Christopher Cross' "Ride Like the Wind" is great and all, but shouldn't "Sailing" have been the more obvious choice???

If I may add a modern track, I think Vampire Weekend's "Giving up the Gun" qualifies as yacht rock. I mean, those Ivy League twerps wear deck shoes and everything!

/has the sudden urge to play "Sweet Freedom" in the office.

... In other words; "shiat".

"Reelin' In the Years" would not have been my Steely Dan choice for a list like that. "Deacon Blues" should've been number one by a mile.

Yeah, that list was worthless without Sailing and Sail Away in the top 2.

I was on a sailboat in the early 80's and remember hearing "True" by Spandau Ballet. Riding around Lake St. Clair, looking at freighters.

No "Sailing"???

I mean I can't stand the song, but it swept the 1981 Grammys. Album, Song, Record and New Artist of the year.

FTFA:

"Legend has it that Steve Pocaro wrote this (Rosanna) to woo Patricia Arquette. "

That make sense (rolls eyes). Whenever I want to get a girl, I write a song about her sister.

Please.

I would've gone with "Peg"... but I suppose the list already had enough McDonald.

That was hi-freaking-larious.

I don't know what "Yacht Rock" is, but if "I'm on a Boat" isn't in the top 10, I think the genre needs a new name.

No Sloop John B? And what about the kings of yacht rock, Air Supply?

HKWolf: I was on a sailboat in the early 80's and remember hearing "True" by Spandau Ballet. Riding around Lake St. Clair, looking at freighters.

"Gold" and "I'll Fly For You" are actually much better songs, plus the latter has my favorite cheesy lyric of all time:

I'm just an average boy
You're more than average, girl
And when you sing to me that shooby-doo you do so well
Don't you know that when I'm under you I'm overjoyed...

You just don't get any cheesier than that. Although I admit that some of the songs from TFA and the Wikipedia page someone linked above do give it a run for its money.

2012-03-13 03:55:32 PM
Thew 1% wants an official soundtrack. They can have "Rosanna" but they better not touch "Africa" or else I'm-a cut them with the edge of a mint-fresh hundred dollar bill. A lot.

/these people think "Born in the USA" is a patriotic song
//they can have all the Kenny Loggins they want, stay away from the classic rock!
///these poseurs would claim the Beatles as Yacht Rock if we let them

As a raghauler of long experience, "Southern Cross" is #1.

/This list is crap.

"Ahoy polloi ... where'd you get that outfit, a scotch ad?"

Pretty much the whole Caddyshack soundtrack is yacht music. Journey's Any Way You Want It is like hybrid golf/yacht rock.

Throw in some YES for the yacht guys that think prog rock is only listened to by geniuses and you have a complete genre.

2012-03-13 05:02:59 PM
Kinda surprised "Southern Cross" by Crosby, Stills, & Nash wasn't on the list...

I concur. He didn't just turn them into "yacht rock", but "second-rate cruise ship lounge rock"

Yacht Rock? Is it 2004 again?

The whole Yacht Rock movement egregiously overlooks the work of perhaps the smoothest, most international of such artists... Gino Vannelli. His big hit "I Just Wanna Stop" is the very definition of the genre, showing up on a compilation of French Riviera "jazz". It doesn't get much yachtier than the Riviera, where if you don't have a yacht, they'll basically throw you in jail for vagrancy.

/no, i'm not canadian
