The video still image on the page makes it look like some Action flick where a helicopter flies through a tunnel -_-.

Damn this is sad. So many devastated families and destroyed legacies. Poor kids.

Confabulat: Wow they fly helicopters into tunnels in Switzerland.

Switzerland is hardcore about tunnels, man. Ever seen their Ticket to Ride map?

Though I notice the helicopter is outside the tunnel. I'm not sure a helicopter could actually stay airborne with a ceiling that close.

Did we test for the presence of tramautized American soldiers? You know, spent 5.56 rounds laying around.

Probably bury them back home then right?

Why is this a newsflash? Unless you're related to one of the victims, this has no bearing on anyone's life outside of the local event.

I will never understand peoples' fascination with death.

so who thought it was ok for that wall to just stick out like that without some sort of deflection? taper the concrete, or even a long, angled guard rail might have at least reduced the amount of impact. how sad. :(

Very little traffic, the bus made no contact with any other vehicles, had seatbelts, drivers followed the laws regarding being rested, etc, etc...

Seems pretty obvious it's either driver error or a bus mechanical failure.

Though I'm sure that won't stop the families from trying to sue the Swiss department of transportation.

Hopefully the plane load of American lawyers rushing to the scene will suffer the same fate.

Bob The Nob: so who thought it was ok for that wall to just stick out like that without some sort of deflection?

Assume you are talking about this?

news.bbcimg.co.uk

The coach is removed from the crash scene. It appears to have travelled along the right hand wall of the tunnel and collided head-on with the concrete wall (right) that provides emergency access

I thought the same thing, but then I thought that the wall doesn't exactly look like it had a coach hit it head-on at speed. Doesn't seem to be much damage, so I'm wondering if the coach hit something else?

Still, stupid place to stick a wall if that's what actually happened.

From the looks of the bus in that pic it looks like something went through at window level under the roof (and the roof is still intact at places). That looks...terribly messy. What an awful tragedy.

FTFA: the bus was one of three hired by a Christian group

So will the 24 survivors end up thinking god is awesome because he must have saved them for a special purpose or will they end up thinking god is a fiction and it's time for free love, drugs and booze?

Sad day for them either way.

that's. what makes laughing at them. so great.

reminds me of some school bus crash in -- i dont even remember -- one or more kids killed, others bruised, broken bones -- one kid, with no broken bones: "thank god i didn't get hurt" yeah but god doesn't like your classmates.

Like the tunnel support pillar Princess Diana's car hit. A simple steel barrier would have made the car just slide along it. The car would probably still been driveable and no one would have had a scratch.

Wicked Chinchilla: From the looks of the bus in that pic it looks like something went through at window level under the roof

I agree. There's no way this bus ran head-on into a flat wall:

news.bbcimg.co.uk

Although if you look at this pic and the earlier one of the wall, you'll see the wall curves outwards at the top and the bus seems to have suffered most of its damage at the top corner where the wall would be overhanging, but little on the diagonally opposite corner which would have been out in clear road.

news.bbcimg.co.uk

Looks like it went from 60mph to zero instantly, with the top corner and side of the bus taking the impact.......Holy fark.

/thoughts are with the parents and families. Incredibly tragic. So many poor kids killed and scarred for life
//and while we're getting all smug about God, perhaps we should remember that those kids wouldn't have had any choice about which religion they were brought up with, or which school they went to
///atheist and parent
////would like to see a little restraint in the thread, but isn't banking on it.....

it's a tragedy, and it boils down to human error; the driver might have even just been texting, drifted into a pillar...who puts pillars in a tunnel :/
