"About 15 seconds later, I heard a hard tap on the driver's side window and saw a cop tapping DJ's window with a flashlight,'' Hinds allegedly said. "DJ pulled off went around the bend and going at a decent speed. I looked down for a second and when I looked up I saw what looked like a person in front of the car that appeared that he had his hands up together and then I saw two to three holes in the front windshield," he said.

"I didn't see out the front because the front window had condensation. I have no idea why DJ didn't stop," he said.

Make up your mind.

I work around the corner from where it happened. Most people in town believe Gagnon is lying.

He was (allegedly) one of those cops that was looking for action, and this place is just not very action packed.

That said, the driver was apparently drunk, so that doesn't help.

Because my first thought when a cop walks up and taps on my window is to take off "around the bend and going at a decent speed." And then run into a cop/person standing in the road.

How bout you crack the window and ask what he wants?

There is a whole lot of missing information from this statement to make up your mind. What's a "decent speed"? Had the shots already been fired when the passenger looked up? Was the officer in front of DJ when he left or did the officer jump in front? How much condensation was there on the drivers side?

Every single sentence of this witness leaves open at least one question. Don't make up your mind. Let more evidence be heard.

If a police officer taps on your window with a flashlight, that does not mean you should drive off without seeing what he wants from you. Unfortunately, he may just want your life. Catch-.22? But seriously, never leave a cop before he says you can.

I can't imagine what would have happened to me under a similar scenario if I had followed the signal the MP gave me.

I took a civilian friend through Fort Richardson to get to Elmendorf AFB. They scanned his ID at the gate and let us go on our way but a few minutes driving through the fort and that all changed. An MP came up on us, went in front of me, flipped on his lights and then slammed on his brakes. He got out of his vehicle and waved us to go on but I didn't know what the hell was going on so I just sat there and waited for him to come over. Within seconds a couple more cruisers show up and the MP came to ask me to pull over and step out of the vehicle. He pulled me aside and asked me if I knew my friend very well. I said yes, so they started grilling me about him. Within the next few minutes every farking MP on the fort had surrounded my car; guns drawn. Turns out my passenger/good friend popped in the system as having a warrant out for 2nd degree murder. Turns out those ID scanners only run checks based on your first and last name but the MPs have to search manually with your SSN to find out if it is really correct. (in this case the system failed since he had the same name as a murderer)

How does shiat escalate from, "please move your illegally parked car", to "shoot his ass! SWARM!!"

Its like I've said previously, everthing is legal where the police do not patrol. If these guys were in Buttfark, Iowa there probably wouldn't have been 5 police cars sitting outside of a resturant. But, because they were there to "stop crime" a guy was executed for a parking violation. These are the same situations that get men police records. A few guys minding their business get hassled, leading to someone getting charged with talking back, or something. Then, Farkers run into threads with their crime statistics to show how evil and predisposed to crime some people are.

Typical cop misdirection in order to work in some trigger time.

They're trained to shout conflicting orders ala "Stop, don't move, get on the ground" so they can get away with murder when the suspect does not both hold perfectly still and get on the pavement.

This. Apparently this instructional video still needs more circulation: How not to get your ass kicked by the police (new window)

I think ignoring the officer and booking it around the corner violates both the, "If an officer approaches your car, be polite," and, "If the police have to come and get you, they're bringing an ass kicking with them," points.

I specifically left race out it. I did not say that him being black played a part in the cops decision to shoot. I'm talking about the police presence in urban vs. rural or suburban communities. A lot of incidents are caused by the police in the area, not the lack of them. Then I said that Farkers use these incidents to beef up their idiotic arguments. The reading part you have down. The comprehension...

Giltric: In before private prisons derp.............

I recently started watching QI (Quite Interesting). One of the stats they had in season four is the fact that young blacks in "The worst parts of America" such as the Ghetto have an increased life span if they go to prison instead of trying to make it on the streets. So this draws the conclusion that private prisons are actually put in place to humanely deal with young blacks.

I'm pretty sure we have the technology to create some sort of head/glasses/shirt mounted camera that has a full 24 hour battery life and storage capacity to capture an officers entire shift on camera.

A public service job like this where its often my word vs their word, this would make a world of difference. If your shifts video mysteriously disappears or is tampered with you lose your job, pension, benefits, etc and are automatically assumed to be up to something shady.

If you drive off after a cop knocks on your window, you are a dumb ass. If you try to run over a cop... I'd fully understand if the cop unloads on you.

If you try to drive with a fog covered window, if you can't see the cop in front of you, it's your own damn fault.

Either way, I wasn't there - but we really need micromini recorders on public servants these days.

If the officer believed that his life was in danger, then I agree that lethal force may have been neccesary. Yomoxu: Is it just me or have cops become more trigger happy?

The results trend towards the behavior of the citizenry. We've become dumbed down as a society, and manner and civility have left the building. No one can be told they are wrong in anything anymore, so the result is ZERO respect for authority. Factor into that that trust between authority and a certain segment of citizenry borders on ZERO, so no matter what the law says, that segment of citizenry ignores it.

So we then have a society that has ZERO morals, and ZERO idea of what truth is anymore. People don't know the difference between right and wrong anymore, only when someone enters their personal zone and have violated it. That is ultimately the only unspoken truth in society anymore - you are alright to do whatever you want to yourself, as long as you don't enter someone else's personal zone.

The incident here revolves around all of the above. The police violated the personal zone of the drivers, and as such, cannot be told they are wrong with anything, especially if they were blasting loud music and acting like fools.

All of this aside, the police don't knock on your window just to say hi. They knock when they want to talk to you. If you ignore them, they tend to get pissed off. If you run them over, they tend to try and defend themselves. So going back to the OP's question, the police are not more trigger happy, society has become more uncooperative and lawless. Thugs from the "hood" who ignore basic instructions because they feel violated before even being asked a simple question tend to spark confrontation that ends up as a tragedy here.

And as a side benefit to the ensuing chaos in our society, everyone is a victim, and will lawyer up to make being a cop, public official, or any other type of law enforcement authority a job from hell.

How did we get here? Lack of discipline by fathers. Half of children are now born to unwed mothers, and they probably don't know who the father is, if he is even in the picture at all. So these kids are never disciplined, and never learn structure in society. This is not even a racial issue anymore, as white folks are just as guilty as black folks as not having any responsibility with impregnating their "baby momma". Yeah, I'm talking to you all you rednecks from Alabama who think it's cool to get drunk, and then wake up Monday morning with a hangover and severe stomach ache that won't go away for nine months.

Forrest Gump is a genius when he said, "Stupid is as stupid does".

But blame the cops? No - I blame your absentee "baby daddy".

2012-03-13 11:39:14 AM
I won't assume the driver screwed up on purpose. I think he pulled off to appease the cop at the window, however didn't see the cop standing in front of him. He was shot because it has been established that driving at or hitting a cop with a car is considered deadly force and can be met with the same. The passenger really does not help here. I doubt condensation was on the windshield. Most likely the windshield was already damaged by the bullets. The cop standing in front of a vehicle like that shows a real lack of logic. You want the car to move and so the logical thing to do is stand in front of it. I bet this cop will continue to do stupid stuff like this till someone goes to jail for killing him. Maybe a train operator. I don't blame the other officers.

There are also conflicting statements by the police, too. Specifically, I'm wondering whether the four shots were fired before the car hit him, or after he was hit - and if it was after, like they claim, how slow was the car going that it could hit him and he'd be uninjured enough and stable enough to fire four shots before sliding off the hood.

Sounds to me like either he shot the guy while standing in front of the car, resulting in the driver being unable to stop, or the car was going slowly and he shot him from on top the hood.

the guy ignored a police officer and then sped off towards another police officer. That was just plain stupid. He was using deadly force against a cop and he got shot for it.

Patrolling or not patrolling has nothing to do with this.

If you call ignoring a cop, then taking off right at another cop "just minding your business", you have a problem.

lack of warmth: The cop standing in front of a vehicle like that shows a real lack of logic. You want the car to move and so the logical thing to do is stand in front of it.

You realize the cop that tapped on the window, and the one that stood in front are two different cops right?

Cop1 taps on the window
Car takes off instead of talking to him, is now considered fleeing
Cop2 attempts to stop the car after it's already left and gone around a corner. Driver ignores/doesn't see SECOND cop as well.
Cop2 shoots at driver.

Basically, at the point cop2 stood in front of the car, it was no longer a matter of wanting the car to move. It was already moving. It was a matter of stopping a driver who ignored and fled from the police.

A few guys minding their business get hassled, leading to someone getting charged with talking back, or something. Then, Farkers run into threads with their crime statistics to show how evil and predisposed to crime some people are.

I'm the first person to point a finger at the cops pigs, but I'm not so sure I can do so in this instance. If a cop taps on your car window, you open it up and find out what he wants. You don't just speed away.

Nofun: "DJ pulled off went around the bend and going at a decent speed. I looked down for a second and when I looked up I saw what looked like a person in front of the car that appeared that he had his hands up together and then I saw two to three holes in the front windshield"

Sounds like this dude pealed out and was heading for a cop. Not really any evidence though to draw conclusions about whether deadly force was necessary.

/Back to your regularly scheduled cop hate.

Sounds like assault with a deadly weapon, to wit a motor vehicle.

Yeah, that's what it looks like to me, also. Another case of trying to get away, not realizing that if you drive at a cop he's probably going to shoot rather than jump out of the way. (A civilian in stand-your-ground states has the same option.)
