Sorry troops coming home from Iraq, don't get too comfortable.

The GOP wants to throw your lives away and rip you from your well deserved time at home with your families because it helps their campaign rhetoric.

WTF is wrong with these people?

Thousands of lives, 10 years, and trillions wasted has taught them nothing?

The GOP hates the military. And Freedom. And Independence.

Iran would make Iraq and Afghanistan combined look like an absolute picnic. This isn't Libya where the locals where pleading for our help and we gave them air support, or Syria where the locals are again pleading for our help but we're acting like we can't hear them. This is just saber rattling that's reached derp levels because all three countries involved (US, Iran and Isreal) are nearing elections and don't want to back down.

I always love the fact that Republicans sure love to put our soldiers in harms way and then cut their benefits when they come back.

And the chickensh*ts that are always beating the drum of war.

If you want to go fight Iran, Mitch McConnell- raise a volunteer militia and lead them yourself onto the battlefield. I'm sure a lot of your GOP cohorts would love to join you.

Get back to me when they pay for the last two wars with raises in taxes. Until then they should STFU.

Iraq and Afghanistan cost about $2T maybe, not sure but I would expect Iran to be three times that much. Let's say $6T. Through the last two wars, the wealth gap between the poor/middle class and the rich has increased by leaps and bounds.

The rich didn't pay in coin or blood for the last two wars. When they can scrape together $8T in taxes (let's say). They can pretend to have an opinion on Iran.

2012-03-13 12:33:45 PM
I have an idea: when Congress approves a war, each member of Congress (the House and the Senate) must willingly have all immediate family members - siblings, spouses, children, etc - aged 18-35 to be enlisted in the US. Army and assigned to combat duty. No excuses, no exceptions.

If the cause is just, this should be no problem.

Nadie_AZ: The GOP hates the military. And Freedom. And Independence.

My wife has this argument with one of her friends, whose husband is on his (at least) 3rd visit to Iraq as a medic. She doesn't understand that just because the GOP parades around their love for the military, it doesn't mean that they actually give f*ck all about the soldiers.

Obama said we should knock of the saber rattling. Of course McConnell's going to ramp it up.

They did try to cut funding to NPR. That should cover it, right?

This is about the only way the Republicans can try to make Obama look weak on national defense. Because, after all, he is the guy who killed Obama and ended the war in Iraq. So this is all about them being about to say "FARTBAMA WANTS IRAN TO GET A NUKE!!!"

Pathetic.

Even the ones that voted no? Because if that's the case, I think you'd have your war right there on the floor because the ones voting no are basically going to choke the life out of the ones that vote yes.

Doesn't it get tiring to feel the need to always pick fights? I mean, just maintaining the level of vitriol needed to be ready for that has to take a toll. We should probably think of switching to Despotism or some civic with less war weariness if we expect to keep this up.

Cat With Two Heads: Is it possible for Congress to declare war against the wishes of the President?

I don't see why not, but it wouldn't be much of a war when the CIC just orders the troops to stay home and chill the fark out.

Cat With Two Heads: Is it possible for Congress to declare war against the wishes of the President?

The Congress is the only governmental body that is allowed to declare war. It doesn't mean that the President has to prosecute the war, though.

2012-03-13 02:24:05 PM
Is there any precedent for this? I really can't think of a situation in American history where the President has opposed military action, the Joint Chiefs have all recommended against military action, and Congress has pushed for military action.

Hell, some experts are saying that the chest beating from our side is about all Iran has been able to cling to for popular support as the sanctions are sapping what little goodwill the Iranian government is able to get.

Great idea, Mitch. Let's get more of our guys killed, because Israel snapped its fingers at us.

If Israel wants a war, let them fight it themselves. If they can't or won't do that, tell them to sit the fark down and shut the fark up.

I'm asking if he would be forced to by Congress. I really doubt this could happen, as we haven't officially declared war since what, WWII? It obviously wouldn't be a real war declaration, just another Authorization for Use of Military Force, but is the President obliged to use that military force?

Obama himself would probably be the best person to answer.

Let's declare war and then just sit in our territory with tons of troops. Iran will sue for peace in like 5 turns, and probably give us a few cities (which we can then sell to someone else).

I'd pay money to hear Obama saying something like this in a debate against his opponent. Especially if he gets a little angry while saying it. The more the GOP rings this bell, the more they paint themselves as the Party of Constant War Since 2001.

This from an article from 2007 but I did find it interesting...

The people of Iran are probably the most pro-Western in the world, though that will not stop them fighting like hell if we are foolish enough to attack them. Not that they will do so with nuclear weapons any time soon. Iran is rather bad at grand projects. Its sole nuclear power station has never produced a watt of electricity in more than three decades, the capital's TV tower is unfinished after 20 years of work and Tehran's airport took 30 years to build

Iraq cost more than a trillion dollars, and by comparison, it would be an appetizer compared to Iran.

But this is the party of fiscal conservatism.
