Quit monkeying around subby

2012-03-11 08:24:44 PM
During the attack, Jennings allegedly screamed: "I'm going to kill you, you should go back to your own country!".

obviously, this frazzled banker needs another tax break.

I don't know why that cabbie is biatching.

At least he got a tip.

Great headline.

Unbelievable story from the cabbie. Well, about as believable as Nafissatou Diallo's claims.

Good headline, subby.

Jennings claims he was acting in self-defense and feared he was being kidnapped.

Had that happen once...the cab driver turned off the main road onto a dirt road, and started heading deep into the forest. I was starting to get pretty weirded out until the driver stopped at a remote propane refueling station that was apparently placed there for safety reasons. He refueled his propane-powered cab, and we were on our way. If I were insanely rich, I might have stabbed him.

This guy is an asshat regardless, but who's to say the cabbie wasn't trying to rob the guy? Charged him extra, and when he wouldn't pay, the driver was gonna take him back to Ny. So he pulls out a knife and demands the cabbie stop before he gets back on the highway. Cabbie goes for knife and gets slashed.

Just playin devils advocate here. It is possible it happened like that. Probably not, but you know..innocent till guilty and all that..

There are so many things wrong with this story:

1) Cab driver turning off into the forest without so much as a "by your leave"-I would have probably jumped out of the cab at this point.
2) The fact that it didn't occur to you to ask what the hell he was doing until he'd already stopped to get fuel-you must be way more trusting than I am.
3) The fact that the propane station is in the middle of the forest for "safety reasons"-because, I know, let's store volatile fuel where it's surrounded by easily combustible material!

Christ, I hope he at least took you off the meter for the time it took him to refuel...

Those were all the things that completely weirded me out. He did stop the meter, and it turns out this refueling station was in a huge cleared-out area that was mostly covered with asphalt and concrete, and fenced around.

No, I didn't ask...I was young and naive, but I did start to get into a very defensive mode, looking for exit points, seeing what was around that I might use as a weapon...Come to think of it, I believe I did say something like "seems like the long way to get there..." and the guy said "It'll just take a few minutes." which didn't make me feel much better. It was just a strange thing all around. Being in South Carolina didn't help much, either.

The original story had the cabbie driving to guy from New York to Connecticut after the passenger agreed to a $204 fare . . . and also a promise of a big tip.

The driver delivered the asshat to his front door and at that point the cabbie was offered $50.

Here's a link to a different story where some of the facts appeared to be massaged in the banker's favor, but still . . . well, draw your conclusions from the story.

The banker's an ass (new window)

Most large propane installations are well-removed from densely populated areas. They probably had a burn area set up in case of an explosion.

Assuming the facts are straight, and the guy really is just a rich asshat, I hope he gets the maximum term in a federal "pound-me-in-the-ass" prison.

Nothing more satisfying than seeing smug, rich, racist a-holes get put away because they thought their money gives them a license to do whatever the hell they want.

Of course, the law should also be fair---he shouldn't be punished SOLELY for being a rich a-hole. In the end, what's most important is the crime and intent behind the crime...at least, I'd like to hope.

2012-03-12 07:34:53 AM
If the alleged facts are true, it sounds like this guy was drunk off his ass and that led to his otherwise-veiled problems come to the surface.

As it's rather unlikely that this guy is a serious threat to public safety (as compared to armed robbers and rapists), jail really isn't an optimal solution for this kind of incident. I'd say a couple years of probation and mandatory alcohol counseling would be better.

In case you're wondering, I'd say the same thing for a "regular" guy with no priors who instigated a bar fight or something else of a more blue-collar nature...

Im gonna side with rich guy on this one, you don't stab somebody in the hand on purpose, it's pretty clear the cabbie tried to grab it out of his hands. Charge him with brandeshing a weapon and theft of services, not assault.

Also what's with with the hate crime bullshiat? So this guy specifically hailed a cab to get a middle eastern driver to get in a fued about the fare and stab him in the hand?

I thought the recent nonsense in Kansas with the teaching of evolution made him relevant again, unfortunately.

csb: The original WJB was good friends with my grandfather. They used to get together and debate/argue with each other on a regular basis. They had dinner together the night before Bryan left for the Scoped trial.

I had to read the headline a few times. "Wait. The guy who ran for president over and over 100 years ago?"

2012-03-12 09:29:16 AM
"Jennings said they didn't discuss the fare and he assumed the cost would be $125 to $150,"

Bullshiat. Those guys ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS discuss the fare before they go anywhere. Usually high-balling the price and adding plus tip and toll. I live in Hoboken which is less a 10 minute drive through the tunnels and these farkers try hitting me up for $50 plus tip and toll. They get $45 all included and I tell them that before we go anywhere, they gripe about it until I point out that they could leave the meter running and I'll double that plus tip and toll if they prefer. They always take the $45 and I don't have to get all stabby.

2012-03-12 09:42:40 AM
An allegedly drunk Jennings, 45, refused to pay the cabbie, a Queens man of Middle Eastern descent, $204 for the long ride, authorities said.

Jennings offered just $50 before pulling a pen knife and allegedly stabbing the terrified driver, according to the victim.

WTF? If this is true..you make 2 million a year..and you try to stiff some poor hack when he did his job? Then you stab him? Wow, if this is true, you are a rich spoiled douchebag.
