Any Congressperson who swore this oath:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

... after first pledging always to follow Grover Norquist's policies during their term of office, is a criminal.

HawgWild: What I'm trying to figure out (I'm using the word "trying" loosely, here) is how he got the clout to get all those goobers to sign the damn thing to begin with ...

Simple: The pledge enforced by the threat of Norquist's megawealthy backers funding opposing candidates if the signer should ever displease them.
Really.

I've emailed myself the article so I can reference it when I write still another letter to my two Republican congressmen.

A) No government official should take an oath or pledge that could possibly tie his hands at all in decision being made for office.

B) Every government official should take a pledge when taking office that he will not be bound to any pledge or oath that will interfere in his duties of carrying out his office.

Now if only there was a mechanism for getting these congress critters to agree to these terms in an open and public forum....

Grover Norquist: Hey, Congress, sign this pledge I got in my cereal; it'll make the economy go faster.
Leela: And what's your scientific basis for thinking that?
Grover Norquist: I'm twelve.

LouDobbsAwaaaay:

This is retarded. If your bus-driver makes a pledge to never use his brakes under any circumstances, you're going to berate him for not holding to his convictions when he realizes how retarded that pledge was as he's accelerating toward a cliff?

He's an idiot for making the pledge to begin with, but being upset because someone is going back on their word to destroy the country because it shows a lack of conviction is retarded even amongst the retarded. It's retarded2.

You are not a hero, in my eyes, for acting an a normal and sane person. Just because he caught up with reality doesn't even mean he's intelligent. It just means he is going the way the wind blows.

Had this guy used common sense in the first place and stood up to his fellow politicians and said, "This shiat is stupid?! WTF are you doing?". Then he may be called a hero. He hasn't stood up for shiat.

ps69: Grover's dad (i) named him Grover, and (ii) stole his food to teach him about taxes. That he grew up to be a crank and a maladjusted weirdo is not surprising. That he has tremendous sway over the operation of our government is a tragedy.

Our nation's fiscal policy is being dictated by a real-life Reggie Van Dough:

Grover Norquist is to Republican fiscal policy
AS
Fred Phelps is to Republican social policy

Both are inconvenient extremists who probably rate a silent "attaboy" from a noticeable minority of the Republican faithful.

I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with you. By calling him a dick for throwing away his principles despite that resulting in his support for what you called a normal and sane policy, you're suggesting that the only way somebody can truly be supportive of a policy is to support it since the dawn of time so as to not compromise their principles. That's ludicrous. The ability or inability to compromise IS a principle, and what you are and aren't willing to compromise on tells the world more about who you are than any ideals you could possibly hold. This congressman and others like him who are categorically rejecting Grover Norquist's pledge are indeed heroes because they are standing up for the one principle that the Constitution was based on more than any other: compromise.
