I find it somewhat disturbing that after all my well thought out posts in regards to the political climate in Canada that the only smart vote I got includes the word "skinnyhead".

I once met Mr Harper at an airport. When he asked me if I was going to vote for his party (it was a long time ago; I can't remember if he was still in his Reform party days or if it was already Conservative party, but no matter since it's pretty much all the same) I told him, with a smile and a handshake, that voting for him would be my first action immediately after undergoing a lobotomy. I got the impression he didn't appreciate...

Btw, the one thing that almost never gets mentioned is that Harper and much of his entourage are all one flavour or another of evangelical Christian. They have a very black and white view of right and wrong. Our justice minister, for example, is a creationist who does not trust experts to advise him in his policies, but would rather rely on his personal hunches.

I truly hate what these ignorant, backward-thinking neanderthals are doing to my country.

untaken_name: gh0strid3r: Pardon me for not using dictionary-perfect terminology. Can you look a little deeper into what I'm trying to say rather than play word games?

It's easier for people to understand what you're trying to say when you use the dictionary definitions of words. When you make up definitions for words, that works against people being able to understand what you are trying to say. Are you trying to say that refusing to obey a law can only be a refusal to do something, not a refusal to refrain from doing something? I want to know what you're trying to say, but it wasn't clear from your post.

Understood.... and I agree. That's why I stuck around and tried to correct my point. I even stayed civil in the face of childishness.

Unsung_Hero: I hate Stephen Harper. The guy is a religious whackjob, and effectively evil. Under his party, I expect my rights to be slowly erroded away until I'm in a police state with a mandatory religion.

The opposition, for reasons that make me wonder if they worship Cthulu, have Bob Rae as their leader. The man who single-handedly tanked Ontario's economy due to reality smacking him right in the socialist dogma.

So, do I vote for the guy who wants me to accept Christ and a cop's boot on my neck, or the guy who will likely ensure I can't pay my mortgage or put food on my table?

As a USian who already has folks like Harper running half his country and most of his State Houses, let me just say this: Go With the Dumb Guy. Even when we try to change it down here we end up with guys like Obama who aren't much better. Stop it before it's too late. Come on Canada; we need you to be cool. You are our hat dammit! OUR HAAAAAAAaaaatttttt!!!!

It actually is. It is called civil disobedience and it is a real way to get bad laws overturned.

That's not what civil disobedience is. Civil disobedience is a lack of response to a legal mandate. It is not actively participating in illegal activity.

No, it really isn't.

Yes, it really is.

No, it really isn't, not by any accepted definition or metric.

There is no absolute definition, but civil disobedience is an act of publicly violating a statute with the intention of forcing a confrontation with authorities. Breaking the law while hiding from the authorities and hoping you don't get caught doesn't qualify.

No, disobedience is active, not passive.

Ok, you're still not getting it. Let me put it this way...

Example: a person who publicly refuses to pay taxes in order to protest tax laws without hiding his actions is committing civil disobedience. But a person who doesn't pay taxes and hides that fact is just committing tax fraud.

A person who publicly refuses to pay taxes is actively doing something. So is the person that hides income.

But only one is doing so with the intention of forcing a confrontation.

The NDP is not led by Bob Rae. If you mean the Liberals... Well, they're not the opposition, are they? Furthermore, if you actually had any awareness of history you would know that what screwed Rae up was running as NDP and then trying to govern like a Liberal.

No, what screwed Bob Rae up was reality impairing his ability to effect policy without economic impact.

After that epic fail, rewarding him with anything other than a seat on the local school board was a mistake.

There can be no defending incompetence in such a critical job, and certainly second chances after an epic failure are questionable.

Bob Rae couldn't get a vote out of anyone over 35 in Ontario. That means you can't win nationally. Any party with him as a candidate, nevermind as a leader, must want to fail.

You completely missed my point.

Nope, not at all. "It's the law" is not a defense for stupid laws.

And a law being stupid is not a defense for breaking it. My statement had nothing to do with the degree of the punishment or whether it's fair.

My point was... people get all upset whenever they hear about ANY type of punishment for breaking drug laws involving marijuana. Well, if you break the law and get caught, don't be surprised if you get punished. It doesn't matter if you agree with a law or not, you don't get to choose which ones you obey. I don't think the intersection at the end of my block should be a 4-way stop, but I don't get to run the stop sign just because I don't agree with it. If you don't agree with a law, work to get it changed. Don't just ignore it and get upset with the way it's enforced.

I remember how shrill and sanctimonious the opposition got when Mulroney was in power, so I'm really not surprised by the amount of sheer frothy vitriolic rage the opposition is showing thus far during Harper's majority. Maybe the Liberals need another "Rat Pack" with a younger Sheila Copps shrieking like banshees through the House.

I'm really trying to be outraged by what they're saying these days but all I can hear is "I'M GOING TO SCREAM AND YELL MY HEAD OFF AND ACT REALLY CHILDISH UNTIL CANADIANS CHANGE THEIR MINDS ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT THEY RECENTLY VOTED IN!"

Call me when Harper starts acting like an actual fascist instead of the centre-right politician he's currently being and has been since 2003.

Mandatory sentencing is a terrible, mean-spirited joke, and frankly, one of its major outcomes will be encouraging whatever it is Canada has for a prosecutor to lie to whatever it is Canada has for a jury. Prosecutors in the US lie through their teeth in regards to sentencing, and more often than not the result is juries who think they're being lenient and fair handing down verdicts that no one can ever climb out from under. And trust me, these might sound good when you're thinking about them being used against the worst examples of the kinds of criminals they're meant to cover, but they'll be used against far, far more people than the worst offenders. They'll be used against people found in possession of insignificant amounts of restricted substances. They'll be used against people who import porn comics from Japan. They'll be used against kids who, unknowingly, drive a friend home who is carrying. They'll be used against minors who fool around or send each other nudie pics. The point of these laws is to take any possibility of consideration and judgement out of the legal system. We started passing them in the 80s in the US, and within 20 years our prisons were over-flowing. They are terrible; you don't want them; all they'll lead to is worse and worse laws.

Luckily, it also gives them heart-attacks before the age of 50.

It does, eh? Care to provide any evidence for that assertion? I hear it also turns people into homicidal maniacs and even leads white women to fornication with coloreds, too.

btw, the heart attack thing was about right-wing radio. Maybe that wasn't obvious.

Hope you also remember what happened to Mr. Mulroney. Two seats (PM Campbell, anyone?) and his party is now history.

It's a shame, really. I voted Progressive Conservative and I miss the party. It's Lyin' Brian's fault that Joe Clarke's Progressive Conservatives have been replaced by Harper's Regressive Conservatives (aka: Reform Party)

Nope. Don't you recall? They conned Kim into leading the party so they could pretend it died on her watch.

kvinesknows: A Dark Evil Omen: kvinesknows: A Dark Evil Omen: kvinesknows: A Dark Evil Omen: kvinesknows: I seriousl doubt most of you would understand just how seriously assfarkingly retardedly lenient our sysyem is. Rape someone? oh you poor dear you were drunk.. 6 month suspended...kill someone..oh noes you were drunk and are native. two years for you... its pathetic

Bullshiat. Another stupid, lying fark of a Tory voter. What's pathetic is that you believe that nonsense.

wow you can read my statement yet you cant read daily papers that show I am right huh?

The average sentence for rape in Canada is 3.85 years. Average sentence for capital murder is around 22 years. You're just a liar. And human waste disposals like you want to mimic the American police state which is working so well, when the statistics show that the Canadian sentencing regime consistently works better.

capital muder does not even exist in canada, I asume you mean first degree? qnd how often does a first degree which is subject to minimum laws actually happen? rarely thats how often, the charge gets whitled down to damn near nothng... and the mandatory minimms were only relatively recently introduced

I could not give two flying farks what american law is.. when one killer or rapist gets off because of one judge its too many and it happens far too often in Canada the fricken averages for rapist should be 50 damn years and killers 75

Fark you to death. Stop trying to ruin Canada, you ratfarker, I want to go home some day.

karlahomolka ruined it, graham james ruined it, Brett Pilch ruined it, laughing girl (winnipeg) ruined it, 10th times the charm under age offenders across canada ruined it, Dean zimmerman ruined it, Lynette traverse ruined it

or should I say.. all the arsehole judges that gave these people little time or even worse little time and multiple chances are the ones that ruined Canada and forced a government to step in and place mandatory minimums on crimes.

go back and actually read th ...

Actually Karla Homolka cut a deal with the cops because they couldn't find a video tape cleverly hidden in a hanging ceiling. You should blame them, not the judge... mind you, she still spent 12 years behind bars while Paul Bernardo will never get out.

Graham James was granted parole by a parole board. The mistake was theirs.

I may actually agree with you on the Brett Pilch case, he should never have been released. But that being said, for every Pilch or James case out there how many more are there of people successfully paroled who never re-offend, keeping in mind that not every parolee was in jail for a sexual crime ?

No doubt, every case in which the parole system fails to spot a future reoffender should be looked at very carefully to see what mistakes were made and how they can be avoided. I'm no expert, but I have a strong suspicion that sexual offenders present a special case because they are unlikely to ever be cured so should rarely be paroled. Somehow, though, I don't see how having tougher pot laws with mandatory sentences is going to help.

A Dark Evil Omen: BudTheSpud: I remember how shrill and sanctimonious the opposition got when Mulroney was in power

Yeah, those silly people, how dare they get upset about blatantly criminal acts.

And, once again, us silly, silly people, getting upset about blatantly criminal acts. Not to mention that Harper got nothing resembling a majority and yet somehow wangled a majority government, so that's fun. He doesn't even represent a majority of voters, let alone a majority of Canadians.

But, hey, keep on keepin' on. With any luck we'll see a repeat of what happened to the Tories the last time they acted like this.

As someone who lived through the Chretien years, I can't help but chuckle hearing you mention blatantly criminal acts. Face it, every party does this same shiat when they are in power. It's all bluster and bombastic bullshiat on both sides right now. As for the crime bill, it was delayed during his minority government and got his mandate to pass it after the election. You may disagree with it, but there's millions of Canadians who think the revolving door justice system in this country is shameful and needs to be changed.

It makes me sick hearing people scream fascism in here. You farking assholes have no idea what you're talking about. In four years you'll have your chance to find something better than Harper. And guess what? I bet you won't even be in reeducation camps by then either. That'll take another Harper majority at least.

I agree with you a hundred percent. I'm a member of the NDP but I could see me getting down with the old PCs. Fiscally conservative, socially liberal...doesn't sound too shabby

I believe it was more something to do with that little old GST thing, that Chretien conveniently "forgot" to repeal after winning the election, of course. But nobody remembers anything about that in here.
