Do Canadians need a TV show to tell them what a possum is? (Not a rodent, no matter what CTV says.)

I thought that said "tornado" at first and wondered how gangs were terrorizing them.

We have an old, scarred up Brush Tailed possum living under our back step. It is almost completely blind and deaf, so I leave fruit and water out for it each night.

It's loves avocado and rockmelon.

Due to how scarred up it is, our usually tough cat just pretends not to see it. She will sit about 2 meters away, facing away from it: "Lalala - I can't see it, not my problem"

Possums are everywhere in the US. This was our pet during the wife's cancer treatments when we had to stay in downtown Bremerton at 11th and Wheaton Way. there were three that wandered by.

They're almost trainanle. This one showed up at 6pm, right after dinner and would wait to be served.

I don't mind the occasional possum around but I yell at this fat waddling raccoon that took up resident in the 'hood this winter.

"Hey you! Yeah, you raccoon! Get out of here!"

They'll have to battle the raccoons for food. There are raccoons in Toronto the size of Smart cars.

Had one wander up on the deck a few weeks ago while I was grilling. Gave it a pork chop:

Must have been deaf, because I took photo after photo of it and it always looked surprised when it turned around and saw me.

I went to put the garbage into the can in the garage one night, and somebody had left the lid part way open. The faint noises coming from inside the garbage can were a warning that was ignored. When I lifted the lid, what looked like the biggest rat in the world came flying out, like hell's own jack-in-the-box. I went one way, the garbage went a different way, and the possum went flying out the open garage door. It was the only time that I ever saw one of them.

And that was the best laugh I have had all day.
/Also I don't live in Toronto anymore but I would be pretty cool with a possum infestation. I had a bunch of giant racoons that lived behind my place there and I'm pretty sure a couple of them were gang-members or something. They were insufferable assholes.

And did the raccoon manage to not look bored with you for more than 2 seconds? I respect and admire raccoons but also hate them with a passion. And they are all over the place in my neighbourhood.

I had no idea possums ranged that far north.

I love possums.

Years ago, there were a couple of possums that occasionally came in through our pet door. They would trundle around the house having a look-see. Usually, I just let them hang out a while. If there was some reason I needed them to leave a little sooner than they wanted, I just took the broom and swept the floor at them. I never touched them. They were easy enough to sweep out of the house.

At this house, we see them in the backyard sometimes, but we have an extra heavy pet door because we are determined not to get roof rats again. We can stand to kill the rats. So, it's important we don't get them to begin with ... unless we bought the rat from a pet store.

Oh, I also love raccoons. My mother had a pet raccoon once. It was a source of hilarity.

I was in line for than Bubba Slide at Wet n' Wild and a huge possum ran across from bush to bush. Scared the hell out of the British vacationers behind us.

I love the little things. Very sweet.

Figured someone would do something like this.

They should try to get their raccoon population under control before worrying about possums.

Apparently in Toronto animal control won't do sh*t about families of psychotic, urbanized raccoons terrorizing your family but if you kill one you'll face charges.

Google did something wacky to me earlier but I'm not sure it was their fault.

Did GIS.

Clicked link.

Did not get standard "Full sized image link", only the page it was on.

Could not escape the page by clicking the back button no matter how many times I tried.

Closed tab.

Cleared cache.

Rebooted.

So how does an Australian animal end up in Toronto in such large numbers? People brought them here as pets and released them?

Possum are carriers of a single celled parasite, sarcocystis neurona, which causes EPM in horses. Having nursed a stallion through that a few years back, any possum that shows up around here has committed suicide.

spiro: So how does an Australian animal end up in Toronto in such large numbers? People brought them here as pets and released them?

It's not large numbers. CTV news is designed to scare and/or placate old people who don't even live in the city.

My parents had a possum that would show up on their deck almost every night. While the other cats cowered in fear and hissed, the not-so-smart cat would rub up against the glass and make "I love you!" meows at it. This confused the possum to no end.

I've been seeing roadkill possums everywhere lately. Damn, those things must have a self-destruct device inside.

Possums live everywhere around my place. We have whole families breeding in the bush across the road. They eat nearly everything, will destroy wire fences around the veggie patch and they love chilies. I don't like them.
