Google says 90 million people have signed up, but analysts and anecdotal evidence show that fairly few have turned into heavy users.

Exactly this... I signed up for Google+, but, I barely ever log in.

Honestly, I've seen more positive buzz with people I know about sites like Pinterest than I've ever seen about Google+.

2012-03-15 12:41:18 AM
I'm annoyed whenever I go to one of my friends' Google+ pages, and it says that they "have not shared anything with [me]." I know it's probably because they don't actively use Google+, but that message makes it sound like they're sharing stuff with their real friends while I've instead been put into some bad circle.

I have one friend that actually uses Google+. Half the time when I search for something on Google...anything...his picture pops up.

Also, what's the deal with the "fake friends" they're padding my feed with? If I wanted to hear what random strangers had to say, I'd Fark.

It seems that Google's fallen into the same state of mind that Microsoft had for so many years. There's a hot new product out there that people are flocking to? Then we must immediately, and slavishly copy it! Who cares if t has nothing to do with our current business model, it's HOT and NOW and we must have one!

Google+ was a failure from the day it was conceived. The only people who would have been interested in using it already had Facebook accounts. Anyone without a Facebook account probably just doesn't want one, let alone a cheap copy of one.

Google, I want only one thing from you. A search engine that is fast and simple. And with the way you've screwed up Image Search, you can't even lay claim to that anymore. If I wanted to use Bing, I'd use Bing. I had something better until you broke it.

Strip the crap out of your business model. Get back to basics. Get back to what worked.

Get back to what made you a verb.

Being a poseur isn't it.

The problem (and the reason they're _not_ the next MS IMO; MS has many large revenue streams) is Google only has one source of mentionable income: targeted ads. They're steadily losing their monopoly on targeted ads, which is why they're trying their damnedest to find a second source of real revenue (Google Docs makes pennies).

Google Apps for enterprise is making a lot of news, but nearly all of its growth is coming solely from Gmail.

Google has not learned anything from Nexus One. It is trying to sell services without actually interacting with customers at any point in the process.

For example, take customer service: online for almost everything. Or customer service is outsourced to other vendors that are not necessarily certified in Google Apps.

Google+: an excellent service for the .001% of people that didn't have a facebook account multiplied by the .001% of people that didn't use a pseudonym when creating their gmail account.

So, yeah, that one guy probably found it to be a great value.

Google is evil, but Google+ is actually a great product. The real issue is this: Google+ is only vaguely about connecting with your friends, it's mainly about connecting with total strangers.

Also, hangouts + Google Docs integration is one of the best online meeting environments I've ever used.

Google search died for me the moment they started to fark up what used to be a simple, efficient site.

i39.tinypic.com

That's a sample what it looks like with a simple script blocker denying the google.com script. Without a script blocker the Google Instant crapola has the page seizuring until you finish typing or go and change the settings yet again. It's an obnoxious novelty.

The shiat sidebar serves zero purpose. Oh a link to images, maps, vide.......all the crap that's at the top of the f*cking page to begin with. More search tools? That's what the "advanced search" button is for and has been for since its inception. Half the shiat on their page is just senseless clutter. Links to YouTube videos because you can't seem to figure out how to make something you dumped an insane amount of money on into a long-term revenue generator. How adorable. If I wanted to search videos I would have clicked the video search button, which you have conveniently place on the page not once, but twice within close proximity to each other.

I might even be willing to let your script run and mine me for data that you can sell to advertisers if you hadn't gone completely bat-shiat insane. Instead I block all your scripts, have my browser nuke all data after each close and use add-ons and other sites to trawl your search engine and discard anything but the relevant data I asked for.

Google started pissing me off when they made it such that you can't sign onto different services under different screen names. My student email address uses gmail, so every time I check my student email, I get logged out of youtube and docs. Voting and commenting on youtube videos is not allowed on my student account, as one example of an annoyance. I don't use Google+, but if I did, I'm sure checking my student email would sign me out of that, too.

Their searches have actually become worse, too. Google keeps trying to guess at what I meant to say, bolding unrelated words in the searches as if that's what I searched for. I'm tired of having to put " " around everything I search for. I never used to have to do that.

I used to be a big Google fanboy, but they've lost that. I now just use Google because of inertia, but as soon as something else comes along, I'm looking to jump ship. (No, Bing is worse.)

Adult content is your answer to why it's better? Do you even have the first idea why Facebook is so damned popular?

I've said before that the reason Facebook has won is that we got our parents hooked on it and, conversely, our kids don't mind that we are. As soon as it became the family share site, it became unbeatable, period. The stuff in the G+ ad? Either it's rehashes of common stuff or stuff no one cares about. And that commercial, fwiw, made it look so. damned. pretentious. It looked like the Hipster Family site from what they did with it. And 90% of the people I talk to on Facebook wouldn't know Hipster if you put the thick-rimmed glasses and hoodies on them yourself.

Short of a total shutdown, you are never going to get entire family and friend circles to move en masse to a site they've never heard of that does the same thing as what you already have.

As my main home desktop is Linux-based, I still can't get myself to use Bing, but Google sure as hell isn't what it used to be, and I'm sorely tempted to jump ship. Besides hiding everything if you won't log in (no links for Advanced Search on the main page anymore), there's another problem that showed up long before they jumped down the privacy rabbit hole. Namely, they're doing the exact sort of things that drove me from Alta Vista et. al. to Google in the first place: second-guessing search terms and bringing up irrelevant clutter. For a while, I was able to counter that by putting plus signs before words (an old Alta Vista trick!), but they neutered even that.

When I search for an exact phrase, I want the EXACT PHRASE, dammit!

The great thing about Google+ is that it was made very easy and clear to share with individual groups instead of accidentally sharing something with the whole world - and also, very easy to say something 100% public without making your entire profile public. That's where Google+ shined - it made people feel they have more control over their privacy.

It only took Facebook a month or two to completely copy this behavior. Now on Facebook it's just about as easy as it was on Google+

And also, any points Google+ gained regarding privacy - only sharing certain information with people/friends - they completely lost with their new privacy policy - ALL your information is now shared with any advertiser and not just certain sections of it. They shat on any good faith they gained.

Facebook is for finding and communicating with people you know in the real world.

G+ is for finding and communicating with people who you don't necessarily know, but are interesting.

The guy in TFA is not wrong, but he is also a whiny biatch who should know better than to burn bridges like that. By 2015 he'll be burned out at his new Microsoft job, and then where will he go?

The problem with Google's total integration strategy, in my opinion, is that they haven't considered well enough the differences between productive and recreational uses. When I search the web, I'm being productive. When I look up an address on Google Maps, I'm being productive. When I spend 3 hours clicking through related videos on YouTube... I'm not being productive.

Google+ is a great place for professional networking. But it's not "fun" the same way Facebook is, and that's not just an effect of how many friends use each site.

I like G+, but nobody in my circle of friends/family is really using it...so, yeah. Pretty worthless, which is too bad, because Google has built some really f*cking cool functionality into it.

On the other hand, Google owns waaaay too big of a slice of my internet usage, and I've started diversifying. I've been using DuckDuckGo for search, and it's awesome. Super straightforward search, combined with instant answers pulled from various sources, and !bang functionality whenever you need to do an image/video/whatever search. Highly recommended. It feels like Google did 10 years ago, in that it's simple, powerful, straightforward, and NOT EVIL. Not sure I can say any of that about Google these days, except for the powerful part.

I'm not quite sure I understood that, but I think you may be the only google+ fanboy in existence. I'm guessing it's an extension of your Android fanboidism?

Lets have a little test:

Look in your account settings for 'multiple sign in'. I regularly have multiple accounts active and switch between them w/out having to log out. It has some flaws (w/in gmail, calendar invites- the 'add to calendar' link just tries to add it to your default calendar which may not have access to the item you're trying to add), but generally works fine.
