Looks like another Japanese earthquake:

TheJoe03: So is this a big deal or what?

According to this article (new window) a tsunami advisory has been issued. One of the affected areas is Iwate prefecture, which heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami.

2012-03-14 06:16:44 AM
hmm... 50cm = ~ 1.5 ft. Last year's 1000cm = ~39 ft.

I'll take the 6.8 quake for $200, Bob...

So... it's a yearly event over there now?

I'm down on Shikoku Island. Nothing ever happens here. :)

Also, the tsunami warning has been significantly downgraded.

This is being reported as a 6.8 or so, the one last year was up around 9.0 so this is still looking pretty not good for the areas it's projected to affect if there is a tsunami in a little bit but unless there's something wrong with the equipment or reports and this is massively under-judged, it won't be anywhere near as bad as the last one. Or at least I REALLY hope so, my wife has a shiatload of family over there so I don't see myself getting to sleep till I find out enough to know they'll all be ok.

Go to sleep. Nothing to worry about. There have been 6+ quakes almost continuously for the last year up there.

If those didn't get them, this one isn't going to either.

You don't need to run from a small quake, and can't run from a big one.

Yeah just saw the wave already hit according to Reuters, no damage or injuries. It's been a ridiculously stressful day so I just kinda bugged out for a sec till I could get perspective on how bad this one was gonna be in relation. Getting off Fark and going to bed now.

2012-03-14 06:37:20 AM
Bah, stupid tired brain. I meant how bad this quake situation would be in relation to last year's, not the quality of my day.

Directly across from your sinking Japanese Islands is Seattle, one of the few places in the ring of fire that hasn't been hit. Keep your seismic activity to yourselves, m'kay?

The stringent Japanese building codes mean that you almost don't have to get out of bed over a 6.8, sure it's scary, but nothing like what a 6.8 would do in other parts of the world.

Japanese earthquake 6.8 = no damage reported yet.

Christchurch earthquake 6.3 = 16.2 billion in damage (on the low end) and 185 dead.

Actually, USGS has downgraded it to a 6.1. And your point is valid, but also a bit snarky. Christchurch experienced a lot of damage from liquefaction, and many of the buildings that collapsed were damaged in the 7.0 earthquake 5 months earlier.

I haven't been to Japan. I have been to Christchurch (and stayed in the ill-fated Grand Chancellor) so it saddens me what happened to them.

Or, to put it in a perspective we can get our heads around, the 9.0 was 1995 times stronger than the 6.8 and 158 times larger in magnitude. Plate tectonics are a biyotch. I hope the family is safe.

The teenage females' soiled underwear dispensary restocking support system has been brought up to alert status, just in case...

The concern is not the 6.8 itself. It is the 6.8 and 6.1 in close proximity to each other and then the 5.7, 5.4 and another 5.7... They are either:
A.) No big deal, just more of the mag 6ish rumbles that have been happening there for the past year.
B.) Foreshocks for another biggie.

Last year's 9 had several (4) foreshocks in the magnitude 6 range..

With that said, aftershocks from a large earthquake can indeed last for a year or more.

From USGS, these are all in the past 4 hours: (LINK (new window))
5.7 2012/03/14 12:05:05 16.9 NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
5.4 2012/03/14 11:40:19 22.2 OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
5.7 2012/03/14 10:57:41 21.8 OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
6.1 2012/03/14 10:49:24 9.5 OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
6.9 2012/03/14 09:08:37 26.6 OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN

The columns are magnitude, date, time, depth, location
The website has the actual latitude / longitude of the quakes and they have moved southward. If I were in Japan I would be a bit more alert that usual and check my emergency kit / water supply just to be safe. Of course, given the 1yr anniversary was just 3 days ago, I am sure many of the people there have already thought about that.

Was at work when it happened. Several people had the earthquake warning alarm on their phones. It hit 3 seconds later. Only registered as a 3.0 in Tokyo and wasn't that strong, but it lasted over a minute. Business as usual the second it stopped.
