I hate Duke and Coach K much less than I hate Calipari. Which is a shame, because I've at least respected Kentucky.

Because he's a scumbag who has vacated TWO Final Fours. I know they all cheat in some way or another, but he seems to be an asshole to boot. Did you see him on CBS last night? He's just a prick. He's arrogant as all hell, and he has nothing to be arrogant about.

And I don't think he's a very good coach either. He gets the most talent he can, rolls the ball out, and sees what happens. I remember at Memphis in '08, they couldn't shoot free throws for shiat, he said he wasn't worried, that they'd shoot them well when they needed to. Guess what? Kansas fouled in the last two minutes, Memphis missed them, and KU won the National Title. Not that it would have mattered, because again, Memphis vacated that Final Four appearance.

1999: Duke alum Jennifer Taylor emails star forward Elton Brand to "express my disgust for your decision to leave the Duke program after only two years," explaining to Brand that "he will not be considered part of the Duke family, in my mind as well as many others." Brand's response: "Thank you very much, for reminding me of the reason why I left Duke. ... Never being considered a part of your posh group of yuppies really hurts me to the heart." In 2001, the then-Chicago Bull confirms the authenticity of the email exchange to Slam Magazine, cementing Taylor's position as the ultimate Cameron Crazy

And that sums up why I have a ton of respect for Elton Brand. Some prissy biatch who never had to worry about money because mommy and daddy sent her to Duke decided it was her duty to judge Brand, a guy who grew up in shiatty Peekskill, NY and had a chance to help his family financially by jumping to the NBA. Good for him for telling her to fark off.

The William Avery part amuses me. Coach K says 'Billy here is good enough to be drafted in....' And his mom here 'Billy WILL be drafted in....' Stupidity at its stupidiest.

She also probably has no problem if a kid like Zuckerberg drops out of school because he can make a billion or two right now.

I used to be against kids leaving school early to enter the Pros, but, its a VERY valid point. I still think they should stay and get the degree and learn how to play, but I understand it much better.

Brand was a great kid, I grew up a few towns over from him and he absolutely demolished us in high school, but never showed off or called attention to himself even though everyone knew he'd be an NBA lottery pick when he was 14.

2001: Duke's run to the national title is abetted by typically Blue Devil-friendly officiating. In the NCAA final against Arizona, the refs refuse to blow the whistle on star Duke guard Jason Williams. (By the unofficial count of the Washington Times' Tom Knott, Williams ends the night with seven fouls.) "I think in any sport there's a tendency at times to blame something that shouldn't be blamed," Krzyzewski says, taking a brief break from working the refs to pooh-pooh the zebras' ardor for the Devils.

the precise one i thought of......with about, ohhhh, 10 or so minutes left in the game, and Williams sitting on 4 fouls, there was a play at halfcourt where Williams was sprinting up the court, bringing the ball up, and bowls over the Arizona player.

The ref grabs his whistle, begins to put his hand behind his head, beginning the foul signal for charge -- williams' 5th foul, see ya, you're gone -- and then apparently realizes he can't foul out Duke's star, and in one clunky motion the ref brings his hand from behind his head to his side to make the "hands on hips" signal for a defensive foul block.

I was furious.

The butthurt is strong with this one. Its a fine whine.

I do wonder when Calipari will slip town ahead of sanctions.

Don't worry, Coach K will retire and Duke will suck for a while as they cycle through ex-Duke player coaches.

You're not going to like this (new window):

FTA: Wesley is a longtime and well-documented power-broker who now works with Creative Arts Agency (CAA). And even though people associated with agents are supposed to be nowhere close to players at an event like this, Wesley has spent the better part of tonight sitting in a chair on the court around Kentucky freshmen Anthony Davis and Michael Gilchrist, and within talking and bumping distance of every high-school prospect in attendance.

Nike officials allow it to happen.

So it happens.

And Wesley must know just how much it agitates the NCAA. For proof, consider that I was standing with the two NCAA officials earlier tonight, just talking and catching up when we were suddenly interrupted by a young man who tapped one of the NCAA officials on the shoulder.

"Excuse me," the young man said. "Wes wanted me to tell you hello."

On one hand, troubling.

On the other, absolutely hilarious.

Don't even get me started about the 2001 Final Four. The officiating in the semifinal was criminal.

But that's not even worth talking about anymore because it's just a fact of life. If there's a reason to hate Duke over it, it's that Coach K spent the first several years of his coaching career complaining about how Carolina got all the calls, and has spent the last 20 benefiting from the same thing.

You obviously didn't read the article.

2000: After leaving Duke, former star Corey Maggette admits to accepting thousands of dollars from summer-league coach Myron Piggie. Though such payments would presumably have made Maggette ineligible, the NCAA declines to strip Duke of its Final Four appearance. The Blue Devils, in fact, aren't punished at all. This undoubtedly confuses John Calipari.

If they actually care about the education, I have to believe it's a hell of a lot easier for them to get it a few years later with $50 million in the bank, able to concentrate on their schoolwork instead of being full-time athletes, and not having their lives controlled by a megalomaniac college coach and a bunch of jock-sniffers in Indianapolis.

I suspect there are a lot of college athletes who have unrealistic expectations of their post-college career, and make bad decisions because of that, but for the ones who actually can get the lottery dollars - go for it.

Not a whole lot. Save most of that Myron Piggie/CMH stuff happened when they (the Rush boys, Maggette) were in high school, and not actually at the university, whereas Marcus Camby took money from an agent only while at UMASS.

I'm not praising Duke for being perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I said they all cheat because they all do, I could tell you stories that you wouldn't believe. But this asshole has had two Final Fours vacated, two. That's just not giving a fark about the rules, and people disliking you enough to fark you twice. Everything I hear about Calipari, from people in the college basketball coaching profession, is bad.

that was.....maryland? I forget. i think it was though....i swear to christ i'm not googling but wasn't taht when Duke came back from some ungodly deficit to beat the terps?

i vividly remember the 2001 final though. my wife was in tucson and i was in tempe, and we kinda watched the game together on the phone. she was staying not far from 4th avenue and could hear the chaos after the game.

yeah. that freaking call. i have to youtube that. the ref i swear to christ realizes he's about to foul out williams and makes his crazy motion to bring his hand from his head to his hips. it looked very natural.

It doesn't matter when your amateur status is compromised, once it is, it is. Actually, if it happened in high school, that kind of makes it worse since your compliance department failed to catch it. How can you stop a kid from accepting cash once he's on your campus? Please, explain to me how either one of Calipari's final fours that were vacated were his fault.

Yeah, Maryland had a 39-17 lead at one point in the first half. Duke rallied, and at one point in the 2nd half the entire Metrodome thought Carlos Boozer had fouled out, even Boozer himself. Instead, the foul went on Lonny Baxter to foul HIM out, and Duke ended up winning by 9. Jason Williams also finished with 4 fouls and got away with several that could have gotten him out of the game too.

I'm admittedly biased because I was doing student radio for Maryland at the time, but I was there, 15 feet from the court and there wasn't a single person (other than the officials) who didn't think Boozer had just fouled out.

He does let them play through mistakes more often than other coaches, but he had a televised practice a couple of weeks ago, and it showed that he coaches a lot more than anyone thinks he does.
