Having worked for RAC before and having been the collections manager, this is not even remotely the dumbest thing I have seen.

I had a customer rent a big screen TV and entertainment system and as soon as we left after delivering it, they set their mobile home on fire. They guessed that they could collect insurance on it from us since they paid the $1 insurance on the rentals. When we refused to pay them money for OUR property they called the police to report us. Upon further investigation they found that the fire was caused by arson.

What I cannot figure out is how she thought she was making money on the deal. Paying out $2,800 over a couple years so that she could get $300 in cash right now?

It probably would have been better to go to a pay-day loan place and pay their 250% interest.

Did you see the mug shot? Do you honestly think she ever intended to pay anything at all to RAC? That money was going straight to meth.

In MO, it's not theft until she fails to pay RAC her monthly pmts or refuses to return the items upon demand. It is a civil case, RAC sues the person for the value - no theft actually occurs. Nope, not even 'theft by conversion' (a real crime of stealing/borrowing someone's stuff and pawning it).

God that's SO stupid-First you get a store credit card and THEN you start your "buy to pawn" crime spree. That sets you up with at LEAST two weeks of run time.

I worked with Randy for quite a while during his spree and he racked up about 45k worth of stupid before he declared bankruptcy. He was looking at scot free until the judge detected a hint of fraudulence.
Thanks for the article, hadn't laughed about how stupid he was in quite a long time.

After four years of being a loyal customer of Rent-A-Center I have felt that their customer's needs are not a priority. In the last month I was being harassed 6-9 times a day with matters concerning a payment in which was not even past due. Nevertheless, I was also deceived in the original price presented to me. In satisfaction, I would like acknowledgement from Rent-A-Center regarding my complaint and actions made towards them.

Lawyer here, and I'm having trouble seeing how this is a crime. Maybe, just maybe, if RAC retains ownership of the property until it's paid off, but even then I don't see how she'd be committing a crime until she missed a payment. Even if RAC retains ownership this should be treated similarly to a lease, and that means she can do whatever she wants with the property as long as the RAC payments are made.

Maybe the "victim" is the pawn shop, because she sold them property that she doesn't own?

"a Toshiba Tablet and a Sony Desktop computer worth $2800.00 from Rent-A-Center"
It's worth $2800 to RAC.

TheGreatGazoo: Because that's the only way you can get a laptop and desktop that are actually worth $2800.

Step 1 of 'rent to own' places: have a price on the system that's double to triple that of an equivalent item at walmart. I STILL wish I'd kept the insert that had both walmart and RAC ads - you could buy the Walmart TV(same size and features) outright for 3 of 36 RAC payments.

StrangeQ: Did you see the mug shot? Do you honestly think she ever intended to pay anything at all to RAC? That money was going straight to meth.

I was thinking the exact same thing the moment I saw the mug shot. Evidence is the sores that match what methheads get, and the dumbness that methheads also do.

She put her real address down! She never intented to pay, and if she thought of anything, she'd have claimed it stolen(later), or just planned on saying she's broke(also probably true).

Misconduc: My town never seems to amaze me, she looks a little to fat for meth, but I am unsure really.

Probably a real tubby before she got into the meth. She looks like a six-monther. Give her another six months of the stuff...

Warrior Monk: Maybe, just maybe, if RAC retains ownership of the property until it's paid off, but even then I don't see how she'd be committing a crime until she missed a payment. Even if RAC retains ownership this should be treated similarly to a lease, and that means she can do whatever she wants with the property as long as the RAC payments are made.

Not a Lawyer, but I think it depends on whether she pawned it(I'll be back in 3 weeks with $450 to get my computers back) or actually sold it. Still, consider car loans - RAC 'loans' are secured by the property RAC provides. Just like a car, you have to pay off the loan if you wreck it or want to transfer title.

As such, I figure that it's a crime against the pawn shop because she sold/pawned an item she didn't have clear title on. It's a crime against RAC because she violated the lien standards, and that stuff is basic enough that they've made violating it criminal.

NYTmare - A lease is different in that the company aways keeps title to the car; you're just renting it. Still, it amounts to the same thing.

With RAC, you're 'rent to own', so it's more like buying a car at a 'buy here pay here' place. Theoretically you COULD sell it and just keep making payments. But when the contract is worded that RAC keeps ownership until the last payment, or that the loan is secured by the vehicle(and you're not allowed to dispose of/wreck it until the last payment is done), you have to abide by those terms.

2012-03-16 03:47:38 PM
In my younger, poorer days, I rented a washer and dryer from RAC. I paid them off and used them for years. Yes, I greatly overpaid for them, but no issue other than that.

Once the washer died, I replaced it with a used one I bought with cash.

I don't know about he desktop, but from shopping for a notebook for a few months at the end of last year, it's almost impossible to get one with a good display and stay below four digits (and I'm talking € not $).
Looking at dell.de, their Alienware prices seem to end around the point where the prices for the Precision series start.

Funny shiat.

Okay, maybe the RAC guys in those letters are dicks, but at the same time, but at the same time, I've got the feeling that for every innocent person who legitimately just missed a single payment by 30 minutes there are dozens of people who lie, cheat, steal and game the system for all it's worth.

I don't understand how someone can justify paying $25 a week for 24 months for a computer. Take that money and stash it in your sock drawer for six months and you OWN the computer with no headaches.

Don't rent from RAC ever! I rented a gaming system thinking it would be a little cheaper. Not! You pay three times the amount and someone will scam you and tell you one thing and charge you another. What a misconception! No wonder I got so much beautiful booty while you guys got none. They aren't skanks, just from a lower caste. They see you with a car that isn't ten colors and it's game on.
