A sex scandal in the yoga community? There's no way this discussion will lead to another yoga pants thread, because, let's face it, people have grown weary of yoga pants threads. Just saying.

Please continue your thoughtful discussion of the challenges that face the yoga industry in coping with this article's accusations...

so you are telling me, a rich, in-shape man, had sex, with other in-shape women?

How did this ever happen

2012-03-16 06:23:04 AM
If this happened in Europe "Meh, whatever, read about it in the Sun in a few days", in the US "OMG how could he, what about the yoga?".

Anusara?

I generally prefer the gymnast type to the yoga type, when I'm thinking about girls who can put their feet behind their head.

I'm failing to see the issue here. Okay they were married women, so what? They were all adults capable of making choices.

And hot women in yoga pants are hot.

I love how it says yoga is 5000 years old and american business loused it up. Funny thing is, yoga has only been around since about 1960, and made the inventor very wealthy. That's like the ancient american tradition of pilates.

This thread could be interesting.

Generally speaking, I have never been to a yoga class even though I'm interested in doing it simply because everyone there would think it's just to pick up women. All the dudes who I have seen go to them are there to do just that and it's pretty pathetic. I wish there was some sort of a middle ground.

OK, I like yoga
I see the benefits of yoga
And I enjoy yoga class.
And I've seen many men get a good work out in them.

Now, that being said,
any man with any libido whatsoever will enjoy what he sees in class.
Many women.
Dressed in stretched clothing
Bending slowly in various exaggerated positions.

And with that being said,
many men, who work in the same industry,
may take advantage of the many women who are interested in him too.
(hmm...teacher, doing same posed, decent income, likely charismatic, probably decent looking)

I think we call these rockstars
I think we call them groupies.

I think I've seen this before...everyone involved is guilty, all sides.
Sex,
one person gets what they want...the other person gets what they want.
(more or less...quality & quantity may vary)

/no ethics necessary...but prefered.

Really? At the heart of it, physically, just what is yoga? I mean, it's not a cardio workout, nor is it strength training. Setting aside the alleged mental and spiritual benefits, just what is it? Seems to me (again, setting aside any non-athletic benefits, real or imagined) that at its heart it's just a way to maintain or increase flexibility. In other words, stretching.

Depending on how you do yoga, it can be done for strength training, much in the same vein as push-ups, sit-ups, and lunges, and a mild cardio work out, more akin to an aerobics class or dancing. Add in to that another major component in yoga is to develop balance. So, while yoga may consist of stretches, it's actually a fairly well-rounded work out as long as you have the right teacher.

Actually, this is true.
I've seen many big guys, athletes even, sweat their asses off.
The muscles are worked out in ways they never even thought of.

Even muscles they haven't even used before in their own sport training are hit. (and they are weak on)

I do weight training, biking, swimming, football and martial arts.
And I still get "messed up" after yoga. (not hurt, but you're definitely feeling those muscles after)

It is NOT just stretching.

No. The yoga of posing and stretching and stuff has been around for 500 years. It just wasn't all that popular even in the east until the late 19th century at least, and didn't explode in popularity in the west until the 60s. But no one here 'invented' yoga. They invented a business model.

True that the ancient tradition is mostly just sitting there meditating, but even that's still "yoga".

Also nothing in the article even implies that american business "loused it up".

I would say it is a very mild strength workout.

With push-ups and lunges you are doing high reps where most the stuff for yoga is just holding. I don't think that builds strenght as much as endurance.

The eye of this yoga storm swirls around John Friend, a charismatic entrepreneur who earned a finance degree then went into the yoga field - a juxtaposition of the usual path: a yogi who goes into business. Friend founded Anusara yoga in 1997 - and ultimately Anusara Inc. - draping his version on a "life-affirming" Tantric ideology "of intrinsic goodness," selling a "celebration of the heart that looks for the good in all people and all things," according to his former company's website. As the primary investor in Anusara, Friend prospered while his venture boomed and he charmed yoga conference audiences around the nation. In 15 years, his enterprise licensed 1,000 Anusara teachers and gained more than a half million followers in 70 countries.

Keyword highlighted.

Whats the difference between yoga and stretching?

I am given to understand that whatever it was, it is rocking the yoga industry.

Founder of the school bonking married subordinates. (Presumably they were married to persons other than he).

Not very scandalous IMO. I guess the scandal factor involves speculation that the whole thing was just a sex cult or something.
