Both of them were wrong on the lyrics. Another opportunity for me to say see both sides are not perfect and could use fixing and another opportunity for some asshat to do the BSAB thing.

Man, that verse in "99 Problems" is fantastic. It's proof that Jay-Z can write some awesome shiat when he wants to, but he never wants to because it's easier to put out terrible songs with "Forever Young" or a song from Annie as the backing track and make money.

Hey, hard knock is pretty farking good. Even the guy who wrote the original song said so! But yes, his lyrics have slid WAY downhill over the past decade.

I actually still have Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life from when I bought it when I was in high school (!!!), and it did not age well at all IMHO. Actually, neither did most mainstream rap from that time period (for example, something like Da Real World is hard to listen to, and I love pre-Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera era Timbaland), so maybe that's not all on him, but "Hard Knock Life" is one of the prime examples of a song that could have been good if Jay-Z had spent a couple more drafts revising the lyrics.

I actually have not read it. I heard him talk about the book on Fresh Air, and honestly he didn't really address some of the things that I assume he talks about in the book in a way that made me want to read it. I guess I'll have to swing by the library and give it a shot, though.
