Republicans say the measure, under the cloak of battered women, unnecessarily expands immigration avenues by creating new definitions for immigrant victims to claim battery. More important, they say, it fails to put in safeguards to ensure that domestic violence grants are being well spent. It also dilutes the focus on domestic violence by expanding protections to new groups, like same-sex couples, they say.

The GOP is ok with women getting tortured or murdered, as long as some gay and brown people are getting tortured and murdered as well.

Is this a trick question? Will I click on the link expecting to find the answer to be "Republicans, naturally" only to find that it's backwards day and every single Democratic representative voted no?

2012-03-15 12:02:42 PM
Well, NOW it's starting to look a lot like a war on women.

2012-03-15 12:03:28 PM
Well if women would just shut up, get off the pill, and go back into the kitchen there wouldn't be any violence against women.

2012-03-15 12:05:02 PM
Women, even though the GOP is really taking a dump on you right now, you should stay with them. Just remember the good times.

2012-03-15 12:05:30 PM
But it isn't a war on women.

As suggested by Mr. Sessions, Republicans detect a whiff of politics in the Democrats' timing.

This is pure politics right here. The Democrats are saying "I don't like domestic violence", and the poor defenseless GOP has not CHOICE but to admit that they don't give a fark about battered wives.

That is just so UNFAIR of the Democrats.

2012-03-15 12:12:11 PM
"You think that's possible? You think they might have put things in there we couldn't support that maybe then they could accuse you of not being supportive of fighting violence against women?"

Sort of like putting in random crap to military appropriations bills, and then accusing those who won't vote for it of not supporting the troops?

what_now: This is pure politics right here. The Democrats are saying "I don't like domestic violence", and the poor defenseless GOP has not CHOICE but to admit that they don't give a fark about battered wives.

Look toots, It's like this. Republicans like me don't care about gays, abortions, atheists, minorities, or uppity women. This is America and it's a free country, you can be who you want to be. We just don't want to have to live in a country where those kinds of people are allowed to show themselves in public that's all.

2012-03-15 12:15:25 PM
"Wahhhhhhhhh, the democrats are making us vote against a bill we've passed with large bipartisan margins in the past!!!"

Do these people realize how ridiculous they sound?

2012-03-15 12:16:50 PM
Instead of laws and programs to prevent domestic violence and help victims of domestic violence, they should just think back to all the good times.

Long answer: noooooooooooooo.

Bloody William: Instead of laws and programs to prevent domestic violence and help victims of domestic violence, they should just think back to all the good times.

Yeah, just remember all the times I didn't hit you. There's a solid 23 hours a day where I'm not smacking you around. That counts for something, right?

"I favor the Violence Against Women Act and have supported it at various points over the years, but there are matters put on that bill that almost seem to invite opposition," said Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama, who opposed the latest version last month in the Judiciary Committee. "You think that's possible? You think they might have put things in there we couldn't support that maybe then they could accuse you of not being supportive of fighting violence against women?"

OK, so you don't like those 'unnecessary' riders. let's take a look at those additions, shall we?

The legislation would continue existing grant programs to local law enforcement and battered women shelters, but would expand efforts to reach Indian tribes and rural areas. It would increase the availability of free legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, extend the definition of violence against women to include stalking, and provide training for civil and criminal court personnel to deal with families with a history of violence. It would also allow more battered illegal immigrants to claim temporary visas, and would include same-sex couples in programs for domestic violence.

Pray tell, what of those things do you have an issue with?

How has this become a genuine war on women over just a few weeks?

It feels like I blinked and Republicans went utterly misogynistically insane, abandoning any sense of reason or even political strategy in favor of throwing out as many anti-women laws as they can think of.

2012-03-15 12:26:07 PM
In a sane political environment, savvy Republicans would use the Violence Against Women Act renewal and meager expansion as an easy win to rebuild their sensible pro-women-on-most-issues bona fides going into November. Unfortunately, the modern Republican Party is collectively insane.

As suggested by Mr. Sessions, Republicans detect a whiff of politics in the Democrats' timing.

Let's say those dirty democraps are timing this for political purposes. Pray tell how renewing a widely bi-partisan '94 bill, one against domestic abuse, could possibly be political? Explain how one's stance on violence against women is now partisan?

Well, according to Senator Grassley, it "creates so many new programs for underserved populations that it risks losing the focus on helping victims, period."

So I guess Native Americans and Homosexuals can't be victims and are undeserving of this protection.

Its because admitting you are wrong is a weakness. When you royally fark up, the only choice you have is to double down.

And when that blows up? All in.

Wait a minute... wait a minute it. You mean the Violence Against Women Act is actually AGAINST violence against women?

... Undocumented workers are "undeserving" too, apparently.

You can just feel the compassion from these people.

The obvious solution is to give men a tax cut. If men pay less taxes, they'll be less stressed and less likely to hit their wives. But that's probably too complicated for broads to understand.

2012-03-15 12:33:41 PM
Ghastly: Wait a minute... wait a minute it. You mean the Violence Against Women Act is actually AGAINST violence against women?

It's okay though. It only happens to women who don't vote Republican.

"would increase the availability of free legal assistance to victims." That isn't "free." It costs taxpayers money, and we desperately need to cut spending. Once again the Democrats want everyone to rely on big government, when all woman have to do is "think back to all the good times." But nooooo! Can't have women depend on their own self. Democrats are the real sexists.

The GOP has become the old man with the car at the farmers market. They have created a crisis with women, and instead of hitting the brakes they are stomping down on the accelerator.

Funny isn't it? They sense it's a trap, because of the timing, but the obvious way to avoid the trap escapes them.

Be fair. That old man hit the accelerator on accident.

I don't know how anyone can batter a woman. They end up being too greasy and are a biatch to reheat. Personally I like mine seared on the grill, but almost raw in the middle. Simple, but tasty.
