leftyblonde: is it still snowing there?

It didn't snow this year.

ChadManMn: I think cab fare would be a lot more than $20 from SLP to the bar. I live in Apple Valley, and cab fare to the airport is closer to $40.

Airport cab fare is typically a set price (decided by the airport commission), and often it's a rap-ey one.
The hotel in SLP I'm talking about is right off 394 & 100, so straight shot downtown, to Suzi's only about 7 miles total, so I think that's a shorter ride anyway.

Still... $20 only a guess. I haven't taken many cab rides to or from the burbs. But it'll be less than Apple Valley to MSP fo sho.

Also someone suggested Roseville, which is also a good choice, might be slightly closer and IIRC there's a variety of hotels & prices on that strip off 36.

//I just take the light rail to MSP nowadays
//$1.75 :)

Yup, that was me.

Cheaper lodging, right off of 36, and about a five-nine minute drive to Suzi's (dependent upon traffic and speed).

Also check Little Canada as it is right off of 36 as well. Pretty much anything in St Paul and St Paul suburbs off of 36, Rice or Snelling on the North end will get you to the bar right quick.

Good points. I guess it seems like SLP is farther out than it actually is.

Roseville would also be a good choice for the out of towners.

Oh and for anyone coming from out of town, in case you're wondering what kind of clothes you should bring...

I guess, just bring some of everything.

right now (and this could change) Saturday looks to be 55º, so bring a jacket folks. Especially since we're going to be on the river.

LlamaGirl: St. Paul! St. Paul!

We could have it at the Lamplighter strip club... No one is ever in there...

The good ol' Limplifter.

Tornadoes on the weather map today. Let us hope we don't all blow away!

Confirmed touchdown in the southwest corner of the state, and the Metro's in a higher forecast risk.

spidermann: alwayslurking: If there's room in the spidercab (I'm at Como Park), I would love to come out of lurkerdom :)

So far you're the only one who has stated specifically they have need of my services, so EIP and we'll set it up. :)

How big is the Spidercab?

2012-04-15 08:35:52 PM
Meh - the cold front is close enough that I doubt we'll go severe/tornadic this evening.

The pea-sized hailstorm that looked like snow coming down was a nice touch, though. :)

2012-04-15 08:37:19 PM
Hailstorm here in Blaine, that is. Radar made it look pretty localized, so YMMV.

2012-04-15 09:13:48 PM

fat aristotle: Mike, how long are you going to be in the Twin Cities for?

Fri/sat

Donnchadha: How big is the Spidercab?

Counting wife and I we can fit another three in the backseat, dependent upon size of the individual. I'd say two to be safe, although there are seat belts for three.

I have also been known to get people during the festivities and if things work out I will be getting a co-worker around 8pm. So, as long as it isn't every hour or so I have no problem picking people up in St Paul.

2012-04-15 09:47:02 PM
The Heinlein Crew will be there! Not only will I (finally) show up for a fark party, but I'll drag my lurker husband along as well. Looking forward to it!

I'll email you, but it'll be me and the missus, but she's small, so hopefully will fit in the backseat then

Taking a page from Miss.UnderstoodRedhead's play book, I'm bringing door prizes! They will range in value from practically worthless to entirely worthless. Except for the grand prize. That one's pretty cool. In a worthless sort of way.

2012-04-17 12:31:44 AM
So I guess I should let you know I'll be there.

2012-04-18 06:25:35 PM
Upgrade confirmed, biatches.
I'm going to be filled with free wine before I am in you, Minneapolis.

2012-04-18 06:31:47 PM
Chicago fell through. I'll be there.

2012-04-18 07:14:26 PM
Still no emails or confirmations for the SpiderCab.

If anyone wants a ride from St Paul to Suzi's please contact me at the latest on Friday. Need time to plan out routes and such.

:)

EIP, and it's Ultrafark. Don't be afraid to post in thread as well.

How big is the bar downstairs? Contingency plan if the forecast stays as is?

fat aristotle: How big is the bar downstairs? Contingency plan if the forecast stays as is?

The downstairs bar is usually a bit more crowded than the upstairs bar so we're planning to be upstairs. Especially with the numbers we're expecting.

Sounds good to me. I've never been down there so I just figured I'd ask. Thinking same area as last time?

Yeah, that was a pretty large area. If we can grab all those tables and push them together we can also use the bar that's right next to them.

so what's cool to do in MSP on a saturday afternnon? Is there a hood with used clothing stores and good bars or something?

Bukharin: so what's cool to do in MSP on a saturday afternnon? Is there a hood with used clothing stores and good bars or something?

Uptown is decent for that sort of thing. Lake and Hennepin is basically the center of that neighborhood although that exact intersection has become pretty commercial. A walk down Lake Street from about Irving to Lyndale would pass a lot of shops and whatnot. The Bryant Lake Bowl has good food and beer and is great for people watching. There's also a few cool places on Lyndale a block in either direction from Lake.

For the cooler, hole-in-wall bars, you'd be better off going to North East (Nordeast) Minneapolis. Here's a map I made a few years ago for a Fark pub crawl. It's not even close to all of the bars in that area but it gives you an idea. (You can also see Psycho Suzi's on that map.)

If you're looking for something a little more outdoorsy (assuming the weather cooperates), there's also a lot of great scenery around the Chain of Lakes area which is near Uptown. I like Minnehaha Falls as well, there are a lot of cool places to walk around there.

2012-04-19 06:12:02 PM
Raging Thespian:

Pretty much this. Hennepin and Lake has become a mini-MOA. The rest of the general area known as Uptown is still ok.

Good concentration of bars around Northeast, 13th & University a good starting point (as any). But depends on your definition of "good bar". Ranges from neighborhood dive to hipster bars, or sometimes both at the same time. Personally I like all of them.
There's some neat stuff (if it's nice out) around the river by the Guthrie theater, trails, restaurants, and whatnots.

When I think used clothes, I still think Uptown, but that's not really my thing.

If you want to check out our Twin city, you could head over to Selby-Dale in St Paul. Cool shops and great bars.

If you are in town for lunch, some good places in the NE area. Nye's or Kramarczuk's are both solid choices, not far from Suzis.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT!

The Mall of America has a Ragstock AND a Hooters. Perfect!

I highly recommend the Sample Room.
Was going to also recommend the Northeast Social but I don't think they've got their summer hours going yet so they may not be open for lunch (might not open till 4, but sometimes they open earlier).
The Red Stag is pretty good too. Jax Cafe if you want steak, I think they do lunch buy you might want to call first. It's a little spendy, but then so is Nye's.

Also not too far, and one of my favorites, Brasa. I eat there like once a week. Great food, and affordable.

//might stop by Kramarczuk's on the way home now

I've never been to Brasa, it's on the list though.

Kramarczuk's is always a stop on my way out of town for camping as their sausages are way better than standard Johnsonville fare.

2012-04-19 07:42:55 PM
Kramarczuk's ftw...NEVER forget to grab a jar of the hot pickle mix!

I *always* take friends to Hell's Kitchen for brunch when they come to town.

On 9th and Nicollett. Favorite place in the city.

Ooh, good call. Walking distance for probably anyone staying at a hotel downtown.

Do you mean tonight or tomorrow?

Someone mentioned the Sample Room - very good food, and it's half a block from Suzi's.

solaufein: Staying at the CP

solaufein: suggestions

See my post above. After 4, NE Social should be open, cute place, good food.

Depends on what you're after though, whether you want to stick by the hotel, what you want to spend, etc.
By your hotel - Steak? Manny's. Steak till you die? Fogo de Chao. Italian? Bar la Grassa (bonus: told "Bob the Trainer" from some reality show to get bent when he asked to bump some regular customers). Pizza? Black Sheep, or Pizza Nea across the river. Modern fine dining? Cosmos, probably my favorite place (or one of them). Farm to table/local ingredient? Alma (across the river again, but another favorite).

Or you could just say eff it and go for a Shaw burger.

2012-04-20 12:17:19 PM
It'd be on Saturday.

One last suggestion, if you do end up getting a group of people together, it might be fun to go to Gasthof's.
Close to Suzi's. It's a German beer hall type place, but the food there (German food, natch) is really quite good. Beer, also good. Plus you get to drink out of the boot.

You may, however, show up to the Fark party already completely destroyed.

//I believe they were featured on "Man vs Food"

2012-04-20 03:57:08 PM
Okay, so 94 coming back into St.Paul will be closed? Are you !@#$ing me? Dan, I'm sleeping at your house. Or I'll be walking. I mean, come on! Amen.

2012-04-20 04:38:31 PM
Also, anyone from St.Paul driving there that I can hitch a ride with? I can give you gas money. Or a burger. Or a cheelito. Or a quick one at the 2-2. You choose.

2012-04-20 04:44:29 PM
That came out wrong.....

2012-04-20 05:04:49 PM

CaptainJose: That came out wrong.....

Sure it did....

For out of towners coming in, if you are beer geeks there are a few places to hit. I'd suggest Townhall Brewery on University. Good beers, I've not eaten there but heard the food is good. Harriet Brewing is doing a block party starting at 2. Link
