, they should be ok. The one with hair might be more borderline, but especially in black and white, it probably wouldn't read as "gross".

You're welcome guys :) I'm just sorry there's a disruption at all.  But it'll be nice to upgrade and make things shiny and new again.

I'm not orionid, but I don't think so.  It says, "Take a photo of any natural or urban landscape in portrait (vertical) orientation" which says to me it's simply a vertically oriented image of a natural or urban landscape scene.

Speaking of themes, for those who haven't seen the list recently, here's what's coming up:

November 21, 2012-Theme 394 "History Happened Here": Shots of historical sites, markers, re-enactors, or artifacts. Suggested by Yugoboy

November 28, 2012-Theme 395 "Vertical Landscapes": Take a photo of any natural or urban landscape in portrait (vertical) orientation. Suggested by orionid

December 5, 2012-Theme 396 "Statuary": From public art to museum quality pieces, show us statues of every kind!. Suggested by Kestrana

December 12, 2012-Theme 397 "Here at the End of All Things": Some people believe that the Mayan calendar indicates the world will end December 21, 2012. Just in case they're right, show us photographs indicating destruction, loss of hope, human frailty, fear, or peoples' response to the prediction of the end of time. Suggested by Farktographer.

Need some feedback on the processing of these two if I've gone too far. Getting the hang of using Silver Efex Pro (currently using demo to determine if I want to spend the $$$). It seems content on adding a fair bit of grain into the photos that may not be Farktography kosher. Just haven't been able to reproduce the same look without the grain in either Silver Efex or Lightroom yet.

Remember the Alamo
Alcatraz

The grain might be something to do with how it's pushing exposure, but it looks Farktography kosher to me.

I think it's fine, Barracuda, for whatever that's worth.

Quick question on Vertical Landscapes; is this intended to be stitched panos, or single shots simply with vertical orientation?

I answered here that I thought it was meant to be single shots with a vertical orientation.

Doh! How did I miss that! I've been shooting the past couple days for this one, wasn't sure which way I was to go; thanks!
