They weren't advertising on Rush already?

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Well, all aboard the crazy train.

Hm. Don't count your Shellys before they've hatched.

I propose a gentlemen's bet with you, Weav. I think Rush will survive this. Name the terms.

Limbaugh has lost ALL his national advertisers. I don't see how much longer he can continue...

I'm not suggesting anything changing hands, just a gentlemens bet on how long he will last.

To that end, I will bet you that by the end of this month this has largely blown over and forgotten.

Define "survive." I mean, I'm 60% sure he will live through it, though death by aneurysm, heart attack or drug overdose are all on the table. If you mean "keep his radio show"... well, that's a tough one. I mean, he has such a loyal following, but they're fairly close, in my opinion, to the rabid Howard Stern fans that kept him on satellite radio even after he was off of FM. I'm about 85% for him ending up on internet or satellite only by six months from now.

got me. there's a lot of unknowns in this little passion play. we don't know the details of Rush's contract with clear channel, we aren't sure if Premiere is knocking Rush around behind the scenes and/or off air. we don't know if Rush has other revenue streams or not, or the details of how he's currently funding his show.

No, I think Rush is going to be dealing with the consequences of this mess for the next couple/few months. will he talk about it in public? hells no...but will it kick his ass? yup.

I just don't know how much damage the loss of all his national sponsors is going to do to him. I've never heard of that happening to a major show.

timujin: ...drug overdose....

Man I don't know. Did you read how many oxys (oxies?) he was popping at one point? I don't think the pharmaceutical industry could supply enough for him to OD. He could change drugs, sure but it seems like he would have done that already by now.

2012-03-13 06:16:23 PM
Ok, as in still on the air, still being distributed by premiere, with the story basically no longer in the news cycle by april 1.

Personally, my gut feeling is that he will survive by taking the same route that Beck did, but it will play out next year, since he already has a contract through then with Clear Channel.

It'd be pretty funny (but a waste of funds) if the DNC or Obama 2012 started advertising on Rush's show.

Could be. We probably won't know for sure until it comes for contract renewal time with CC.

It'd be nice if even a big chunk of them were, though.

I think it might come down to money. If Rush starts costing CC more money than he brings in, then he's in trouble. If Huckabee proves a better option than Rush (and is more affordable, less asshole-ish) then Limbaugh is done. they'll find a loophole in his contract and that'll be it.

Meh.. Rush will be fine. His listener base is fanatical in support. The only thing this does is get him talked about in a few news cycles. There is no such thing as going over the line for a right winger, especially Rush

He personally will be fine (until his heart explodes or he overdoses, that is).

The question is whether or not his CC radio show will continue. He undoubtedly can continue if he goes the Beck route.

That would, however, result in a significantly reduced amount of media attention and customer base exposure. As an example, Beck is still around, but his general media presence is vastly smaller than it was when he was on FNC.

I'd wager that Rush's listener base would shrink even more, given the advanced age of his demographic.

Well it made me listen to him for the first time when I watched the clip of what he said about the Fluke girl. A golden microphone? Really?

He does have an audience that is up there in years but some of them (boomers especially) are tech savvy enough to listen to him on the intarwebs or podcasts. Having said that, I don't foresee CC dropping him over this. In a week or so, he'll be the victim (maybe sooner since apparently some people are calling for the FCC to ban him)

I'm bookmarking these for later.

/for my money, Rush will be dropped by several more stations (especially when they have Huckabee's new show to turn to) and will eventually get the can.

Limbaugh's controversial comments on Sandra Fluke's personal life and testimony have cost him over 140 sponsors and forced Premiere Radio Networks to suspend national ads for at least two weeks.

Everything's fine. Just fine. No worries at having to eat 2 weeks worth of advertising. When I quit my job at Clear Channel in 2006 we had to ask for pens and paper, which were stored in a locked cabinet. The company was so cheap they refused to provide kleenex.

I'm sure this isn't troubling the bean counters at all.

They deserve each other.

I've never heard of this site before, but I would be shocked if ANYONE at Clear Channel, EIB, whatever other entities put this walrus on the air are in any way seriously considering letting the WBC sponsor it. I'm not fan of the blimp, but I mean come in, he IS a businessman, and that would be about the stupidest thing in the world to give any real thought to from a business perspective.

I prefer Sporkymandias:

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said-- "Two vast and tineless forks of stone
Stand near the desert (cart)... Near them, on the sand
Half sunk, a bowl-less spoon there lies, whose handle
And plastic lip, and smear of cold lentil soup,
Tell that its sculptor well those utensils knew
Which yet survive, stamped out in plastic thousands,
The hand that which held them and the heart they fed;

And on the serving cart, these words appear:
My name is Sporkymandias, Spoon of Spoons and Fork of Forks,
Look on my Sporks, ye hungry and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and empty fast-food tables stretch far away.

You think Limbaugh will be able to refrain from being an asshole for an entire month? Becuase that's pretty much the only way this gets blown over.

I'm confused...what is westborough selling? How do they...advertise? Would rush just be getting paid very explicitly for hating on groups of people, or...?

Landover Baptist Church would be the perfect sponsor for him, I think.

Is "Hundred Blackout" a reputable source?

Also, I heard Hitler was going to advertise on Rush's show.

2012-03-13 08:00:53 PM
Rush just had his "A Face in the Crowd" moment. Sure he will stay on the radio but it'll be in obscure, paranoiac markets. Huckaby is actually an entertaining person who could get a crossover audience. But idiots need their refuge and Limbaugh has been it for so many years.

2012-03-13 08:01:38 PM
Wasn't the owner of LifeLock sued or in legal trouble for his company's inability to protect one's identity? I'm too lazy to look it up.

IamAwake: I'm confused...what is westborough selling?

Manure, I would assume.

2012-03-13 08:02:01 PM
No way. I am not buying it. My bet is that someone claiming to be with the Westboro Baptist Church contacted them, but I seriously doubt someone really did.

Either that or someone is lying about being contacted. I dont believe Westboro Baptist Church would call to advertise-- for what? As if they dont have enough publicity already. Even if someone did, why would anyone inside Clear Channel announce it? That cant possibly be good for Limbaugh to to be cast in the light that only the WBC would do business with him- therefore not good for Clear Channel.

Sounds like horsechit

2012-03-13 08:02:59 PM

I wish nothing but the best for Limbaugh and his show, because he makes the conservative right look that much crazier. He should have never apologized either.

I bet Obama wins the Electoral College over the eventual GOP candidate by a 2 to 1 ratio.
