While I have nothing against the rich, this asshat need a swift kick to the balls. What I don't understand is the Government has told him he has to demolish the house and put the land back the way it was. It has been two years and he hasn't complied. Is the court incapable of hiring a bulldozer and tearing it down themselves? If the rich coont won't follow the court orders, how about the court show him who is in charge?

You obviously don't understand how American Oligarchies[tm] work.

The governments exist to serve their masters while perpetrating the illusion of neutrality and justice to the commoners.

I would think they would feel more at home building their mansions on this (new window) tropical island... You know, to be near their relatives. I'd think Brazilians wouldn't mind this island being demolished in favor of a millionaire's prison village.

Don't get me wrong. I don't like Communism, but, I get how the whole thing got started. I suppose it's not much different from the American revolution, or the British or the French. A bunch of rich people, pushing around middle class and poor people, finally got steam rolled. After anywhere from 10 to 100 years, the pendulum swings back the other way, the rich take over again, treat the middle class and poor like shiat, tension builds and off we go again. Kind of like an earthquake.
I see the tension building (at least on the news) in Ontario, across Canada, in the destitution of some places in the U.S. and across the globe. It's only a matter of time. 1 to 20 years at the most, and we'll see another revolution. People are tired of the rich acting like assholes while they feel marginalized and ignored. And there's a hell of a lot more poor and middle class than rich.

In the civilised world, we have rules that limit what rich guys can get away with. In order to get around this, rich guys become LIBERALS and start making spurious moral arguments for why the law should be changed... always in a way that benefits them personally.

How, exactly, are they supposed to get said bulldozer out to the site? The only practical way to demolish that place is (a) piece-by-piece or (b) aerial bombing.

They typically don't deny they've harmed the environment and instead pledge to undo the damage. After that, they take no action.

They learned that trick from oil companies I bet. Or vice versa. They're all in cahoots I tell you.

The Government (any Government) by nature is designed to serve the wealthy and powerful (in the case of the US, it's the corporations they call 'master')

The ultra wealthy are mostly sociopaths, and this kind of behavior is not uncommon. Mega-bucks Wall St currency trader, Andrew Krieger, decided that he wanted to expand his multimillion dollar New Jersey estate a few years back. He did this by fencing off and clear cutting several acres of state park land next to his house.

Just last month millionaire, Jay Patel, decided that he didn't like his neighbor's trees, so he hired a crew to clear cut the neighbor's property.

The rich are rich because if they see something they want, they take it.

Bullets are cheap. And you can't take your wealth with you. The rich are under the delusion that they are above the law, and safe from harm. History shows otherwise.

Isn't this how the British monarchy got started? Rich guys built palaces in beautiful forrests, and hired armed guards to keep the peasants off "their" land. After a generation or two, they claimed it as their "ancestral home".

See, this might not just be multiple cases of asshat sociopaths using wealth and power to steal fabulous, unspoiled land from the people - we could be witnessing the birth of the Brazilian monarchy!

Resende, 65, broke the rules that gave him the right to occupy the land on a nature preserve, not to build a large home, Brazilian federal judges found.

So it's ok to build there but he made it too big. The poor sure like splitting hairs.

=============================

Happens in Jersey all the time. The law is clear: The land next to tidal waterways belongs to the public. There are dozens of shore communities in Jersey where the rich have fenced off the beaches. The real interesting thing is that those very same "private" beaches are maintained with federal and state tax dollars.

The rich are the truly the most evolved of human beings.

Maybe not, the gap between rich and poor in Brazil is actually narrowing as it widens here in the U.S. Not saying this guy isn't an asshole (he is), but if the numbers are correct Brazil is actually doing a better job at narrowing the wealth gap than we are.

Why thank you, I rather liked that myself.

P.S., I don't truly believe it was a backpedal. He did say "governments" after all. I was just having a bit of a snark for giggles. Quite frankly, I expected to catch a little flack for my comment rather than support.

cmb53208,
You have a point - the wealth gap here in the US is huge - and getting bigger. I joke about the rise of a new royalty, but I truely wonder. The rich might just be the new royals.

MisterBill,
True, but royals in that day lived in an agrarian society. They needed manpower to tend the fields. Modern society is no longer agrarian, and the new royals mostly tend to avoid the peasant classes.

Ironically, then as now, there are peasants who will vigorously defend the rich/royals as a "superior" class of people who are entitled to more privildge and rights than the rest of us. Also, then as now, the rich/royals will laugh at these people - they don't need more sycophants.
