mitchcumstein1: It's a turn of phrase commonly used in basketball. I understand that that's not what they do. But I do think he is of the "let players make plays" style of coaching.

Kentucky wouldn't have the best FG% defense in college without good coaching.

Wow... after reading that, I have to wonder what the difference is between Coach K and Calipari (not much).

Then again, you don't necessarily get to be at that level without making a few enemies. Some bring it on themselves, some have it borne of jealousy.

:: shrugs :: Doesn't Bobby Knight have some unthrown chairs he'd like to show them?

Sliding Carp: iron_city_ap: I still think they should stay and get the degree and learn how to play, but I understand it much better.

If they actually care about the education, I have to believe it's a hell of a lot easier for them to get it a few years later with $50 million in the bank, able to concentrate on their schoolwork instead of being full-time athletes, and not having their lives controlled by a megalomaniac college coach and a bunch of jock-sniffers in Indianapolis.

I suspect there are a lot of college athletes who have unrealistic expectations of their post-college career, and make bad decisions because of that, but for the ones who actually can get the lottery dollars - go for it.

That would be the smart thing to do, but, most of these guys aren't that smart. Dump more money than most people make in a lifetime into a 19 year old's (with minimal education) lap and its easy to understand that by the time they realize thats what they SHOULD do, they money is gone and the University could give a shiat less. Maybe, if they were good enough, a booster will let him start selling used cars at the dealership. Maybe.

Its the flip side of what I was talking about. Smrt peoplecan skip school because they are smrt. Atheletes get money for skills that can rapidly fail, and often do. Take advantage of what is offered so that you can MKE wiser decisions when the cash cow is more hamburger than filet'

I agree with this, but there's tons of guys leaving early that only get picked in the 2nd round if that that could be missing out on the money big time by not staying and getting into that 1st round or lottery range. There's even a several million dollar difference in the guaranteed contract between the number 1 pick and the bottom of the lottery. And there's the injury thing. Might be the biggest issue. Do I get some guaranteed money now or risk getting injured and having absolutely nothing. You could get more top kids to stay in school if you gave them good insurance so they could have a few million to live on if they get knocked out.

Yanks_RSJ: 1999: Duke alum Jennifer Taylor emails star forward Elton Brand to "express my disgust for your decision to leave the Duke program after only two years," explaining to Brand that "he will not be considered part of the Duke family, in my mind as well as many others." Brand's response: "Thank you very much, for reminding me of the reason why I left Duke. ... Never being considered a part of your posh group of yuppies really hurts me to the heart." In 2001, the then-Chicago Bull confirms the authenticity of the email exchange to Slam Magazine, cementing Taylor's position as the ultimate Cameron Crazy

And that sums up why I have a ton of respect for Elton Brand. Some prissy biatch who never had to worry about money because mommy and daddy sent her to Duke decided it was her duty to judge Brand, a guy who grew up in shiatty Peekskill, NY and had a chance to help his family financially by jumping to the NBA. Good for him for telling her to fark off.

Hahaha, never heard that story before. That's awesome.

It's both. Davis could do a lot by himself but you don't get to be the absolute best at defense without a good system and ALL the guys buying in to it.

rickythepenguin: 2001: Duke's run to the national title is abetted by typically Blue Devil-friendly officiating. In the NCAA final against Arizona, the refs refuse to blow the whistle on star Duke guard Jason Williams. (By the unofficial count of the Washington Times' Tom Knott, Williams ends the night with seven fouls.) "I think in any sport there's a tendency at times to blame something that shouldn't be blamed," Krzyzewski says, taking a brief break from working the refs to pooh-pooh the zebras' ardor for the Devils.

the precise one i thought of......with about, ohhhh, 10 or so minutes left in the game, and Williams sitting on 4 fouls, there was a play at halfcourt where Williams was sprinting up the court, bringing the ball up, and bowls over the Arizona player.

The ref grabs his whistle, begins to put his hand behind his head, beginning the foul signal for charge -- williams' 5th foul, see ya, you're gone -- and then apparently realizes he can't foul out Duke's star, and in one clunky motion the ref brings his hand from behind his head to his side to make the "hands on hips" signal for a defensive foul block.

I was furious.

Let us be clear. Duke does indeed suck.

Duke has the distinction of being the only team to have more than 100 points scored against them in a championship game and for losing a championship game by the highest margin (30 points).

No other team has sucked as badly (link to table on wiki).

As a fan of the Runnin' Rebels going way back, I know this first hand. Your post is just another example of how Duke was treated with Princess gloves while others (UNLV and Tarkanian, for example) were screwed over royally.

However, as much Duke sucks (and they do) Tark & UNLV slapped the Blue biatches back in 1990 (15 minute summary video of the game).

103-73.

GreatGlavinsGhost: 103-73.

18-0 run in less than 3 minutes in the 2nd half. Probably the most lopsided 3 minutes of basketball ever played.

Hunt baseline jumper - Johnson driving bank shot - Hunt corner three - Augmon steal, Hunt fastbreak layup (timeout Duke) - Augmon steal, Hunt fastbreak layup - Laettner missed layup, Augmon fastbreak dunk (timeout Duke) - Butler fastbreak layup - Hunt three.

i changed/modified my espn bracket way too much today because steams burned me in the past
Notre Dame has the team to beat Duke, if they hit their 3s:
UND:This is a terrific ball-handling team that rarely turns it over. Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins helm the outside attack, while Jack Cooley cleans up the glass on both ends. But beware: When the Irish start to miss from 3-point land, the bottom usually falls out.

ND and Duke, shiat, it's a "whoever misses the first three loses" game. Oh, Duke...it's all a matter of when the 3 spigot turns off.

12349876: It's both. Davis could do a lot by himself but you don't get to be the absolute best at defense without a good system and ALL the guys buying in to it.

True, you have to have guys buy in, but I think that may go to the players you have as much as the coaching. Having that guy in the middle who is a once in decade type defensive player though does help quite a bit. It makes everybody better. You can pressure higher up on the floor, and you can do a lot more on the perimeter because you know that guy is at the rim ready to change or block a shot. And obviously the more pressure you get on the ball, the harder it is to score.

Kentucky is a fine basketball team, Memphis had very good teams, as did UMass when he was there. I'm not saying the man can't recruit, I just don't care much for his overall...shtick, I guess is the word.

2012-03-12 04:51:40 PM
12349876

The fact that Kentucky's big guys can guard out on the floor helps so much too. They can switch that on-ball screen that everybody loves so much these days. They're guards are big and talented enough to guard most other teams bigs on the switch too. Kentucky is freakishly talented, the only team even close is Carolina, and we all know that would be a hell of a game if we got to see it again.

That's not a bad point, but I don't think you could compare the two teams. Ryan Kelly is not Kyle Singler and never will be, Zoubek was playing better than Plumlee is right now, and Seth Curry is only just beginning to figure out how to lead, and isn't yet filling the Nolan Smith role.

That, and there's too many very good teams this year. Duke's out by round of 8- but they will destroy the ACC next year.

I never said Lew Perkins was a shining light, in fact, I thought he was a sack of shiat from the word go. It certainly had nothing to do with any of Self's guys and the basketball program itself though. It was Perkins and his flunkies selling tickets to the games, amongst other things. Self has never played an ineligible player, even though he's had one looked at, Arthur, and two who are currently not playing because they didn't qualify. By the way, if those two were playing, Kansas would be, with Kentucky and Carolina, a favorite to win the whole farking thing. Also, the people who are responsible for that ticket fiasco are currently serving federal jail sentences for the next 3 years or so, not working in other, higher profile jobs for more money.

Again, Bill Self is not pure as the driven snow, none of them are, they all cheat, but he also doesn't leave a trail of shiat behind him three meters wide, like John Calipari. The fact that he's not a raging asshole helps that tremendously.

My most hateable moment:

Krzyzewski saying that Gerald Henderson breaking Tyler Hansbrough's nose was "completely unintentional."

I guess when you're about to lose on your home court to your most hated rival for the 3rd year in a row and you try to block the shot with your elbow (watch at 40 seconds in) it's completely unintentional.

Personally, I am a UVa guy. They have sucked for so long it amuses me read these threads.

UNLV was the best professional team in the NCAA tournament that year.
KY is as arrogant as Duke. They matching color scheme makes it easy to hate both.
The Southern bracket is where Upsets will happen. I expect neither 1 or 2 to make out.

They won, but just barely.
