"Like any other state, there has to be compliance with this and any other federal law," Santorum said. "And that is that English has to be the principal language. There are other states with more than one language such as Hawaii but to be a state of the United States, English has to be the principal language."

That's great. Except it doesn't say that in the Constitution.

Santorum is an ignorant farkbucket.

Hilarious.

This is one of your frontrunners, GOP. I'm sure you like the dog-whistle racism implied here, but do you really want to lose the entire Hispanic vote?

The actual 'frontrunner' found himself in a bit of hot water during the Guam
primary when they asked to explain his quip from a few months back about
re-assigning judges who didn't pass his ideological litmus test to there.

If they'd WANTED statehood, they'd have it by now.

So...fail.

They have been offered statehood. 3 times in fact IIRC. It was voted down each time.

I haven't done the research, but I bet on these issues, Rick is a 10ther and all about states rights:

- Abortion
- Gay Marriage
- Education

And on these issues, Rick's a Federalist:

- Gun Control
- Drug Crimes

Anybody have the facts?

None of these republicans positions are determined on a federalist / state's right basis. If it agrees with their preconcieved notions and moralities, it's a good law, whether its written at a state or federal level.

If a proposed law disagrees with their religious convictions, whether it be at a local, state, or federal level, then it is an unconstitutional breach of freedom of religion, or an abuse of power, or curtains the people's rights, or some other butthurt. If a 'good' law is overturned by a judge then he's an activist judge ruling from the bench. If a 'bad' law is overturned, then the judge is just making the correct legal distinction.

For the most obvious example, see their support for DOMA (a federal law which defines marriage), while at the same time saying that the government has no place defining marriage, and also at the same time supporting state bans on gay marriage and railing against states which legalize gay marriage.

Republicans: it's not the method that matters, it's the madness.

/implying that it's not too late for them to un-burn those bridges between themselves and the Hispanics who aren't Miami Cubans

Not to mention the support of converting DOMA from just a law to a Constitutional amendment.

Yep.

And unlike the U.S., Puerto Rico has two official languages, Spanish and English.

Oh, so Santorum is being a racist dickhole. Nothing new there.

Oh...so Santorum doesn't know that the country he's running to represent doesn't have an official language? And he thinks that English as an official language is required for statehood by federal law?

Oh my.

This guy is a class act. There is no such law on the books. There is no mention of language as a requirement for statehood in the Constitution.

Liar, idiot, or both? I have my opinion.

2012-03-14 06:16:39 PM
Come on, aren't there any Santorum supporters here? There has to be someone to contend that he isn't just a a big Andy Kaufman goof?

No, no they don't, you ignorant bag of puss, no state is required to have an "official language"

You'll have to wait till the liters get on here. Most of his supporters aren't bootstrappy enough to pay for TF (read: trolls don't like to pay to be able to troll), and those few who are on TF are just busy in the BIE thread.

2012-03-14 06:37:57 PM
I've come to the conclusion that he's trolling us, and hopes to fail because there's more money in being the next Sarah Palin, than there is in being the President.

I can tell you this one is wrong. He's a Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage guy.

Honestly, the more I've learned about the current crop of Republicans running for (and, largely, are already in) office, I've only become more certain that I don't dislike conservatives; I dislike deliberately ignorant people who have no neither ability/will to engage in critical thinking, nor have any desire to learn more about the world around them.

The problem with the GOP right now (and the "independents" that mainly seem to be concentrated around Ron Paul) is that most of the folks representing that party fall exactly into this mold.

2012-03-14 07:30:55 PM
These people have lost their minds. That's the only explanation.

Amazing how so many of these GOP tards that keep flogging the "Founding Fathers" angle have never read the words they actually wrote.

Its a good thing his opinion on the matter is completely irrelevant, even in the unlikely event that he becomes President.

Republicans: STATES RIGHTS! STATES RIGHTS! STATES RIGHTS! ... oh but we want to be able to take your "States rights" away for picking you own state's language!!

Where do they get this BS from? Do they think history/law is something you just make up to fit your views?

I love that he wants to be President, but knows fark-all about what's actually in the Constitution.

Uhh, Ricky? Might want to stop homeschooling your spawnlings and think about heading into a classroom yourself. One that teaches US History and American Government.

Time to cut the cord with Puerto Rico, sink or swim

You can pretty much reduce the entirety of Santorum as a politician to: "Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told X a statement at odds with the U.S. Constitution."

2012-03-14 07:54:49 PM
Fun Fact:

Martin Van Buren, the first president born as an American citizen, spoke Dutch. English was his second language.

WIth the exception of Miami Cubans, does the GOP get ANY of the Hispanic vote?

Being mainly socially conservative Catholics doesn't make up for being called wetbacks, beaners, and illegal aliens and being told to "speak English instead of the language of the ghetto".

2012-03-14 07:55:06 PM
AND they have to be able to count to potato!

2012-03-14 07:56:01 PM
I'll bet when they lose in November, the Republicans will be honestly confused and shocked. "Where did we go wrong? Why doesn't anyone outside of rich, old white men vote for us?"

They got the non-Cuban Hispanic vote in Florida when Jeb Bush was running, but then the rest of the GOP politicians in the state promptly dynamited all of the good-will that Jeb had created among Hispanic voters.

Everyone in Puerto Rico already knows how to speak English. They're taught both languages in la escuela from the early grades. One of my Puerto Rican co-workers (an engineer) actually has better grammar when he's speaking English. Probably because of the slang he uses when speaking Spanish.

Goddamn people are stupid.

2012-03-14 07:59:48 PM
Honestly, if I was a Puerto Rican, I wouldn't want to join a country that had this clown shoe parade running for its highest office. I'd be just fine with being a commonwealth.

How embarrassing our country must appear to people elsewhere in the world.

Admit it, if you were bilingual and Santorum came anywhere near you, wouldn't you pretend to speak only a language other than English just to get him to go away?

2012-03-14 08:06:19 PM
It's always a good sign when candidates for the highest office don't know the laws of the land they want to govern.

2012-03-14 08:06:32 PM
You should have to pass a test on the actual text of the U.S. Constitution, not the warrgarbl, to run for any public office...

I'm not even bilingual, and I'd do pretty much the same thing.

It is a kind of amazing that republicans have to invent new ways to be ignorant to maintain relevance.

2012-03-14 08:11:29 PM
English is our de facto official language, why does the right want to go all big government and mandate how people talk?

It seems silly to me when you consider that what we think of as English is such a melange of words from other languages. Are we going to have to purge our vocabulary? Does this mean we can't send our kids to kindergarden (German), put livestock in a corral (Swahili), give up our right to habeus cropus (Latin), ER doctors can't do triage (French), and we can't get drunk on Cinco de Mayo (Spanish)?

THIS.

At the moment, they have all the benefits of statehood except they don't get to vote for the president and (I think) their Congress-critter doesn't have an actual vote. Guess what, nobody actually gets to vote for the president. The advantage. No Federal Income Tax.

I'd gladly give up the farce of voting for the president if I got exempted from the income tax. Where do I sign up?

I think Ebonics needs to be the real language of this Great Country.
