I had a cat that used to love going for walks on a leash. Mostly because everyone would pet her and tell her what and amazing cat she was.

Walkies yes; joggies no. Have already forgotten whether cat couldn't or wouldn't keep up. Also wonder why this was greenlit?

As long as the cat was not directly in the sun or left there for an inordinate period of time, what was the problem?

2012-03-15 01:20:12 PM
I suspect someone who would take a cat out on a leash would... relate to the world a bit differently than the expected norm. I doubt there was any malice involved, just a weird cat person doing a weird cat thing.

the domesticated cat was being attached by wild life.

Could be stolen.

Or, as the article says: "According to police radio traffic, the cat was being attacked by a flock of birds while it was tied to the rock."

Weird. If you can't run, run so far away you get attacked by a flock of birds.

There's an old loony lady in neighborhood who takes her cat out for walks in this:

Franco was ticketed on suspicion of domestic animal cruel treatment, but because the cat was not injured, it was returned to Franco.

This make me want to tie a rock around his neck and drop him off a bridge.

I went to the supermarket during my lunch break today. Some lady was in line for a sub and she was cradling a teeny weeny kitten in a blanket and feeding it from a bottle.

My cat walks with me. We even go on short hikes in the woods behind my house. But jogging? That's like effort. Cats don't do effort.

Yeah, one of our neighbors when I was growing up had a cat that would follow him when he went hunting.

How would a cat have time to jog what with their 18 hour a day nap

2012-03-15 03:45:20 PM
Cats outside having a flop in the sun? Sure.

Cats outside prowling around in the grass? Sure.

Cats outside doing something resembling physical activity for a sake other than catching something and or that lasts more than ten seconds? No.

I tried to put one of the cats on a leash once so we could clean him after he'd been sprayed by a skunk. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but it ended up with the cat on my back howling with all of his claws dug into my flesh as I thrashed around trying to dislodge the beast. Then I smelled like skunk too, both of us had to sleep outside that night.

Cats are more like sprinters.

Then why ticket him? Either ticket him for causing the cat harm, or leave him be.
'suspicion of cruel treatment'

Since when is "I think you might have done it, but I can't be sure" a ticketable offense?

We have an....alien in a cat suit.. in our neighborhood. It used to walk a dog and I'm sorry we didn't get video. The cat would walk along fences along a pedestrian path, the dog would be on the path. Sometimes the cat would stop and glare at the dog when the dog (inevitably) got distracted. An instant later, the dog would resume the walk. This was routine and happened daily for a few months.

2012-03-15 03:50:13 PM
my cat would frown on being put on a leash and then being forced to jog.

sometimes when I go to the grapevine birds fly out and attack me but I don't go calling the law about it. They used to fly out and attack my cat but she'd usually ignore them unless they startled her then she'd jump, sometimes do a flip and maybe swat at them. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't arrested. She's dead now, at 16 years old she got hit by a car, I guess I should've tied her to a rock.

We take our cats out on leashes, but around the yard. Since one cost almost five grand to have put back together after being hit by a car they don't go out except on a leash. They're fine with it except when we decide we're bored and take them back in. They get to wander around eating grass and catnip, roll in the gravel walkways, sniff outside smells...they love it. They've even each caugh voles while they were still on the leash

/No jogging.

Yeah, it sounds to me like the guy was just trying to keep his cat safe after realising his neat idea wasn't going to work. Maybe he should have just taken kitty home and then come back to jog, though.
I'm sorry your kitty died. All mine are long gone too :(

We put a harness on our biggest cat once because my husband wanted to take him camping on a leash (my husband and I were dating at the time, so his only cat). That cat howled for awhile, then flopped on the ground and did not move. For DAYS! We figured he would get up for food, but he was a determined little shiat. Finally my husband caved, gave him some food, and the cat went on another to days not moving. He finally figured out the plastic clasp would lead to his freedom and chewed the thing apart. Needless to say he didn't go camping with us and never had to wear a harness/collar ever again.
