From the report, verbatim: Suspect was hatless. Repeat: hatless.

A few months ago city cops had to arrest a Massachusetts state trooper because he was drunk in a state car. He was leaving the scene of a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend and was not capable of driving safely. They left the DUI part out of the arrest report to avoid hurting his record. A police chief did get a DUI last fall. He crashed the town's new police car on federal land and a park ranger remained at the scene to make sure local cops arrested him.

It's a shame just 98 out of 100 cops have to spoil it for the rest of them.

He got arrested, though. Booked and even got to spend time in a jail jumpsuit. Which I translate to mean he was drunk off his ass and probably did major property damage.

Anyway, that's just the police report. I'd want to see the booking statement and the troopers' depositions before I go yelling COVERUP!!!! Could just be a lazy arresting officer doing his major a favor.

Deep cover.

I know really nothing about the arrest or the statement, barring what was said in the article, but the ridiculously defensive Weeners on that site made me think the guy must be guilty as hell of that and a dozen other charges.

So was he naked and screaming obscenities, or just passed out behind the wheel?

We had a similar incident here in Iowa, where a county sheriff was arrested by a state trooper for DUI. It caused quite a bit of controversy when the county attourney (sic?, I don't have spellcheck) dropped the charges. Apparently he refused to resign and intends to run for office again. We'll see if he keeps his job after the next election.

Not quite sure the blue line is upheld much when the cop still got arrested.

CSS:

My MIL was in an accident a few years ago when an unlicensed driver of a commercial truck came into her lane and pushed her car into the center median on the freeway. Totaled her car, but luckily she didn't end up with major injuries. The responding CHP officer made a complete mess of the report, failed to record contact info for multiple witnesses, and failed to cite the truck driver for operating his vehicle without a commercial license. The truck driver later claimed she came into his lane, and without the contact info of the witnesses who all stated at the scene he was at fault, my MIL ended up getting screwed on compensation for her car and medical expenses.

Oh, and she's worked for the local PD for over 30 years. State troopers don't give a shiat about other agencies.

Because of the limited space available for police records, the report was overwritten later that evening with the words "Popcorn burnt in break room." A permanent transfer of the arresting officer's record had not been made at that time, and in a statement this morning the Press Liaison refered to the events during the three-hour arrest as a "known unknown." Police will interview alcoholic beverages for any insight into what might have happened.

*sigh*

Which part of this even remotely suggests I am defending them? A lazy arresting officer doing his major a favor if the major STILL got arrested and STILL goes to jail is not illegal, and since we know about it, which part got "covered up"?

Or is the fact I didn't just leap on the cop-hate bandwagon immediately just presumptively evidence that I am defending someone of something which...didn't...happen?

That's pretty much how it goes. If you are above the law, enjoy it. If you are below the line, you'd better walk the straight and narrow.

Rich/Famous/Police go ahead, drink and drive. It's *cool*.
Poor Mexican? Don't even think about it. We'll destroy your life over it.

Fark_Guy_Rob: Regular Folk

I guess I fall into that category and I got a DUI for sitting in my car in a parking lot with my keys in the glove compartment. I should have spent the three months in Police Academy. It looks so much fun based on the movies.

fark the police, the dirty, rotten, filthy, stinking, nasty coonts that they are. I hope every cop with a child gets to see said child with incurable, painful cancer. Then they get painful cancer themselves. And live to be 90.

Dude, it's you're turn to hit this..

I would think that once the officer refused the DUI field sobriety test, all other concerns would be moot.

Since he's no longer a law enforcement officer at this point.

Doesn't take much brain to read "Subject arrested for DUI refusal" reads "subject quit his job" in this case.

My best friends dad was a fraud detective. When we were 15 my best friend's older brother died tragically. I've seen what this does to a family. I don't know how difficult your life is, but I've got a good amount of evidence from your statement even your grandmother was raised wrong.

Not too long ago, our local police chief was pulled over by one of the town cops for DUI. As soon as the cop realized who he had, he immediately radioed for a State trooper to deal with the situation. I thought this was pretty much standard protocol in every state.

The police chief ended up resigning in shame and the cop that pulled him over...? Got promoted to police chief lol.

I hope the officer kept a copy of his original report, because it sounds like it was edited.

The chief probably lost his career for driving at .08. It sucks but they have to treat everyone the same.

Depends on local politics. An officer in my city kept his job after a DUI conviction. He must have been on non-driving duty for the 6 weeks he had to lose his license. The chief I mentioned earlier resigned. He'll get the standard deal for a first offense, probation in lieu of conviction, and will be able to apply for a job elsewhere with no criminal record. It remains to be seen if anybody will hire him.

Massachusetts? Yeah, historically they don't really see DUIs as that big a deal.

6 weeks? Jesus.
