I like the sonic mention. Not terrifying per se, but it certainly conveys the near death.

For me, scariest video game sound was the random guys in Golden Eye 007 who would sneeze. I still remember with vivid horror playing that game by myself at 2 am, creeping through near empty levels when all of a sudden I hear a sneeze. I was certain someone was in my house.

4. The Headcrab Zombies - Half Life 2

Can't argue with this one. Made even creepier by the fact that if you play those sounds backwards, it's their screams of pain "OHH GOD HELP ME! HELP ME PLEASE!"

2012-03-09 02:22:07 PM
Doorbell noise from the Digital Integration's Tornado's RWR is missing, but surely too obscure

2012-03-09 02:22:24 PM
The only sound there I'm familiar with is the Minecraft Creepers. Those things have made me jump in my chair more than once.

2012-03-09 02:29:15 PM
The first sound that frightened me was the whir-click of the doors in Wolfenstein 3D.

2012-03-09 02:30:01 PM
Love the sonic reference. I can hear it now in my head. Good times.

2012-03-09 02:30:28 PM
"Your wizard is about to put on his robe and wizard hat."

2012-03-09 02:30:35 PM
The hull warning in Eve.

2012-03-09 02:32:21 PM
I used to panic at "SKATE OR DIE!!"

2012-03-09 02:32:26 PM
No "!" sound from Metal Gear Solid?

2012-03-09 02:34:55 PM

JusticeandIndependence: Love the sonic reference. I can hear it now in my head. Good times.

Might have to follow-up on this ringtone idea...

This list is badly missing the war trumpet sound from Civ IV.

2012-03-09 02:36:07 PM
Ohh and for extremely recent:

*ME3 SPOILERS*

The noise that the Asari husks make when they first appear is downright chilling. Their teleportation move just adds to it.

2012-03-09 02:37:29 PM
Why not the worm zombie things from System shock 2?
"Kill me!"
"Oh god they see you, run!"
As they attempt to brain you with a pipe.

2012-03-09 02:37:43 PM
Missing:

1) System Shock 2
2) Clive Barker's Undying

2012-03-09 02:37:49 PM
The babies in the school from silent hill 1?

RUN, COWARD!

2012-03-09 02:37:49 PM
Imps from Doom. You know, that faint scratching/crunching sound before they start screaming and throwing fireballs?

2012-03-09 02:37:56 PM
The only sound that ever frightened me was in Dungeon Master. On the scorpion level, you'd be sleeping and there would be a ROAR as a scorpion would sneak up on you and wake up your party. Mind you, the screen would be black when sleeping, and I was playing in a dark room.

I'm pretty sure I shiat my pants the first time that happened.

2012-03-09 02:38:18 PM
The Pfhor sound in Marathon. Half of the time you heard it, it was to the left or right of you in what you thought was an empty room - on top of being a basically scary sound in the first place.

2012-03-09 02:39:30 PM
The dragon roar in advanced dungeons and dragons on the intellivision.

2012-03-09 02:39:49 PM
Came for the silent hill radio static, leaving satisfied

2012-03-09 02:41:21 PM
This list fails for lack of the sound of the future refusing to change.

/or any other sound Lavos makes

The run of the mill head crab zombies didn't bother me so much. It was the venomous head crabs. Those shrieks in the dark scare the crap out of you because you know you're going to use a shiatload of ammo keeping yourself from dying.

growing up, I would always hate the noise when this guy would make an appearence:

Glad to see the water creature from Amnesia. All the splashing wasn't frightening, exactly, but it was engaging enough to make that part of the game stand out from the rest. The monster you can't see, and all that.

2012-03-09 02:47:04 PM
The Doom Cyberdemon roar. Especially in the later episodes where the cramped level layouts meant you would often hear it before you saw it so you knew it was there waiting for you, lurking around one of the next corners.

By the time you hear it, you know you're already farked.

The chittering sound of the spiders in System Shock 2.

2012-03-09 02:49:45 PM
Diablo I, playing with the lights off. When you're down in the dungeons and you hear doors opening and you know beasties are creeping up behind you.

2012-03-09 02:50:00 PM
The sound of my XBox reading a game CD. Errt, errt, errt. Tic tic tic. Errt, errt, errt.

/then the game freezes

2012-03-09 02:50:46 PM
The little rattling sound by the Wraiths in Dungeons of Daggorath for the TRS-80. Especially when your torch was getting low or you didn't have a solar torch, so you couldn't really see where they were.

/lawn. off.

Surprised that nothing from the old RE games or Amnesia made the list. I want to play Condemned: Criminal Origins now though. I hate mannequins/ porcelain dolls and that scene freaked me out a bit.

The sound of aggro.

Jormungandr: Why not the worm zombie things from System shock 2?
"Kill me!"
"Oh god they see you, run!"

Not as creepy as the Cyborg Midwives:

"Little Ones need lots of meat to grow big and strong"

Or the sound of a Rumbler.....

PanicMan: Can anyone post the list?

10. Condemned: Criminal Origins
9. The Pisaca - Dark Souls
8. The Redead - The Legend of Zelda series
7. "Running out of oxygen" music - Sonic the Hedgehog 2
6. Creepers - Minecraft
5. Lavender Town music - Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
4. The Headcrab Zombies - Half Life 2
3. The Kaernk - Amnesia: The Dark Descent
2. The Regenerator - Resident Evil 4
1. Radio static - Silent Hill series

2012-03-09 02:56:30 PM
The kshing-kshing Scissorman sound in Clock Tower was pretty good.

Demon babies in Doom 3 were good for a creep-out moment.

Space ship doors opening and closing (mostly opening) on parts of the map you can't see in X-COM: UFO Defense.

Everything in Fatal Frame.

2012-03-09 02:56:36 PM

JonnyBGoode: The chittering sound of the spiders in System Shock 2.

What about that nice, lone sim unit in the dark?

"So much sadness..."

2012-03-09 02:57:42 PM

StrangeQ: The Doom Cyberdemon roar. Especially in the later episodes where the cramped level layouts meant you would often hear it before you saw it so you knew it was there waiting for you, lurking around one of the next corners.

That one too.

I would have added "crow wings" from RE.

Their #1 was correct.

2012-03-09 03:00:15 PM
Half of those videos are 10+ minutes longish. Can't be bothered.

2012-03-09 03:02:50 PM
My (now 23 year old) son used to absolutely freak out and even start to cry when he heard the Sonic drowning music.

Came for Sinistar, disappointed it was not in the list.

/Agree with #1 pick tho

I hate that dog laughing at me after all the ducks have flown away.

2012-03-09 03:05:00 PM

paidhima: The kshing-kshing Scissorman sound in Clock Tower was pretty good.

Oh god, plus the music! I got that as a gift, and my friends and I played it as a group. That game scared the crap out of us!

2012-03-09 03:06:03 PM
The 'Friday the 13th' game for the Commodore 64 would let loose with a maximum-volume, blood-curdling shriek when you would enter a room that has a body in it.

The first time I heard it was a real lifespan-shortening treat.

2012-03-09 03:07:57 PM

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: The first sound that frightened me was the whir-click of the doors in Wolfenstein 3D.

The door not so much for me. Opening a door to be surprised by 'SCHUSTAFFEL!' or whatever it was...yes.
