Flimsy association

From the study:

Several lines of evidence support a role for infectious agents in the development of prostate cancer (PCa). In particular, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been implicated in PCa etiology, and studies have found that the risk of acquiring a STI can be reduced with circumcision. Therefore, circumcision may reduce PCa risk.

yeah.. it can lower it.. by a fraction of a fraction of a percent... and most of those studies don't replicate in first world countries.

Grasping at straws in the worst way.

The only reason these "studies" are perceived as valid by anyone is because our (North American) culture can't shake the unfounded, puritan belief that the foreskin (i.e. sexual pleasure) is "dirty" from the backs of our minds.

Otherwise, articles like these would make just about as much sense as "this just in: eyelid removal can reduce the risk of brain tumors by 15%"

I call bullshait. Correlation does not equal causation.

That said, my mom knows a guy who had some sort of infection down there and had to get the operation done when he was older. Our doctor recommended right after I was born. (1991, so not that long ago frankly.) Not sure if there are actual benefits or if it's horseshait, and I don't really care either. It was done, and the frequency I whack off is proof that it still works fine. Just glad there was no risk of having to get it done when I was 16 or something, this way I don't remember it.

I struggled mightily with the decision on whether or not to get my son circumcised. My sister's in the health care field and described, fairly graphically, what can happen to old men who were unable to clean themselves properly with resultant infections that are.....grim.

Sorry, kid.

I dunno about prostate cancer, but the correlation between circumcision and lack of penile cancer is pretty striking.

I know a guy that got gangrene in his arm when he was older (glider accident that went a bit awry). My son still has both arms.

I do NOT want my daughter circumcised (she is not and never will be)
I had to argue with staff to not do the same to my son (he is not and never will be)

"pull it back and wash it in that modern luxury we call a shower, and use that other modern marvel we call a towel, we dont live in the bronze age deserts we live in British Columbia, we have this thing called water USE it or I'll get the end of your dick cut off and you don't get to eat pork for a year !!!, don't MAKE me take your PS3 off you"

I don't know why you guys get so upset about circumcision. It's not like it's going to grow back.

Now, if you want to talk about little boys not getting it done in the future, that's fine by me. But really, boys: It ain't coming back. Just be happy with what you've got; it's usually adequate for the task at hand. Or in hand. Or whatever.

if this is true. I suppose that ends the circumcision argument. I expect the loudest people who are anti-circumcision to be the loudest people in this thread either denying the data, it's conclusions, it's strength, the study, or outright denying the possibility of a risk reduction.

It's funny how all these scare stories about having to get it done later, or penis cancer or some other stuff come out in these threads.
I've never heard of these things being much of a problem in the UK or other parts of Europe, where circumcision is rare.

May just not be the sort of thing people talk about though.

There

Britney Spear's Speculum: Alright, pro-nippers. You are right. A Cochran study says that circumcision decreases HIV transmission (new window)

I wouldn't take those studies seriously. The newly circumcised males "with a lower incidence rate" had a required recovery period during which they could not have sex. The studies were then terminated early, shortly after the recovery period was over - a deliberate manipulation of data. [link].

Every credible study has shown no link between circumcision and disease transmission. Or circumcision and penile cancer, for that matter. But unsurprisingly, the group that owns the patent on the little circumcision tool is more than happy to comission some "studies" to indicate otherwise.

The next time I'm sitting drunk in the bar I know I'm going to turn to whomever's next to me and say "Yeah, buddy, I got the dick cancer bad. It looks like a week old banana and the doc say I'll just have a tube into a bag instead of Mr. Whang. How can I fulfill some sweet lass with a tube and a bag? This ain't a German porn movie. Oh, if only I had been circumcised as a baby! Woe! Woe is me!"

Then I'll return to my drink and cry a bit until they move to another stool 'cause i hate sitting next to people in bars. Farkin' people....
