So government spending hurts the economy. Got it.

Its the economy of Obamastan that is struggling.

I agree. And the only solution is to cap federal spending on things that the states should be choosing to pay for. It's time that those deadbeat states that are sucking hardest at the federal teat stand on their own two feet, and quit sponging off of their fellow citizens.

FARTNOISE FARTNOISE JUNIOR: One of the states bringing the country down is that liberal paradise, Wisconsin, with their communist leader, Scott Walker.

Source: Wisconsin lags in job creation, figures show (new window)

Wisconsin has a 7.1 percent unemployment rate. Obama would have that figure tattooed on his forehead if the rest of the country was at 7.1.

Over the past 12 months, Wisconsin's declining number of jobs overall has come from government employees. The private sector has actually added a small number (900).

Wisconsin in January added 12,500 jobs.

The thing is, with both being true, the second one goes into their denial file. If they thought Bill Clinton might have been born in Vienna to a British father and young, American mother, they'd have tried it against him, too. Because he's white they would have dropped it when it became embarrassing.
We need to give the conservatives a safe space to open up to their own feelings, and realize that their not wanting to be racists, doesn't mean they aren't.
Likewise, we need to treat them like they don't want to be racists, even though they are.

Crunch61: So government spending hurts the economy. Got it.

Goverment spending is too vauge to really determine how much it helps the economy. Some is useless, while some of it can be benifical.

However, one big problem with goverment spending is that if it is not paid for and deficit spending continues at the rate we currently find ourselves (and the CBO projects for the next 10 years), the economy will definatly feel the pressures of this large and ever-increasing debt load.

In essence goverment spending is not bad, but it does and should have its limits.

Sure - in a recession, you spend to stimulate the economy. In boom times, you pay down the debt that came from the recession. If you do it right, you can start to even out the spikes between boom and bust, but you'll pretty much always have cycles.

Or you could, you know, hand out pallets of cash and cut taxes during the good years instead of paying down the debt and wonder why, eight years later, things are falling apart.

Since when are politics and reality even remotely related? It helps governors politically to showcase how they are improving their local economies. It helps national Republican politicians politically to show how B-Rock The Islamic Shock Hussein Taxbongo has trashed the US economy. If a politician thought it would help his reelection chances, he'd run around the White House naked with a dildo strapped to his forehead. If you trust anything that comes out of a politicians mouth ever, you're a fool. Doubly so in an election year.

Well, if the governors of Ohio, Florida, Nevada, and Michigan think that the economies in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, and Michican are imroving; then clearly anybody who thinks the economy of the US as a whole isn't improving, is an idiot. The other 48 states don't matter as long as those 4 are doing OK, do they Obama?

Dr. Whoof: Yeah, you know, that's the same argument that was made under Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and then Bush 2. It's always too big to fix, too deep to fill, all that.

Uh, debt to GDP in those days was 50% to 60% and deficts were 2% to 4% of GDP.

Today we are at 102% of Debt to GDP and our deficts have been 8.5% to 10% of GDP for the last 4 years. In addition, the deficits projected by the CBO are remain at about 6 to 8% of GDP for the next decade.

Just a little different time we are living in today. If you can't recognize that and update your talking points to reflect the problems we currently face, you and your ilk will get tromped in this upcoming election.

Meanwhile Republicans chant "deficits do not matter" when in power and "debt is crushing us" when they are not.

You have a point there, but this is just politics that both sides play. Deficits do matter when they are of the magnitude we have seen for the last 4 years and what is projected for the next decade.

How much did the gap increase? It looks to me like it was about 0.8% in January 2011 and about 0.9% in January 2012. 0.1% improvement in unemployment is miniscule and hardly statistically significant.
