I will piss myself with laughter if Luck is drafted by the Colts and refuses to play there for some idiotic reason (or something as simple as "I wanted to learn from Payton Manning, but now that he's not here, I don't need to be either. Trade me")

It's going to be fun to watch Luck fail and all the excuses and 'Well he's young and has growing to do even though we surely said he was ready as a rookie to lead this team, we always expected him to need some time blah blah blah.'

I don't want Luck to fail but odds and history say he will.

Peyton Manning went 3-13 and threw 28 INTs as a rookie. We won't be able to judge Luck after one year.

I don't think Luck gets as much of a pass if his rookie season is a disaster of that magnitude. Manning wasn't following one of the best QB's of all time in that first year.

Add the possibility of Manning being elsewhere and maybe succeeding with a new team and it's going to be an incredible amount of pressure.

Manning also had 26TDs and 3,700 yards.

It wasn't a bad rookie year for a QB.

His last 5 games were also pretty good 10Tds, 6 Ints, rating 90.

It'll be more important how Luck finishes than how he starts.

This is infuriating. We're so dedicated to trimming the fat and building up a new team, but we re-sign the visibly slowing Wayne. Meanwhile we let Garcon walk away.

Now Luck will have Grandpa Wayne and the Concussion Kid to throw too if we don't let Collie walk. I hope Tamme can pick up a lot of slack this year.

Not a terrible move, but what the fark were they thinking by getting rid of Clark? Yes, he's been hurt, but a good TE is the best tool a young QB can have.

Yes. I'd say objectively Luck can only be a pleasant surprise as a rookie, unless he's Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell.

Garcon is OK, but even a slowing Reggie Wayne is better for Luck. Wayne has way more experience and I'm sure clout among offensive players. He also catches the balls he should catch. Garcon makes enough amazing, difficult catches that it's easy to forget that he drops the easy ones. No thanks. I'll take Wayne. Also, Garcon is more expensive than Wayne, so this isn't really going against the trimming-the-fat strategy.

Manning's original season wasn't a barn burner, especially with the cherry picked negative stats, but he also had some good upside stats as posted. The biggest difference between Luck and Manning's first years, IMO, is situational. The table is set completely different for both entering. Again, I have no dog in the fight, nothing against the Colts or Luck, nor a hard-on for Manning. I just see the odds favoring him not being the success he is touted as being. Especially if Manning does good, or even great. The ramifications from it all could be excellent to watch for someone on the outside of it all like me.

Garcon is younger and still in his prime. It'd be better for him to grow with Luck the way Wayne did with Manning. Wayne is still viable but after these three years I don't see him coming back. Garcon might cost a little bit more, but he would be a valuable asset in the coming years for a growing team.

I mean, I see what you're saying, but I don't think Garcon is someone you want to grown your receiving corps around. I agree Wayne probably won't be back after three years, but I think there's something to be said for having a long-time veteran to work with. Maybe they can pick up a viable #1 receiver in the time being. Garcon is fine, but I guess I'd rather have Wayne's experience, knowledge, and leadership over Garcon's dubious talent and creeping diva-ness. After all that, I could have understood going either way, though. I just happen to like this option better.

Garcon didn't cost a little more. He cost a lot more. We have limited cap space to work with this year and many holes to fill. It doesn't make sense to drop $42 million on an inconsistent, not even #1 quality receiver. The team is rebuilding from the ground up, but there still needs to be talent (hell warm bodies) on the team to move forward. We can afford to splurge on a super duper #1 receiver next year when we gain back 38 million in the dead cap space. Until then we need to spread the money around a little to fill in major holes that we can't or want to avoid hitting in the draft.

Yeah I understand that too. Mainly the Colts front office just worries me. It's not like a hockey team having a fire sale to rebuild mid-season. They have consistently neglected the defense and poured everything into Manning for too long without planning for the future. I'm just looking forward to a few rocky years.

Not that this is an indicator of "on-the-field diva-ness" but my dad talked with Pierre a few times when the construction on Georgia Street was impacting the parking and general getting in and out of the building Pierre was living in. It was a pretty big inconvenience and my dad said he was super cool about everything.

Yeah, they do a pretty good job of that I must admit. We'll see if they can hang onto wallace. I want to keep him for sure, but after seeing Plaxico and Holmes (and even Randle El) take off in recent years while they quietly reloaded with relative unknowns and stayed at a high level I'm not TOO worried about it. He's a unique guy but they can survive his loss. If they can improve the offensive line that is. Enough with the band-aids already.. They need some USDA prime beef.

JohnBigBootay: Droog8912: When you do a good job of drafting and reward those players with large contracts, you don't need to make the big splash in free agency.

So very much THIS. We already know Roethlisberger's some kind of a cyborg or something, we don't need any more proof. :P

/seriously though, we can haz O-line?
//please?

I liked this from the Colts blog Stampede Blue:

Unlike Bill Polian, who despised free agency almost as much as he hated the fans of the team he worked for, new G.M. Ryan Grigson actually (gasp!) likes signing free agents!

Colts signed Winston Justice for the O-line, got a new DT Cory Redding, they let Dan Orlovsky go to the Bucs. Any opinions on Justice and Redding?

IF the guys they have can stay healthy, they are almost mediocre.. They really need to bring in a FA to school the guys that are healthy, AND bring in some young talent. Since Grimm left, the line has gotten horrible as a whole.

We swapped 6th round picks with the Eagles for Justice. He wasn't an FA signing. It looks like a mixed bag on him. He's looked solid at point, but Mathis and Dawson (worthless camp body) made him look like dog ass when we played them two years ago. I'm assuming he'll compete for RT and either get cut or shunted into RG if he doesn't pan out. Eagles are on the hook for all his bonus money, so we don't lose anything by cutting him.

Cory Redding is a legitimately good 3-4 DE that we'll need to transition from our Tampa-2 4-3 to a hybrid 4-3/3-4 to our eventual 3-4 (assumption here). Mathis and Pagano have already gone on record as saying they plan on using Freeney has a 3-4 rusher (olb) or a 4-3 DE depending on the look, so they won't be competing for playing time.

I'm pretty happy with the signings and activity so far, especially the Wayne signing. Luck will need weapons after all. His moves have been positive so far, but I want to see what he does with the draft and the rest of FA.

Justice plays well when he's healthy (duh) but it's been an issue. It was two-fold for Philly, both to clear cap space and because Justice has trouble in run-blocking schemes playing RT, which is where Shady is typically directed by his left-handed QB in Vick.

Big if, though. I loves me some Pouncey, but that ankle worries me a little. Seems like just about EVERYONE else got injured last season as well - did we ever have the same lineup for more than two weeks in a row? :-/ I think, from what I saw of Gilbert last year, that he has potential and will probably be OK, but like you said, more young talent + solid veteran FA(s) would be amazing.

/knows it probably won't happen
//but a girl can dream, right? :P
