i assumed that. AT&T seems hell-bent on shooting itself in the foot.

Can't get 4g rolled out before Verizon? Just rename your old network! There's no official standard, so no one can sue you!

I'm just surprised they didn't call it 5g.

We have Verizon 4G around here. Speeds are great. It just sucks the life out of the battery. I generally stay on the CDMA network just to help out the battery.

I thought the natural follow-up would be 4S.

Maybe they should just show a max speed in mbps?

THIS. I don't know why it angers me so much, but EVERYTHING currently claimed as 4G is bullshiat. LTE, WiMax, and HSPA+ are all far short of the theoretical 4g. Marketing run amok.

THIS THIS THIS!

There are no laws or regulations about what you can call 4G. You can call something that's 1G 4G. I can call my foot 4G if I want. Just don't hold it up to your mouth to talk into it. Trust me.

^These. I only ever put it into 4G mode when I am driving long distance when I can keep it charging. For short trips I don't need it, and am otherwise somewhere I can utilize a WiFi network.

I'm on Verizon and there's LTE in the area. LTE's theoretical max is 300mbps. Depending on where I am, I'll get between 6 and 25 mbps in town on my phone.

HSPA+'s theoretical max is something like 180mbps. I really don't know what all the factors are that determine how fast the speed really is. It very well could be that HSPA+ has a slower max speed, but a wider range. So, if they did roll out HSPA+ in my area, it could possibly be faster than the local LTE speeds. I really have no idea. So, I kinda have to side with AT&T on this. I'm happy I have a 4G phone, and if iPhones are going to have speeds similar to or even better than mine in this area, they might as well be 4G, too. We're never going to see those maximums in this generation of phones. It'll take a while to roll out new infrastructure with each generation of tech.

2012-03-09 05:37:39 PM
So AT&T recently stated that their unlimited data plan customers will get throttled speeds after exceeding 3GB on 3G and those on 4G get 5GB before throttling. So will I get 5GB at normal speed now on my iPhone since it clearly shows I am connected to the 4G network?

LTE's max today is only 75 mbps though, because you don't have any user equipment that does 4x4 spatial streams.

At&t's HSPA+ network I believe can do max of 21 mbps, with the iPhone chip maxed at 14.4 mbps HSDPA. The average speeds of both networks are going to be far lower than the theoretical maximum.

Apple is the the one who created the update....

2012-03-09 06:56:58 PM
The network technology AT&T is calling 4G is now labelled as such. How awful!

Functionally, even AT&T's offering is a whole lot faster than 3G, so it's not exactly the worst lie ever. They're rolling out LTE, of course, but the nice thing about their network is that it has HSPA+ just about everywhere - so if you're not on LTE, you fallback to that, which is still quite fast. Verizon's speed-gap is a lot larger.

But everyone who has said it is right, it's marketing bullshiat. LTE will probably deliver, eventually, as the spec evolves.

While I realize this site is rife with AT&T hate, and some of it is justified in the sense that they make mistakes like any other company does, it is not justified in this case.

AT&T has nothing to do with what is and isn't called 4G, so please, come off it. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) defines what is and isn't 4G. Last fall they decided that HSPA+ is 4G. As soon as that happened, AT&T and T-Mobile could advertise their HSPA+ networks as being 4G, because they are as of that ruling/decision.

So hating on them for something they did not do is rather immature, but it is very Fark.

2012-03-09 07:07:49 PM
I do agree with everyone's comments though that 4G is marketing BS anyway and always has been. It's a terrible system for naming network technologies and always has been, starting with 3G. They need to get off this "G" system and focus on the technologies, such as LTE or LTE-A.

2012-03-09 07:18:45 PM
Like another said. Just advert speeds and show speeds on the phone. Let the people decide if handling speed specs like windows pc min specs is acceptable to the user.

2012-03-09 07:20:20 PM
TFA says the speed will be the same, but has anyone actually tested this? (turn off wifi and run speedtest.net)... I haven't updated yet so I'll probably do this just for fun - one should never argue w/ the data!
cheers

The bolded is what every idiot in this thread needs to read. I hate coming into these things and people going on an on about how it's not "true 4G." ITU-T got pressured last year into calling HSDPA+ a 4G technology along with verizon's LTE.

Wireless threads are horrid on fark because 95% of the information is just complete utter trash and misinformation. They are about as bad as all of those FWD's people send all over the net and say they are legit.

The HSPA+ implementation in the iPhone 4S is 14.4mbps. The LTE implementation in all Verizon phones thus far is category 3, which supports 100mbps down and 50mbps up.

So while we can all agree that neither are following what "4G" is supposed to be according to the ITU, I think we can safely say that Verizon's LTE is close enough and iPhone's HSPA+ is nowhere close.

I actually don't buy new things until either the old one breaks, or the new one has a feature that cannot be resisted. My first smartphone was a Samsung POS. Clumsy interface, slow, crappy camera. After 2 years I bought an iPhone 4. Works great, does everything I need. I might get the next iPhone with 64GB storage. It would allow me to put my entire iTunes collection on one device. I am in no hurry though.

Why any of these android/apple fanbois would buy a new device in less than 2 years is beyond me. Even if I won the lottery, I still wouldn't buy a new phone in less than 2 years.

What qualifies as 4G isn't set by AT&T. If their network qualifies the mostly BS standards, they can say they are 4G. It only appears on the iPhone 4S.

good to know.

Can't wait until I actually see a speed like that on my phone :) Though, I've DEFINITELY seen a speed faster than 14.4Mbps on my phone.

I'd rather spend the money on the tower loaded with expensive-to-upgrade software. That device makes me money. Phones are annoying.

I am only mildly poor.

There's no official standard. But I'm pretty sure the consensus has already been made that HSPA+ is NOT what qualifies as a possible '4G' tech.

Yep. My speeds are the same at home. They are still slower on my 4S than what I've gotten in other cities on my 3GS. I'm getting 3G level speeds in some places but others in town I can barely manage Edge. As far as I'm concerned, Apple is not at fault. They don't run a cellular network, just phones on that network. If AT&T tells them they need to call it 4G, that's what they have to do. I wouldn't be suprised if 3G only started showing up on people's phones fairly recently where I live. To declare it is now 4G is dishonest.

Just checked: it is 5GB on LTE. The 4G on iPhones is not LTE.

How charming for the drooling Apple dweebs. First, you have to pay out the ass for your phone whose screen can break in a stiff wind, has poor comparative reception, no easy way to replace the battery, no removable storage, is loaded down with the worst DRM ever dreamed up, and even has a small screen compared to other phones.

Now, you discover it can't even handle LTE when cheap phones that are already discontinued due to age could handle it. Much like Steve Jobs' "visionary genius", it's just more marketing. You take a flaw and convince yourself and idiots that it's a feature.

Reminds me of the biblical literalists who use circular logic to justify their beliefs when reality clearly doesn't line up to it.
