Men kill themselves with guns, women with pills. That's the tradition. Guns are better. Men are six times more likely to commit suicide successfully. Guns don't give you time to decide that you would sooner live the way that a dose of sleeping pills (or Flintstone vitamins) do.

That's why I say that guns DO kill people. Most firearm deaths are suicides and accidents. Murders are rather rare, and most of them are crimes of passion (drugs and alcohol being frequently involved). The kind of murder that you can protect yourself against with guns is quite rare. The kind of death that "protecting yourself" with guns makes a morbid joke, is very much more common.

Guns are security--they are not safety. There's a big difference between the two. Security is a lock, safety is making sure that the thief doesn't show up and steal your locks. People who own bicycles know what I mean. How many times have you returned to your bike to find your lock still there, and still locked but your bike gone?

In fact, bicycle crime may be one of the reasons why liberals and greens and such like bicycle lovers are more likely to be liberals than conservatives. They've seen a practical demonstration of the difference between "security blanket" and "real safety", between guns and crime prevention, between war and peaceful negotiation (all that "useless" diplomatic and political talk that conservatives hate so much).

If you are suicidal, get a gun. If a burgler doesn't shot you, maybe your spouse, your children or the dog will. If nobody steps up to do the job, you can do it yourself. Sadly, guns do not have escape mechanisms built into them. There is no back door to sneak out of should you decide you would sooner live than shoot your problems away.
