Was that wrong? Should I have not done that?

Huh. I used to wonder how they did that or how they figured out who the dentist was for a given person.

I've wondered how they know what dentist to contact too. I suppose they go to a surviving family member and ask them?

Given the ages of the victims, it should have only been difficult to identify the 6 and 7 year olds.

The American Dental Association has a giant database filled with everything about your teeth. They even know about the time you just ran your toothbrush under the water to fool your parents into thinking you'd brushed.

Kurmudgeon: I need to quit thinking that people couldn't possibly get any lower for greed.

It doesn't seem like this was greed related to taking advantage of their deaths; it looks like it was just garden variety healthcare fraud, and the dentist happened to unluckily pick the wrong files to commit fraud with a couple years ago

Which is ultimately the downside of committing a fraud, even one you think no-one will ever discover - it puts you at the mercy of random events that you can't control

2012-03-09 08:41:14 PM
Huh. Here I was thinking people go into dentistry because they want everyone to have healthy teeth, and it turns out they just like getting paid $200 an hour to watch a bunch of women work.

Supposed to swap the dental records before you swap the bodies and make the family "disappear"

submitting at least five false claims, totaling more than $1,000

Based on the cost billed to my insurance for my prior dental work, this hardly even seems worth the effort to falsify.

I can't remember meeting anyone from India not named Patel. Oh wait there is Ravi Shankar. Anyway, just for amusement, I just did a Google search for dentists named Patel and came up with plenty. My favotite is Dr. Tejas Patel from Austin. I wonder if he wears a sombrero?

This guys practice must have been failing hard. First all the kids were straight up medicaid (from the description), no dentist takes medicaid if they can get any other sorts of patients. The only ones that do tend to be federally subsided centers.

Patel is a northern Indian name. You've never met a Singh or Gupta? Virtually every state in the country has some dominant name.

Brostorm: Well, 7 kids, different names, medicaid,No fathers. As a black persob the fraud us far from the second worst part of this mess.

Honestly the fraud probably benefitted the kids in a twisted way. Very few dentists take medicaid. I assume the kids got some dental care and then he cooked the books to make even more money.

So honestly, if he didn't do this they probably would have had no dental care. At least the dentist didn't harm the kids by actually performing the unnecessary procedures to make money (some dentists would do this)

/he'll be getting his license pulled/going to jail if this is true
//no sympathies.

If one of them had been a contract killer who was insured for millions, you could probably use it as a pretty good ending for a mediocre movie.

Oh wait...

Wow... I just... Hrm. I know it's so incredibly unlikely that a scenario like this would come up, but I feel like the dentist should be slapped with something a little heavier than insurance fraud. Something like... inflicting unnecessary grief upon victims' relatives or something. At any rate, he's supposed to be a professional and has been certified by some kind of association, which means at the very least he should have his license removed if it hasn't already.

In NJ, the average sentence for insurance fraud is $10,000-15,000 and five years per count. Not that it brings them back but with five counts, he's only going to be doing dental work with a shiv to his neck for many years to come.

Lawls.

I remember doing that, which is why when I'm not sure if my kids are fibbing or not when I ask them if they've brushed I go check.

The eldest hasn't figured it out yet.

I give my son a breath test. Because he's 6 and he's an untrustworthy mofo when it comes to brushing his teeth. :P

/No drug testing though
