I grew up like a mile from Shalimar. It's full of trailer parks and rednecks. I have no idea what these people are talking about.

To be fair, bargain hunters are a relentless, pitiless sort.

They'll slit your throat if it means that they can get Arizona Iced Tea at dirt-cheap prices.

Our Downtown Business Association president told me that the Town should prohibit "unseemly" businesses and those unlikely to succeed. I told him that he was a Communist, then quit.

What a collection of assholes. I'm surprised their "property values" didn't come up unless I missed it.

The Dollar General isn't bad when you need to run out for TP or toothpaste and such. I live 30 minutes away from real shopping, so I hit the DG regularly. It's that or the gas station.

Family Dollar, otoh, is white trash hell.

I don't buy things like toilet paper or socks or toothpaste or Nyquil from anyplace OTHER than Dollar General or Family Dollar. Otherwise I'm throwing money away.

Yeah... and there was nothing particularly wrong with it. The girl at the register looked like she might be trying out for a role in The Walking Dead, but that was the only thing of note.

No one wants to smell poor people or catch the diseases they carry.

Poor people go to the dollar store because one dollar is the most they can ever afford to pay for anything.

Poor people are contemptible and should be rounded up and sent to Iran if they like being poor so much.

Jezzus H Christ. It's the PANHANDLE. The Redneck Riviera. The place other natives Floridians mock. I can't believe a dollar store isn't the happeningest place in town.

2012-03-11 08:01:01 PM
Just so we're clear here: The Dollar General isn't a dollar store. Why just yesterday I bought myself a curling iron there that cost a whopping ten whole Washingtons!

It's an intentional misnomer, so's you pretentious types with your fancy shoppin' ways never discover our bargain paradise. Drive right by, fancy people. Nothin' to see here.

The dollar store is ok

/but don't let those trashy .98¢ stores take root or it's all down hill from there

2012-03-11 08:20:28 PM
My nephew was obsessed with the idea of the Wonderfall (tm) when I met him and his family at Disney World. Apparently there aren't any Golden Corals where he lives, but they run the commercials, and he found out there were some in Orlando. We ended up going there. I think he will have more memories of the wonderfall than Disney. This is not a csb. It is an explanation of why I am bookmarking this thread. So I can come back and steal TMLO's picture, if that is OK.

They don't drop those stores in just anywhere - they do market research. They know exactly who and where their customers are.

Reality bites.

27.01% of the people in Shalimar (zip 32579), FL are registered as Democrats. 71.82% are registered Republican. Remaining are independent: 0.00%.

So these are Republicans trying to use government to tell someone what they can or can't do on their own private property already zoned commercial?

What's the matter, they can't find a way to blame the new dollar store on Obama?

Real. Cousins (youngish ones) love that stuff. Advertised constantly around here.

If the neighborhood is so upscale then how did a Starbucks end up closing. Me thinks there is some false stuffiness being portrayed by the locals.

In the future, all restaurants are Taco Bell and all stores are Dollar General

2012-03-11 09:14:31 PM
Judging from the small town I lived in, these people have their heads up their own asses in 1955.

2012-03-11 09:16:35 PM
As handy as it can be for cheap toiletries and soda, a Family Dollar is the kiss of death for a strip mall and one hell of a canary in the mine shaft...

"Hrmmm... This area has a family dollar. It's on the decline."

Not so much a indicator of thing redneck as a sign the area has fallen on hard times.

I imagine Detroit has one Family Dollar for every 3rd house. And Flint should have one every 50 feet.

2012-03-11 09:34:21 PM
The 'Dollar Palace' thing is because in a lot of small or mid sized town the only big store is Wal Mart. If you go there you will more than likely run into a neighbor, someone from church, your boss, or a family member. You can't just run in there to get something without having to be presentable enough for any of them.

2012-03-11 09:34:22 PM
I go to a local dollar store just before I take my (now 6 year old) son to San Jose Sharks games -to get those cheap but plentiful multi-colored glow-in-the-dark light-stick bracelet/necklace things.

I spend 3$ for 15 of them (the come in 5-packs), activate them, and put them all over his arms, wrists, link a few for around his neck, etc.

He likes being the multi-color glow-in-the-dark kid, and he is much easier to find when he runs off. Aftet the games, we go to the park across from the pavillion, connect most of the glow-rings together in a giant multi-color glowing ball, and toss it around in the dark. I think he enjoys that part more than the game itself (especially these last few weeks )

A well spent $3 in my opinion, anyway.
