macil22: You liberals really think the violence against women act is a good bill?

jehovahs witness protection: If more wimmenz would STFU, git back in the kitchen and make sammiches, we would need such legislation.

/there are typical farkers who will be OUTRAGED by my comment, and those people are sad, humorless individuals

Keep it going guys, all the way to November

WTF Indeed: Well if women would just shut up, get off the pill, and go back into the kitchen there wouldn't be any violence against women.

DAMN YOU!

It's about damn time. Since 94 the Dem's have been on the losing end of these things and FINALLY we have some people running the show who have half a brain. You put the other side on the defensive so much they lose their damn minds and vote against even the most logical things, making them look dumber than they already are. The only way this gets better is if the GOP finally takes that last step and Santorum wins (which is almost impossible now). I would LOVE 4 months of Obama versus Santorum. It might actually lead to the end of the Republican party as we know it. On the other hand, Romney getting the nomination will fracture the party so much it will take a miracle for them to win anything in the next 8 years.

As a matter of fact, yes we do.

macil22: You liberals really think the violence against women act is a good bill?

Well, it passed in 1994 and was renewed in 2000 and 2005, so at least a majority used to think it was a good bill. I wonder what's changed? Hmmm...real stumper

wildcardjack: I got screwed by VAWA. My ex-wife never got prosecuted for BEATING ME WITH AN OAR.

And yet I had to go to court because I knocked her down trying to get away from her fists of "pathological liar gets her lies broke down" fury. I had blood oozing from bite marks on my tricep. Dinner plate sized bruises on my back.

farking acknowledge women beat men. Get over the "we're all meek" stereotype and see that some women go to violence as their first resort.

Just like some African-Americans during Jim Crow killed white people. "Why are all these people worried about lynchings, when white people are victims too?"

I had a client (male) who was physically abused by his wife often & seriously. He videotaped it without her knowledge, and we filed a Temporary Restraining Order and went to court. Her defense at trial was "he makes me so angry, I just can't help myself."

My client ended up with a Final Restraining Order, the house AND the kids.

Dinki: Humean_Nature: I expected religious wharrgarble and xenophobia, but a rage against women? Really?

Well they are sort of running out of new demographics to be mad at.

So they're bringing back the classics! I get it, it's like retro or throwback uniforms in sports. So that way they can be mad at women and black people all over again, and in a few more decades they'll come full circle and be mad at Latinos and Middle-Easterners again.

Dinki: would include same-sex couples in programs for domestic violence.

WTF do you think?

2012-03-15 01:13:46 PM
December 2012, the Republicans are wondering "Why didn't any slutty, child abusing, livestock-like, feeble-minded, welfare queen women vote for us?"

Shotgun Justice: I am amazed at the amount of people that can't tell the difference between the word underserved and undeserved.

/BTW I think it should actually be under-served.

I hand-waved the mistake away by assuming that to the GOP, the terms mean the same thing. :P

2012-03-15 01:14:00 PM
It also dilutes the focus on domestic violence by expanding protections to new groups, like same-sex couples, they say.

Expanding protections to domestic violence in same-sex couples will ruin the sanctity of the abuse in my marriage.

2012-03-15 01:14:13 PM
Republicans say the measure, under the cloak of battered women, unnecessarily expands immigration avenues by creating new definitions for immigrant victims to claim battery.

I'd like these prolapsed rectums to spend one day taking calls on the crisis line my partner has worked at for several years, or doing one of the other jobs helping victims of abuse she's done for years now. They may be surprised to learn how many women have their lack of status, or precarious status, wielded by an abuser as another method of forcing them to remain in the abusive relationship.

Who am I kidding - they'd just blame the victim for being in the relationship at all and deport hir (usually her) at the first opportunity.

abb3w: "You think that's possible? You think they might have put things in there we couldn't support that maybe then they could accuse you of not being supportive of fighting violence against women?"

Sort of like putting in random crap to military appropriations bills, and then accusing those who won't vote for it of not supporting the troops?

EXACTLY LIKE THAT. The GOP are full of shiat when they pull that, and the Dems are full of shiat when they stick other stuff in this bill.

Koalaesq: FTFA: It also dilutes the focus on domestic violence by expanding protections to new groups, like same-sex couples, they say.

Because if you're an immigrant homosexsual being beaten to crap by your SO every night and have no other place to go in this nation and no money of your own, YOU should be the one who's penalized, not the abuser.

Obviously.

So what kind of same sex couple is covered under this? Lesbian only? After all, it's violence against women act, right? Or does the um, 'catcher' in a male homosexual relationship get protected too? Is the bulldyke out of luck if the feminine partner hits her with a shovel? These exact kinds of questions need to be asked on the Senate floor.

Xythero: You know, there would be no Republican war on women if there wasn't a giant segment of the American population cheering these bastards on.

It's not a giant segment of the American population as a whole. It's a small but very loud Christian minority within the GOP.

Bloody William: How has this become a genuine war on women over just a few weeks?

It feels like I blinked and Republicans went utterly misogynistically insane, abandoning any sense of reason or even political strategy in favor of throwing out as many anti-women laws as they can think of.

Domestic Assaults occur in a higher percentage with immigrants (legal or otherwise), and as functioning members of society it is important to provide support for them.

wildcardjack: I got screwed by VAWA

No you didn't. You may have gotten screwed by your state's domestic violence laws, but the VAWA is just a funding bill and had no actual bearing on whether or not your local law enforcement and courts believed that a woman was violent to a man.

2012-03-15 01:21:18 PM
wildcardjack: I got screwed by VAWA. My ex-wife never got prosecuted for BEATING ME WITH AN OAR...

Of course sane people recognize that there are a lot of crazy and abusive women out there, and yes they commit violent acts to men (a lot). Personally I think that women are just as prone to get violent as men, although they are usually less dangerous overall due to the combination of weak/crazy when they do it... as long as there are no guns/knives/oars nearby.

That said, I totally agree with laws and programs that people affected by domestic violence overall. They should assist whichever partner is getting abused without preference to the gender.

2012-03-15 01:21:42 PM
To be fair, they really should change the title of the bill. But that's the only criticism of it in the article that I find even remotely valid.

2012-03-15 01:22:01 PM
I know reading the article is actually discouraged here, but it's not so much that the GOP is against the act as it against all the stuff the Dems are trying to sneak in there to force the GOP to vote against it.

You know...politics.

You may now continue with your WARRHGARBL.

DA dropped them in favor of going after me. The DA in Denton County TX has run on a campaign of never dropping charges against men in domestic violence cases. Though I don't know how many charges against women he has dropped over the years.

/Yes, I have a touch of PTSD from that biatch.

That's just the name. It doesn't mean anything. Sometimes lawmakers even like to try their hand at satire, and name bills ironically, like the PATRIOT ACT.

I can't wait to hear Romney weigh in on this.

2012-03-15 01:22:26 PM
I'd actually be fine if this was just a domestic abuse law that covered any partner (straight, gay, male, female, citizen, or noncitizen living/visiting here) who was being battered, but this is not the argument the Republicans are actually making. They think more people should be Excluded, not included.

The Democrats should really start talking about how they want to re-ratify the 19th amendment.
