Louis the Unlucky: themeaningoflifeisnot: Flint Ironstag: themeaningoflifeisnot: I love how inflamed people get about others who like a particular product. I've never understood why I should be bothered that someone else likes an Android phone or tablet more than an Apple product, and vice versus.

Seriously, why can't people let other people enjoy their choices without feeling the need to shiat on them? It's so juvenile to even care that someone else doesn't share your interest in a particular OS.

Point is, if you are queuing up to get a product at midnight on launch day then you do not "like it". You haven't seen one in the flesh yet, let alone actually tried it. How do you know you are going to like it? Or that it will be better than a competitors model? You are buying it to impress your friends.

First, I pre-ordered, so I'm not standing in line. I've purchased Apple products in the past, and I've been happy with them. I would pre-order the Asus Transformer Infinity if it was available right now because I have been satisfied with Asus products in the past.

Second, buying a tablet is not a very complex process. Would I buy a car without driving it first? Of course not. I'm not about to drop $35k on a vehicle without driving it. Do I actually have to test drive the new ipad when its form factor differs little from the ipad 2 and I can easily understand the specs relating to the changes in the new ipad? Absolutely not.

Finally, I'm sure many people are buying the new ipad to impress others. Just like most of the new Harley owners. And the new Mercedes owners. And the Nike shoe afficiondado who frantically orders the latest pair of Jordans when the Nike Store puts them on sale at midnight for $200. And the amateur chef who spends $6k on a stove. And my audiophile nut friends who drop $5k on a turntable.

Why should I care one whit about what motivates someone else to make a purchase? And if someone insists on trying to rub my face in one of their luxury purchases, th ...

Which explains why Android owners regularly complain about not being able to upgrade to the latest Ice Cream Sundae or Haagen DOS or Milky Surprise or whatever.

What? My phone works. When they release a new OS version that doesn't mean the old one suddenly stops working. I have no idea what version my phone is running. How does that alter the fact that it worked out of the box?

What exactly am I losing out on by not having the latest OS?

OS fragmentation is the downside of having a huge range of new phone models and makes to chose from. The benefit far outweighs the downside. At least Android don't deliberately disable apps on customers phones because they bought the company and want to bundle that app onto their latest phone, forcing customers to buy a new phone if they want that app. Like Apple did with Siri.

Playing with my wife's Nexus (Ice Cream Sandwich) and my Galaxy SII (whatever the "old" OS is called) and I'm hard pressed to see any difference.

Flint Ironstag: Man On Pink Corner: JackieRabbit: There's always a couple of annoying problem with version 1

To be fair to Apple, that hasn't been the case since the iPhone 3G/3Gs models. The original iPhone had some fairly serious issues, but they got their shiat together after that.

It feels weird to buy something that actually works properly the minute you take it out of the box, but you get used to it.

So did mine. I tinkered with it because I want to; the stock rom was actually pretty nice.

My Samsung 105 cost me $9.88 at Wal-Mart, and a card for 120 minutes was $19.95. Counting taxes I was out the door at $33.00 and change, quite decent I would say.

As far as these "superphones" that will do everything from pick your nose to fill out a 1040 long form, I am not much sold on them. The last four calls I made to someone carrying one did not go through, and the only time I ever saw they were useful was when the coffee shop was full of Yuppies gathered for a track meet, and a solid wall of black clouds loomed on the horizon.

"Hey dude," I asked, "Can you get radar on that thing? I'm on a motorcycle and I don't like the looks of that sky."

Sure as hell, he flashed his weather radar app, and showed a solid wall of green across the display, with red and orange centers. It was headed right our way, we were going to get drenched.

"Appreciate it," I replied. "I'm outta here!"

I made it home before the rain hit, lucky stroke.

But those phones cost $400+ to buy and there's a minimum 2-year contract; you are looking at $2000+ to carry that cute little toy; $3000 more likely.

\\\ Not worth it.

I figure about $1000, including phone and 2-year contract. (Galaxy SII)
No need for a TV or cable. A great ebook platform, GPS, Newspapers, Free phone calls, Camera, games, music, planetarium....and yes...weather radar for when I'm riding my motorcycle.

Worth it? Hell farking yeah.

Anytime Apple launches a new product, the lines at the stores here get crazy long. For example, when the latest iPhone came out, there was a line two blocks long for the Apple Store at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

$400 and a two year contract? My HTC Desire, or now the latest Desire S, is free with a £26 a month contract including 200 minutes talk, unlimited texts and 750MB internet*. That's under $1000 including taxes for the two years. That gets you a full GPS maps and navigation, internet, email, weather, apps to find the nearest gas station, Starbucks, McDonalds, ATM etc, Google maps show all bus stops near to wherever I am and if I click on one it lists all the bus services that run from that stop and the times of the next few departures.
I can look up TV listings and press one button to send a signal to my Sky+ recorder at home to record that programme, or just watch the show there and then on the phone. Check my bank account, place bids on ebay if an auction happens to end while I am out somewhere, zap the barcode of anything in a store and find out what other shops sell that item and how much for, watch movies, read ebooks including Kindle, play MP3s and it is a decent camera and HD video recorder. The only app I have ever paid for is the full version of pannous Voice Actions, the Android version of Siri (that came out six months before Apple launched Siri on the 4S) and that cost me $3.
And yes, I do have an app that works out payroll tax...

I have also never dropped a call, though the network here may well be better thanks to the smaller area it has to cover.

*HTC Desire S on Orange UK, Panther 26 package pay monthly 24 month contract.

Bullseyed: Uh.. no. Actually all the carriers lose money on Apple products because they pay the subsidy.

Yes, they lose money on every iPhone, but make it up on volume! Uhhh... no.

When a carrier charges $69.95 a month, for a 24-month contract, they take in $1679.04. I'd say the subsidy is more than taken care of.

iPhone 4GS. $135 after rebate. $95 a month includes long distance to anywhere in North America, free international texting, 500 megs of data that I've never come close to using cuz there's so much wifi in the world.

Yes, I did have to sign a 3 year contract. BFD. I need a phone. I'm going to pay someone whether or not I'm contractually obliged to do so or I'm just paying month by month.

$3000 would be over two years worth of service.

People actually buy Mercedes new instead of buying a 9-12 month old one for half price?

My mom has one on MetroPCS. Cost her about $100 bucks and no contract. It's not a very powerful one, but it handles her needs.

Oh, also, the most powerful ones only cost $400+ if you buy them off-contract. If you buy them on, the regular price is about $200, and you can frequently find them on sale for $0. You still have the contract, but... well, I'd be paying for service anyway.

I've got a powerful one for your mom, for less than 100 bucks, that'll handle her needs.

Kind of OT...are there ports available for PC? I used to play GO KGS, but I'd love to hit up a Risk, Stratego, or Monopoly game online.

There are tons of "unofficial" ports as well as vassal mods.

Is having to queue up starting the night before for a new electronics gadget a first-world problem? Or just a first-world version of a third-world problem?
