Seeing that city (#7) and knowing it is entirely abandoned is pretty creepy.

If there was ONE link on Fark that I didn't expect to see nipples in, it was this one. Color me surprised.

A good friend of mine remembers vividly when it happened, he and his family left Ukraine not long afterward.

Sad, sad deal. And scary when I was growing up, as my hometown is the location for the only nuclear power plant in my state.

I'd love to tour Prypyat someday. Gives me time to polish my Ukrainian skills.

/love me some Ukrainians

It kind of reminded me of when I was a teenager working in fast food. Sometimes you'd leave a burger patty on the grill too long, and it would get overcooked, so you'd move it off to the side, and it would just shrivel up and spatter in its own grease.

The Soviets were notoriously bad stewards of the environment. Their part of the arctic is littered with nuclear waste. At lest the West tried to treat it properly. Chernobyl was a very poorly designed nuclear reactor.

I find these pictures fascinating in a morbid sort of way, but I cant help but wonder how much of the abandoned area has been altered in the name of a better photograph, like that black-and-white photo lying next to a candle. Looks a bit staged to me, as does the pile of gas masks that everyone in that picture, the tard with the mask on his head included, is frothing over.

Wish people would leave historic sites well enough alone.

Wow! those shots of the people suffering, expecially that little boy who was abandoned by his parents, really make me sad. Out of sight out of mind really sucks when you come across images like that...

I have a friend who was near chernobyl when it occurred. he described the pills they had to take in order to prevent the thyroid from taking radiation. apparently, if you took one pill too many, you'd die.

he described going to many funerals of his high school friends who died from overdosing on the radiation medicine.

/ we were drinking out the time, so he laughed a little and said, life sucks, cheers.

I would love to tour the Exclusion Zone one day, but part of me thinks that the government shouldn't allow tourism. It feels disrespectful to the families that still suffer the effects of the disaster.

Yeah. We put our waste into barrels and retaining ponds and then let it sit for 50 years. USA! USA!

There is no way to treat radioactive waste properly. At best, you're passing it on to future generations. "Now that we got the energy, here, you can have the mess."

They did a similar thing on last nights news about the area in Japan around the power plant that blew up.
Very eerie..

I found it fascinating in a creepy way. Discovery or History Channel had a show called "Life After People" and there is no better example of 30 years AP than Pripiyat.

For anyone that has ever worked in nuc power touring the inside of the "sarcophagus" is a bucket list item. Having seen pics and talked to people that have been inside it is truly breathtaking.

Yeah...that's the big downside to nuke energy...obviously the threat of leaks, quakes, etc is always there, but the waste...where do you put it??? bury it in the middle of Montana and warn the 2 people it might contaminate? who knows...

2012-03-08 01:22:09 PM
I have to laugh (in the sad way) at the idea of limiting the exposure to a "safe" level. Cancer and radiation exposure is a statistical thing so while limiting the length of time is certainly a factor, every time the workers go in there they are increasing their chance of cancers. The workers that do this sort of stuff really are heroes (same in Japan), and sadly often face resistance to being taken care of afterwards ("prove that your cancer was caused by this before we cover your medical expenses" puts people in an untenable position). If I felt compelled to do that sort of work I would want a contract that said "if I get any sort of cancer for the rest of my life the care is covered" clause.

Thanks subby, those kind of pictures are fascinating in a morbid sort of way (as are the videos/movies taken immediately after the meltdown. YT has a lot of them). It makes you really realize just how fragile life can be (humans) & yet how strong it is as well (villages being reclaimed by the forest).

This is why nuclear power is a bad idea. When things go bad, they go very bad. And they stay that way for a very long time.

They better hurry up and finish the biological shield they're constructing. Not sure where the author got his info on demolishing the structure after the shield is in place. Last thing I read was once it's in place they're going to leave it alone - like a tomb.

Right now there are holes in the Sarcophagus that are big enough to drive a car through. Part of the problems trying to get it up as quick as possible.

If it falls in on itself before they finish the shield you'll have another release of radiation that will be as bad as the first time.

Serious question: why not load it all onto a large rocket (like, Saturn V-sized) and launch it towards the Sun? I'm not a rocket scientist, but the only downside I see to this is an accident on blastoff. Then we're really f*cked.

More people in the developed world died as a result of eating organic produce in 2011 than have died from the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Why aren't you looking to ban organic bean sprouts? My guess is that you just have a general fear of science.
