sweetmelissa31: Oh my gosh, idea: they should call it the Violence Against Girls act = VAG.

Why would they call it something they're afraid of?

James!: That worked better in my head...

VAGING sounds pretty cool too.

hahahahhahahahaa....

impaler: Lumpmoose: In a sane political environment, savvy Republicans would use the Violence Against Women Act renewal and meager expansion as an easy win to rebuild their sensible pro-women-on-most-issues bona fides going into November. Unfortunately, the modern Republican Party is collectively insane.

Funny isn't it? They sense it's a trap, because of the timing, but the obvious way to avoid the trap escapes them.

It's hard to find a conservative or libertarian opposed to homeless shelters. I can't fathom how anyone would fight against a law funding battered women shelters. They're similarly a last ditch, imperfect attempt to catch people falling through the cracks of society and literally prevent death.

Why don't we call it the "Hey, assholes! Let's Not Be Like the Middle East Act."

I think we all knew that the GOP was going to run screaming off the rails, but I don't think anyone predicted that it would do so in this direction. I expected religious wharrgarble and xenophobia, but a rage against women? Really?

That's beautiful, man.

The Democrats need to throw the Republicans a bone here. How about they throw in a rider that allows men to forbid their wives from using contraception or having an abortion if it violates his religious beliefs?

Yeah, this kinda surprises me too. I thought they'd go nuts over something like gay rights. But, they already do that, don't they? And no one cares.

I'm so flabbergasted.

Is this what really happens when a party dies? They go completely batshiat insane?

Seriously. The only hope they have left is stopping people from voting Democratic.

WTF is wrong with Republicans?

Reid and Co. are getting pretty good at trolling, I have to admit. I'm half expecting the "Breathing Act of 2012".

I'm kind of hoping they come out with the "Let's Not Drink Dioxin Act"

2012-03-15 01:02:09 PM

what_now: Republicans say the measure, under the cloak of battered women, unnecessarily expands immigration avenues by creating new definitions for immigrant victims to claim battery. More important, they say, it fails to put in safeguards to ensure that domestic violence grants are being well spent. It also dilutes the focus on domestic violence by expanding protections to new groups, like same-sex couples, they say.

The GOP is ok with women getting tortured or murdered, as long as some gay and brown people are getting tortured and murdered as well.

This is some seriously high-quality trolling by the Democrats. They get three major demographic groups pissed at the Republicans, all in one little bill!

2012-03-15 01:02:15 PM
Anybody know what, exactly, was 'added' to the bill that Republicans are balking at? Just curious if this is a legit point, or just smoke.

Cythraul: This just gets better and better.

And by better, we really mean worse

/Sigh
/I think even the Onion would have found this headline too preposterous

2012-03-15 01:02:38 PM

sweetmelissa31: Women, even though the GOP is really taking a dump on you right now, you should stay with them. Just remember the good times.

Sing it with me:

"She's a good hearted woman in love with a good timin' man
She loves him in spite of his ways she don't understand
With teardrops & laughter they pass through this world hand in hand
A good hearted woman, lovin' a GOP man."

2012-03-15 01:02:39 PM
We need more women in Congress, we saw a net loss of women in 2010 and that's inexcusable given their already uneven representation. Women were the majority vote in 2008... the way the GOP is moving the grain it's going to be really hard for them to make the case that they support their interests or are in any way serious about representing them.

"creates an ideology that all men are guilty and all women are victims."

They prefer to create the ideology that all women are sluts/whores and men are here, like Mighty Mouse, to save the day for us - the poor weak wimmin.

while I applaud Lisa Murkowski's efforts to bring the GOP back from the ledge, I find it disconcerting that she is the voice of reason here.

I got screwed by VAWA. My ex-wife never got prosecuted for BEATING ME WITH AN OAR.

And yet I had to go to court because I knocked her down trying to get away from her fists of "pathological liar gets her lies broke down" fury. I had blood oozing from bite marks on my tricep. Dinner plate sized bruises on my back.

farking acknowledge women beat men. Get over the "we're all meek" stereotype and see that some women go to violence as their first resort.

Ehh
2012-03-15 01:03:54 PM
Things were better in the 50s, when women and gays and nonwhites knew their place. The GOP is just doing what it can to make you understand that.

"Obviously, you want to be for the title," Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri, a member of the Republican leadership, said of the Violence Against Women Act. "If Republicans can't be for it, we need to have a very convincing alternative."

hehe, ya think Roy?

Edsel: This is some seriously high-quality trolling by the Democrats.

The GOP falling for this is like someone trying to get Bevets involved in an argument. They *SHOULD* know that it's a fng trap, and neatly avoid it.

Dems: "Domestic Violence is bad. We should try to prevent it".

GOP: "oh shiat.. well.. we want you to think we agree, but we don't, so...let's say that..uh..small government...shiat, what's the right answer? Should we piss of the wife beaters? no, can't do that, that's our base..uh.. can we blame this on the gays? Nah..that won't fly...well.. do we want to..just say that we ALSO think Domestic Violence is bad? We don't have to mean it?? Oh shiat.. I..can't..DAMN YOU FARTBAMA!!! "

FTFA: It also dilutes the focus on domestic violence by expanding protections to new groups, like same-sex couples, they say.

Because if you're an immigrant homosexsual being beaten to crap by your SO every night and have no other place to go in this nation and no money of your own, YOU should be the one who's penalized, not the abuser.

Obviously.

Brandyelf: Is this a trick question? Will I click on the link expecting to find the answer to be "Republicans, naturally" only to find that it's backwards day and every single Democratic representative voted no?

In before "Demnocrats are the REAL ...."

impaler: Once again the Democrats want everyone to rely on big government, when all woman have to do is "think back to all the good times." But nooooo! Can't have women depend on their own self. Democrats are the real sexists.

Dammit.
