I think it's going to be hard to top Jack and Jill for worst movie of the decade, but if there's someone who can do it, it's Eddie Murphy.

Obama loved it.

On the other hand, I'm interested to see how that Marion Barry biopic turns out. HBO + Spike Lee = promising.

What? You mean you have to do more to be funny than wear a fat suit and dress in drag?

That's a shocker...

Career killer?

That career went dead a long time ago. He needs to stick to animation films and just do voiceolver shiat.

The second I saw the commercial, I went in to the "derp a derp te tittly tum, rated pg-13" routine. Seems like it was justified.

I saw Metro.

It was so disposable that I can't remember anything about it.

Ya know with the whole Occupy movement thing, you'd think a remake of Trading Places would do really well right now....

Harlem Nights was his best movie. Your favorite movie of his sucks.

It was an ok/cheesey 80's cop action movie. Unfortunately, they released it in 1997.

Eddie Murphy's career has been dead for a decade. The last decent roles I can remember him in are Kit and his retarded double in Bowfinger, the talking donkey in Shrek, and a Motown singer in Dreamgirls.

Looking at IMDB in the last 10 years, his most successful movies were the ones where he played a donkey. Maybe he should stick with that. All donkey, all the time.

2010 Donkey's Caroling Christmas-tacular (short)
Donkey (voice)

2009 Imagine That

God, that's just abysmal. I wonder if he takes the time to read scripts, or if his agent just says "They're going to pay you $2 million to play a fat veterinarian with IBS." "SOLD!"

Longer than a decade really. He really started to fade in the 90's. True, he had a couple of big hits like 'Nutty Professor' and 'Dr. Dolittle' in that era, but he had some pretty big flops in that era with 'Metro', 'Holy Man', and "Vampire In Brooklyn'. As I recall, 'Beverly Hills Cop 3' was also a critical and financial disaster. Basically, he's a talented guy who was a megastar in the 80's and has enjoyed a long respite since - kind of like post-50's Elvis, he never did (or likely will) reclaim his former glory. To echo others here, he's better off sticking with voiceovers, or doing what Robin Williams did this century and returning to stand-up.

The Adventures of Pluto Nash (a $100 million film that grossed an anemic $7 million)

How could he possibly get more work after a $93 million loss!!??
It seems impossible to me that a movie could make that little (aside from unmarketed indie films)

I did see one commercial for this & I had a glimmer of 80's Eddie hope for it. It's dead.

I miss the old Eddie Murphy. Trading Places is one of my all time favorite movies. I was interested in Tower Heist, but from the sounds of it, it wasn't that good.

/Coming to America was awesome too

Murphy's career has been dying since he made his best film -- Coming to America. I agree with the person upthread who commented his best recent films have featured him literally being a jackass. As for his live action efforts, he forgot the whole part of a comedian should try to be funny.

Eddie Murphy hasn't made a funny movie in over 20 years. That's an entire generation. Eddie Murphy has not been funny for an entire generation.

BOO THIS MAN! BOOOOO!

I'm gonna say this, and I know that I'm going to take some flak for it, but you know what this is a preemptive "fark you" to the Naysayers.

I liked the Adventures of Pluto Nash. I don't think they had the right cast (Obviously they over payed, thinking they'd get a theater draw with A-list *cough* names) but that doesn't affect the story. It was banal pap in a sci-fi package, it may be the last 50s Sci-fi movie ever made. Think about it for a second. I know I will. I'm trying to remember that movie right now. Nope can't do it.

I'm cooling off on the whole Pluto Nash thing.

I'm over it now.

It was a science fiction comedy. That is a pretty narrow genre and the number of even remotely successful movies in it is very low. Ghostbusters 1&2 and Spaceballs are pretty much the only examples I can think of. The movie was goofy but enjoyable. But like pretty much every other sci-fi comedy it was difficult to market. Almost anything sci-fi other than straight up action adventure stuff flops hard. Thrillers, comedies, romances, dramas, all of it. It doesn't matter how enjoyable the movies are they can never seem to convince people to watch them if they don't have lots of ray guns and explosions. The exception to the rule being that animated stuff seems to do at least decently.

At least this "new" movie isn't just another copy of a basic plot that has been done hundreds of times before. Even if it is terrible you have to at least give him points for trying something different.

At least Eddie could be remembered for Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hrs, and Coming to America.

Better than not being remembered for an over-praised piece of crap like Jerry Maguire.

Tom Cruise? Risky Business was early '80s, and MI-4 did huge box office this past year. Or there was that Tom Hanks guy back then who was fairly successful, and hasn't been doing too poorly of late.

/Was going to say Harrison Ford, but he was '70s and hasn't been in a good movie since Air Force One

We need less Eddie Murphy and more Charlie Murphy.

F*ck your damn couch!

2012-03-09 09:31:43 AM
I think Murphy makes these movies because, even though they aren't popular here, they send them to the third world and they make a ton of dough. Norbit was made for 60 million and made 94 million in the US alone. While those aren't Brad Pitt numbers, they're still money makers.

2012-03-09 09:32:49 AM
He basically needs Tarantino to cast him to rejuvenate his career at this point. He's as low, if not lower, than Travolta was when he did Pulp Fiction.

And Pluto Nash really wasn't that bad. Not worth $100m, but also didn't deserve what happened to it. Plus, Vampire in Brooklyn was amusing. Haters.

And Charlotte Lewis was quite delicious.
