It's forty year old tech that wasn't ever going to get us to Mars or even to the Moon. Let it go.

CSB: A guy told me that his 6-year-old brother is a space fanatic. He follows every launch and spends hours looking at NASA's online images. At the dinner table one day, he told his parents he wanted to learn Chinese or Russian. They asked him why. He said he would have to move to Russia or China if he was going to be an astronaut.

Looks like Discovery's retirement processing must be complete. Tailcone's on for ferry flight and the simulated OMS and RCS are installed. Simulated main engines nozzles must be under the tailcone for display because the tailcone needs to be kept to retained to ferry Endeavour and the only other tailcone is on Enterprise and only fits Enterprise due to lack of drag chute modification.

That is NOT a cool story. Sad, yes, but not cool.

Yes all of us Americans should let manned space flights go, because we are never going back to the Moon or Mars. It will either be the Chinese or some corporate bastards who find something worth exploiting up there.

Our time is done, the Republitards squandered it.

Right. Because they were the ones who cancelled Constellation and replaced it with... nothing.

timujin: Sad indeed.

Not really. I mean it's not sad that here is a picture of two 1970's era space shuttles being prep'd for life in a museum. That was always going to happy sooner or later (assuming a shuttle made it from day 1 to that point in time intact).

What is sad however is that this is not a picture of a 1970's era space shuttle sat on the runway next to it's 21st Century replacement. That's very sad indeed.

Yes, that is what is sad to me as well. Sad that our space program is in a state that the last of our low orbit vehicles are being mothballed and not being replaced.

I'm glad my parents talked me out of being an astronaut because right now I would be unemployed instead of stackin dat paper.

Know a few guys that work(ed) at NASA. They were the nuts and bolts type guys. The average blue collar. Never went to college. Most got the jobs thru thier fathers or uncles. They bought houses on the beach. Installed pools. Drove really nice cars. Always bragged about how much money they made.

How's life at HVAC school with no job prospects working out for you now?

We still have astronauts, you know, and we're still hiring new ones. This year had the largest number of applicants since 1978.

Oh come on guys, you can't blame one admin/congress. Take Constellation, Obama did try to kill it. Only, Congress didn't exactly let him. So they compromised and thus Space Launch System was born. Which is basically the same big rocket from Constellation, with a more vague mission in mind. The same overall reason for SLS is there though, IE: Jobs program to keep the shuttle manufactures building. Lets build a big rocket without bidding the process to anyone or making sure its the best solution. Brilliant! >.
Oh, and at the current budget we might not be able to launch it very many times. 38 billion for two launches, great!

No boys and girls, as idiotic as the Republican's can be the Democrats haven't been much better.

Which is kind of amusing. Because I sit and watch people rant about evil Democrats and evil Republicans... but when I look at your country it turns our you've been arguing all night about what scent the lube they'll be using is. The end result of your election process, despite the millions/billions of dollars spent during it, is exactly the same no matter what. Someone's dong in your ass giving it to you rough.

This time the scents appear to be "Frothy Mentalist" or "Big Black Dude".

yeah It's Republicans who always push failed social programs while cutting science budget *cough*Lloyd*cough*Bentsen*cough

And even NDT (a zero supporter) shows you are a tool/fool
Who's More Pro-Science, Republicans or Democrats? - Neil deGrasse Tyson

But keep at it. As your fellow socialist said "If you repeat a lie often enough..."

"Slaves2Darkness" How apt a nickname. With ones head so far up their nether regions no wonder you're in the dark.

I watched until the part where he goes "and during that time {Bush's presidency}, the NIH budget tripled..."

The proper, inflation adjusted change during the Bush presidency was:

FY 2002 (first year Bush had an effect): $30M
FY 2010 (first year Obama had an effect): $37M

That's a 23% increase in spending power over 8 years, not 200% (which is "tripled"). And some of that was the result of just going along with the 1998 bill to double NIH's budget. Before ARRA, NIH's budget was dropping about 1% per year in Bush's second term. Tyson is not dumb, he knows all of this, that means he just enjoys lying.
