I watched a portion of it and really couldn't stand the narrator/activist. He also seems unconcerned with the atrocities the Ugandan government has committed. I know it's the hip thing to do, but I just can't get behind this movement.

NewportBarGuy: Have these people ever heard of Robert Mugabe? They should turn to the Googles.

Are you saying that someone with the name Robert and Joseph would actually commit such horrible crimes. That's impossible. Their names are just too nice sounding and homely. I just remember that time that old grandpa Joe would tell me stories about the olden days where movies were a nickel and ice cream was a couple pennies. And you want to tell me someone with same name as grandpa Joe is killing people in Africa?! Please move along.

/but really, which name sounds more threatening. Robert or Osama.

I know all you hipsters have to oppose Kony for being concerned for Africa before all of your friends, but realists acknowledge that nearly no one gave a shiat about what happened with warlords and child soldiers before this video. Now they do. And now with the backlash, more people care about more than American Idol or whatever vapid shiat our media is pushing.

I dont WANT people giving a shiat about Africa. When The West starts giving a shiat it usually means falling bombs, thousands dead and no progress made at all. Yeah a bunch of post-colonial places are hellholes. The answer ain't more colonials sticking in their dicks. The people who live there can work it out.

This. There are great NGOs doing good work in Africa, but whenever parts of Africa become fad causes, it ends up doing more harm than good. People with no comprehension of how to do functional economic development work start throwing money and things at the issues in ways that make them feel good but screw everything up.

I've been "aware" of the LRA mess in Uganda since I was in college in the late '90s, since I went to a school with a very strong community and economic development program. I've never made an effort to do something because as an American sitting halfway around the world there's nothing I can do, other than supporting responsible NGOs who have experience and training to know how to help in ways that aren't counter-productive. And the thing is, Uganda was getting better, better, that is, until a few years ago when everybody started paying attention and right-wing groups with agendas started to show up more interested in pushing their agendas than actually listening to the needs on the ground. And I count Invisible Children in the same "right-wing groups with agendas" category since they're getting large chunks of funding from some of the same organizations that have been funding groups like Lou Engle's "The Call" and their disastrous foray in anti-gay activism in Uganda.

Note: I want to specify that when I talk about "right-wing groups", I'm not talking about faith-based NGOs in general. World Vision has done great work in Uganda, both with former child soldiers and other development work, and helped develop the "ABC" AIDS-prevention program that was the model for reducing infection rates, until the American right-wing groups with agendas came in and convinced the Ugandan government that they shouldn't be promoting condom use.

Five. I didn't watch it either. I felt no need to watch a hipster "awareness" video about a topic I'm already familiar with. Besides, I don't think I've seen an awareness video about problems in Africa that wasn't dehumanizing to actual Africans, and since that makes me want to get stabby, I avoid them as a matter of course.

Realistically there is nothing that will be done about Kony or warlords like him unless African leaders start inviting in Western airstrikes or special forces and even then Western Countries probably want nothing to do with military action in the heart of Africa. You'd be wasting your donations to stop this man.

It's more a factor of the fact that it pisses me off that the same people who showed a singular lack of outrage over Rush Limbaugh's on-air support of the LRA, and who complained about Obama sending advisers to help Uganda hunt down Kony, are all clogging my facebook and twitter with KONY 2012 crap.

I didn't watch it because it won't have an impact in the overall grand scheme of things. International diplomacy does not work that way. It's a way for people to feel better about themselves without actually doing anything. My university is doing something like that by trying to end use of conflict minerals...while ignoring the fact that their Macs were assembled with slave labor

Just got through watching it.
You all SHOULD watch it!
The reason you should watch it has nothing to do with stopping Kony, but rather as a study on just how powerful the whole "social media" thing has become and think how you can use it to help reach whatever goal you have.

Do they realize that their slave labor assembled Macs are made with conflict minerals mined by slave labor? Not that I have a solution for that problem, but it seems like so many people know only what they learned by watching Blood Diamond and have no clue that their computer hardware includes components made from minerals mined by unfree labor, or that their chocolate is harvested by child slave labor, for that matter.

So who's agenda is this thing? It's getting way to much media attention to be purely viral. The media usually deals in bullshiat and manufactured outrage, not the plight of African orphans. To see them do an about turn is suspicious as shiat.

I don't get the sense that it's anything more than a tightly executed PR/propaganda piece by an NGO that's calling for open violence as a solution to violence. However, one of Invisible Children's primary recent benefactors is JP Morgan Chase, who could conceivably benefit greatly from access to Uganda's natural resources.

Make of that what you will.

...just don't make a conspiracy theory out of it, because that would be silly. The point is, this isn't some grassroots movement for diplomacy. It's a well-funded call to arms by people who don't know or don't care that the conflicts in Uganda are way more complicated than "kill bad man".

How much money is 75 million views worth?

2012-03-13 02:00:52 AM
Africa is a failure and there is not much we can do about it. If it makes you feel good to donate a dollar a month thinking it is helping some poor african child, that's great. But you should realize that it probably is not. Most aid organizations give directly to the government of African countries hoping they will do what's right to help their people. They don't. Most governments steal food aid or horde all the money for themselves to buy weapons or luxuries.

Continuing to throw money at them is not going to change anything. There is nothing we can do to change it except to stop giving them money. It seems counter intuitive but continuing to supply African countries money will just keep the current status quo going. What is happening now will continue to happen and nothing will change.

As I posted near the top of the thread, Invisible Children has a lot of religious-right fundamentalist financial backers that also back several of the hard-right groups who are trying to use Uganda as a testing ground for implementing theocratic government. If I had to guess, I'd be rather suspicious of the fact that Invisible Children suddenly managed to change the discussion about Uganda away from Uganda's horrible human rights track record with regards to the whole kill-the-gays bill and the call for the US government to condition aid to Uganda on their dropping the kill-the-gays bill to the idea that anything other than outright support of Uganda's government means supporting a murderous warlord. I'm disinclined to come up with conspiracy theories, but it seems rather convenient that everybody's forgotten that the Ugandan government is proposing genocide against gay people and instead are pushing for increased funding to deal with a guy who hasn't even been in the country for six years, and that the group that changed the discussion has so many ties to the theocratic right.

In talking to my sister, who's in community development and has a lot of connections with people working in different countries in Africa, she'd said that she's always thought that Invisible Children was a religious organization. I have no inherent issue with faith based NGOs, World Vision and Food for the Hungry do great work for example, but the fact that Invisible Children used to advertise themselves as a faith-based NGO and have now tried to hide any religious ties makes me suspicious as to their ulterior motives, particularly given their ties to groups funding organizations trying to turn Uganda into a theocracy.
