How does one say, "ICE BANK MICE SELF", in Switzerland?

Anyone else disappointed that this didn't turn out to be a story involving Craig Ferguson and Swiss prostitutes?

Craig needs to dump the stupid shiat at the end of all of his interviews. It was never really that funny to begin with and is old and stale. Spend those extra 5 minutes on the interview. Also, why do late night talk shows feel the need to have multiple guests all the time? There are too many times that they're in the middle of an entertaining interview and have to cut it short just to get to somebody else.

This thread is about late night talk shows, right?

The show's gotten into a bit of a rut lately and turning into the Same Joke Every Night problem that killed Letterman years ago. I think it's time to send Geoff on vacation for a couple weeks so that Craig can retool.

/the no-audience, one-guest interview of Stephen Fry was classic.

I think Craig got in so many arguments with the CBS censors he quit trying new things. Plus marriage and kids will tend to kill off time for generating original material.

Regardless, it's nothing compared to what happened to Dennis Miller. He was hilarious until he had a mortgage to pay and kids to feed.

The fascinating bit is that 2/3 voted down giving themselves two extra weeks mandated vacation time. A Swiss expert on the radio this morning said nearly all Swiss are optimistic to join the upper classes in their lives and hence are against socialistic policies, even if they would benefit themselves currently.

Did you also note in the article that the norm for vacation in Europe was six weeks?
And I'll bet they don't take any communication devices with them to keep in touch with the office either.

Democracy and Republic describe two different aspects of government, they are not mutually exclusive.

well, I know that Switzerland has one of the lowest voter turnouts in the world (because they have votes on stuff pretty much monthly, and a lot of the referanda are pretty localized and low impact)

but there was a study several years ago on this phenomena, how the less the democratic deficiency, the lower the voter turnout. basically, people are lazy.

/ i think that's great. less people should vote.
// the only people who should vote are people interested enough in voting. the worst thing this country could do is motivate the indifferent/unintelligent to vote. that's why i hate 'get out the vote' movements. suffrage should be universal and completely available... but voting should not be encouraged.

I've never read the Swiss Constitution, but I've read the US Constitution and it sets the framework for a republic with a representative government, not a direct democracy, so as I stated before, the US Constitution would have to be amended to allow for a direct vote.

I really love the Late Late Show, but the end-of-interview stuff is taking up half the show now. It's too much. Maybe instead of all that question/mouth organ/awkward pause junk, he could spend more time just talking to the guests, or doing another segment altogether.

/I look forward to Craig's email in which he asks me to help him write the show

not that it matters, but we can change the constitution. the very document has included a method to make alterations. it's just a system of rules that can be bent, changed, or ignored in accordance with the desired result. kind of like the matrix.

Switzerland is a Confederation, not a Republic.

That whole referendum thing isn't that great. For example, in one canton (the Swiss equivalent of a province) women did not obtain the right to vote until the 1970s, and then only because the federal government imposed it. Until then the all-male electorate kept voting against it.

Pardon me?

CA has its share of "low information" conservative voters. Leave SF and LA and you have transplanted meth cooking Okies who moved in during the dust bowl years.

If the CA legislature was allowed to raise taxes every time the public voted in more spending bills then the feedback loop would have been complete -- but no -- the GOP blocked any tax increases and you end-up with the borrowing mess we're in today.

We have to finance infrastructure maintenance.

Think about that for a moment and then realize the long term fiscal impact of paying interest on maintenance.

6 weeks would have brought the swiss in line with the majority of the other European countries. So Essentially everyone in Europe is getting a month or 6 weeks vacation every year.

Whats the avg here 2 weeks ?
