But, but... why?

2012-03-09 07:32:04 PM
I haven't seen that video in ages. Still greatness even today. Met Nolan Ryan after a game in 89 after getting to watch the Ranges shut out the Indians 7-0.

I have always, always loved that video.

Ventura - what a farking mook. Yeah, he was a good player - but he'll always be remembered as the guy who picked a fight with a goddamn geriatric. And got his ass handed to him within 10 seconds.

This makes me grin every time I see it. Possibly the most entertaining video in baseball.

Here's the story. (pops) Basically, now that Ventura is the manager of the White Sox, they think it's disrespectful all of a sudden.

Texas, you pussies, why are you not showing this every damn inning? Especially when you play the White Sox.

Hell, that's Ivan Rodriguez catching for Ryan there. There's a different insane.

This and the fly ball that bounced off of Jose Canseco's head and over the outfield wall for a home run are probably the two funniest moments from the last 25 years of baseball.

I love baseball fights. Nobody has any intention of hitting anybody until a teammate holds them back. Then they act like all they want to do is break free to take a swing at somebody.

Ryan's great, I'd like him even better if he had run into the broadcast booth and punched out Ken Harrelson.

Short answer, no.

Benevolent Misanthrope: Ventura - what a farking mook. Yeah, he was a good player - but he'll always be remembered as the guy who picked a fight with a goddamn geriatric. And got his ass handed to him within 10 seconds.

Ventura was in a Catch-22. Ryan was throwing inside all game and the players decided in the dugout that the next one buzzed would do something about it. If he DIDN'T charge the mound, he would have had other issues in the clubhouse.

2012-03-10 09:48:13 AM
My theory is that Ryan had to be the tough guy in that situation. That White Sox team had Bo Jackson and Frank "The Big Hurt" Thomas running onto the field. Could you imagine going up against those two? The other 25 non-Nolan-Ryan Rangers combined wouldn't stand a chance.

I think everyone still forgets incidents in that game, I believe that was one of the series where they were going back and forth hitting batters. I believe that this is one of the few baseball rules where you have to charge because it is expected as a way to release the pressure and you can see how Ventura doesn't look to be thrilled with having to charge the mound by him slowing down.

Its like greg Maddox having to throw at batters, its not even remotely meaningful since his heart wasn't in it.

Goddamnit.

The White Sox's first game is in Texas.

It is Robin Ventura's first game managing the White Sox.

This could have been the biggest trolling moment in baseball history. But alas...

I didn't know Ventura got Ryan in a choke hold and took him down after Rodriguez grabbed hold of him.

Still doesn't change to love of the noogies.

This thing never gets old. I forgot that Bo Jackson was playing for the Sox then. Not somebody I'd want to mess with.

The Rangers should send Ryan out to exchange line-up cards with Ventura on opening day just to see if he flinches.

When Bo was healthy? No, not even close and I'm a UGA fan who is obligated to hate 3 teams, auburn, Florida, and GT but Bo was quite possibly the most versatile athlete in a long time.

I still wish herchel would have went to the nfl first to see his true potential instead if wasting some of the best years in the usfl.

When healthy, Bo was a better two-sport player overall. The problem was that Bo wasn't healthy long enough to "prove" that point conclusively. Deion was a HOF-worthy CB but a middling baseball player. Bo could've been a HOF-worthy RB and an above-average baseball player. Sadly, we'll never know. Avascular necrosis is a biatch.

If we're going by video game metrics, Michael Vick is the greatest athlete in history.

I do agree that Bo was the better athlete than Deion (and definitely a better batter), but as far as impacting a game, I give the edge to Deion in both sports.
QBs changed their entire gameplan when Deion was on the other side, and on the diamond, while he was an average-at-best hitter, he was pretty consistently among the leaders in steals.

To negate deion on the football field just run right at him, once you get him thinking the rb is coming his coverage would suffer since he would be too worried about having to actually make a tackle. He also wasn't the first cb to force QBs to change a game plan.

And as a braves fan I hated him playing since I knew he could steal runs but give them back on his defense and weak/inaccurate arm.

He finished 2nd in the league in steals twice. Problem is, he was also amongst the league leaders in caught stealing both years (1st one year, 6th the other year). If he were able to get on base better, he could've been quite valuable, but as it stands, he was a decent player for a few years. Bo might've been a bit overrated, but he was an impact hitter who was getting better the more he played (as opposed to Deion, who had one good year then regressed). He was also a pretty efficient basestealer as well. I think if Bo didn't injure his hip, he would've been a legitimate All-Star for several years (though more as a backup than starter).

Football-wise, there's no doubting Deion's greatness. But Bo was a pretty awesome RB. As a Chiefs fan, I am very confident that teams were gameplanning defenses around him. Bo could keep elite pass-rushers like Derrick Thomas off the field because they couldn't let the Raiders running game kill them.

huh.. yanno I never realized Deion had such horrible CS numbers

I think the reason we'll probably never see anyone even come close to Bo OR Deion again (as far as being a legitimate two-sport star) is likely precisely BECAUSE of what happened to Bo.
Teams aren't willing to risk having an asset injured playing another sport.

What's amusing is that it also tended to screw up his own team's defense AND he was beatable as a CB with the right gameplan.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS!!!!

If it were flag football, Deion Sanders would be the greatest of all time. Hell, I remember one MNF game where he dove at a RB's feet (can't remember who). The RB jumped over him, no contact at all, but didn't land on his feet, and the commentators went on for five minutes about what a great tackle Deion made.

Ventura looked like a guy that had just beat out a throw to first, not a guy that got his ass beat. An old man patting you on the head is light years away from an ass kicking. Had the benches not emptied, Ventura would have pummeled grandpa.

Ventura's an ass. Always was.

And Nolan got something baseball has forgotten. Pitchers need to be allowed to pitch inside. Headhunting is wrong. Taking away legitimate pitches is also wrong.

2012-03-10 12:26:25 PM
I think, as a few have mentioned above, that Ventura felt he had to charge the mound because of one of those stupid "unwritten rules" that baseball is just full of, and he was expecting Ryan to just sort of shove him a couple of times until the rest of the players ran in to stop it. Instead, Ryan threw him a beat down.

This series was one which was testy from both sides and there had been warnings so Nolan should have been tossed out but instead they tossed the sox manager for pointing out the umps stupidity.

Nolan was a douchebag on the field and had a short threshold for putting up with bullshiat off the field, a buddy was a huge fan and Nolan told him to go away before he could even introduce himself. He ended up giving away all his Nolan stuff to goodwill after that.

I was at that legendary Braves-Padres game. Padres manager Dick Williams spent the whole game trying to headhunt pitcher Pascal Perez. After three attempts, Braves big ole third baseman Bob Horner, who was in civvies because his hand was in a huge plaster cast, went into the clubhouse and got his uniform on because he knew it was gonna get ugly and if he rushed the field out of uniform he'd be suspended.

I have never seen an uglier crowd at a baseball game, more like a boxing prize fight. When the braves pitcher got drilled in the eighth it was an all out gang fight. Graig Nettles tried to charge into the Atlanta dugout and Horner swung his casted hand like a war club. Nettles pulled up short like Wiley Coyote in a Roadrunner cartoon. One of the Padres tried to swing wide of Nettles and got one hell of a beer shower from nearby front row fans.

Good times, good times.
